Keith Hughes You are very smart,, I am retired electrician/Lighting specialist,i have all types of bulbs ( lamps) sockets, switches, conduit,fittings etc,for fluorescent,incandescent,H.I.D,. I'm starting me a little wood shop, You have given me so many ideas of what to do with all this stuff, I have been trying to think of ways to incorporate it into my woodworking, thank you so much for opening my eyes. Thank you for sharing your brilliant mind. I would love to had you on my team all these years. I look forward to watching all your projects and learn how to do them all. I thought I was a mr fix it.BUT YOU ARE THE MAN..........
Best video yet. I like the fact that you could actually access the switch if you really needed to.
I really like the idea of this one, never seen a valve used as a switch before. I wondered how electrically safe it would be but it looks perfectly safe.
Thank you so much for not spending 30 minutes of useless explanations on the ways of the world, best video I watched in a long time
Thanks! This is one of the best videos I've seen so far on making this switch.
A lot of work going into something we take for granted. Very nice job.
Nice, like the detail that you painted it so the red brass does not stick out.
Killer project, man. You have inspired me to make one for my apartment. Thanks for posting. I am about to go check out your other videos!!.
This is fantastic, and your attention to detail is impressive!
Guys, thank you so much for all your comments and feedbacks. Working on Water Valve version 2.0 Stay tuned.

Can you post a link to where you bought the rotary switch?
Thank you going to be building our house in a month. We want to do this through out!
All tool're new,but not you.You're Pro.Nice Idea.
Nice build Roman!!
Schönes Video, freut mich, dass Du alles so toll zeigst. Wieder mal ein gutes Projekt zum nachmachen. Für Dich einen „Daumen hoch“
Imagine this hidden in your basement alongside real pipes,turn it and it opens a secret compartment,or even a narrow hidden room

looks like you have a good little helper there lol
Very cool looking. It would probably be good to do the electrical test before epoxying and painting the assembly into place, but I'm glad it worked out. :)
Super cool
Great work! Thanks for sharing.

I have a question, as you manage to stick the bottle to the pipe ? you have a video about that?
I'm interested in knowing how you fit what looks like a dielectric union to a bottle top?
Nice solutioN! thanks!
that´s a creative and good work .

Cool : ) I do something similar but I hook up dimmer switches to the valve - Nut epoxied to the dimmer cover, nut screws on to the bottom of the valve - slides right on and presto - Takes about 5 minutes : )

What kind of dimmers do you use?
WOW COOL!!
thank u 4 sharing
Awesome! I just didn't see what the pin was for that you put through the side. Any chance you could do a short video on that alone? Thanks again.
Cool!
great video! I dont like easy I like a quality finished project. Thanks for sharing, wish more how to vids were done this way!! Cheers

+Roman Biller great video, learned a lot. I've made a couple of test bottle/bulb assemblies and tested with incandescent tubular bulbs (waiting on small L.E.D's) because the problem is the heat from bulb gets bottle hot and it develops cracks at the neck where it's connects to the union!!! questions: connection too tight at bottle pipe? I've used steel and plastic washers. (I won't give away the Secret here🙄) Maybe venting bottle at this union? what bulb do u use? I know the LED will stop the heat problem, but they are expensive and hard to find. any help would be great as I'm in the middle of a build and don't want to wait until you post the bottle attachment vid😆😆...thanks again.
very kool
good job man. thanks for method..

Only thing Iron pies are good for anyway... :D I realy hate them in central heating or water systems so this is the perfect way to use them.
Hey, with the tester how you check if there are shorts and the switch works well?
Good job. I especially liked the 'pin' you placed through the switch to keep it in place. Very durable solution. Impossible without having a drill press btw, but that's another story ;)

+MrSjeupie I wouldn't say impossible, you could clamp the switch down in a vice like he had on his bench, and drill down into it with a dremel or regular drill! It wouldn't definitely be MUCH more challenging though!
@Hellsong89

+MrSjeupie What? Just couple days ago i drilled straight hole all free handing with cordless drill. It all depends on your stance, grip and i guess experience. The "pin" trough the switch is terrible idea, specially when it has treads in it and its connected to all metal frame of the lamp. Just think about what will happen when eventually treads will cut trough insulation of the wires ,cause whole assembly will move slightly every time nub is turned. I really hope this thing is grounded, or we will get another Darwins award soon...

@@Hellsong89 I totally agree. Drilling through the switch could inadvertently damage the wires and you wouldn't even know it, until the day you receive an electric shock. A better solution would be to screw on a bigger nut or a thick plastic ring on to the switch and then drill a small hole through the bolt or plastic ring body only.
Your drilling into the rotary switch then driving a screw through it, the potential for touching live components is high. I would use a wide nut on the the back thread of the switch, then drill and tap the nut.
Great job mate, thank you, but I was wondering what kind of valve are you using?
Love it, subscribed! Unrelated question but, what fitting did you use to mount your bottle to the T pipe? And is the bottle glued in or do you use an O-ring to hold it in place? Love your build!
What fitting was used to attach the bottle? Looks like a conduit compression fitting
Thx for sharing. Can you use J B weld on copper pipe instead of soldering them? I'd like to take up a project with my son to make him a lite . Thx.
Hey man, would you mind showing the rest of that lamp?
thanks !
I really like the functionality of the design but I wonder about serviceability of that rotary switch if it ever fails. With the valve body JB welded in place like this it's going to be a pain to get back out.
Howdy!! This is a great video/great idea. Saw some folks below asked what kind of valve this is and I have the same question. I went to both home depot & lowe's to try & find it, but no luck. I am pretty sure you've removed the mechanism from the fitting & we're looking at the mechanism. Can you give us a hint with regards to the type of valve & where you got it from? Thanks!!
Where do you get the switches and valves from? Thanks
I just bush a 1/2 or 3/4 down to 1/8th. Grind the switch knob down a bit and JB weld a red or black handle to the knob.
Great idea man! 2:55 Maybe drill press and drill b-e-f-o-r-e installing the wire, just to ensure no shorts are created and 7:05 test for continuity before welding the fitting to pipe? Other than that: A1!

He may have done it because it would be easier to hang on to?
I wonder how hard it would be to retrofit a dimmer switch for this...
👍👍
Just found your channel. Nice vid. Only thing is I don't think I'd have J-B welded the whole thing together like that. You put quite a bit of time into it, so what happens if the switch fails and it's permanently bonded? A couple drops of a weaker thread locking compound seems ideal.
Great idea! However, am I right in assuming this switch can only be used in a 12v circuit, not in a 220v circuit like we have in the Netherlands? If so I'll probably need a transformer? Tips are welcome and thanks for answering!
Bad ass!!
Hello really like the lamp. Did you ground out the lamp?
Cool project! You need to invest in a tap and die set.

very cool, I am making a lamp also, but I am not sure how to wire. Do show how to connect wiring?
what type of valve are you using? and where did you find it? great video by the way!
How did you wire it to the rest of the electrical cable?
Пожалуйста подскажите где такой выключатель заказать (((
Is that a muller straight water gate valve?
How do you change the washer after you JB weld it ?
Oh, so damn easy
Very cool video! Can you tell me where to get the rotary lamp switch? ;)
Alright. This is great. But how do you get the valve piece out of it's T-housing in the first place?

where doe you find those switches ?
wo gibts diese Drehschalter in Österreich oder Deutschland zu kaufen??
How do you find that kind of on/off switch?
Been looking for some sort of compression fitting to go from pipe to bottle, so that the bottle can still be taken of if bulb needs changed. What type of fitting are you using?

look for a dielectric union
Cool project. Definitely on my to-do list. But don't EVER use gloves with a grinder. I've seen a couple guys lose parts of their finger tips when the grinder sucks in the gloves tips. Bare hands only please. And please be sure to use eye protection while drilling. If that bit breaks you could get shrapnel in your eyes. Thanks!
That was excellent. I've just started searching for this...what a find. I want to use a residential water meter as part of a project I'm thinking about but want to make it so the meter dial works / spins when the light is on. Any ideas Roman? Great video. Thanks
@stevemethia5080

like this? I made the meter spin by mounting a small Chinese motor to it with a shaft and hiding the motor in the meter housing. I used a three way switch for one light, both lights, or meter. It was all part of a custom steam punk lamp. My Etsy page is Wood-N-Steel Design
Is that stem brass? You never use a grinding wheel on brass or aluminum.
Would you mind putting a list of parts in the description? What is that water valve piece called?
@thefoodgallery8344

Definitely NOT a gate valve. It has a compression washer and seat. Gate valves have a brass "gate" that lowers to stop access.

A really clever project. Still cannot figure out what you did near the beginning with the bench grinder. What was the objective there?
@ajschneck6
7 жыл бұрын
I think he used it to grind down the threads of the valve handle so that it can spin freely without screwing in and out.
This is a terrific switch idea! Thanks so much for sharing. I tried to find a valve like the one you're using but cannot seem to find it at Home Depot or Lowes. Can you tell me what type and size valve you used to fit so well in a 3/4" pipe? I hate being so close to finishing my project and running into this wall. Thanks.

Thanks for that but what type and size of valve (the brass part)?
what size of hole do you drill into the rotary lamp switch. also, why do you grind down the threads on the water valve and how far do you grind the threads.
@midnightblaze9579
7 жыл бұрын
Just to the bottom of the threads, anymore and the shaft will wobble.
Small helping hands
Roman Biller, did you wire the rotary switch directly to the light socket and branch the live wire off of the rotary switch wire? Or did you wire the live wire to the socket and branch the rotary switch wire off of the live wire?

Great work. I've never seen a switch like that. Can I ask where you got it? I've made lamps before and always had to put an inline switch on the mains cable.
