DIY Vevor Shower Pan Fail - Bad Tile Job
Ойын-сауық
Vevor tile shower pan installed by DIY goes horribly wrong. I see if a repair is possible.

Brutal! Gotta suck it up like the rest of us and watch 50+ hours of shower install videos before even buying the first product.
wow. My wife goes crazy with how much research and prep I do before tackling new projects. I can't wait to show her this. I'd offer props to the homeowner for trying, but this was pure negligence. Do your homework bro.
@Eric (homeowner), props for letting the Tilecoach dissect the DIY. Any of us who attempt things on our own - would probably have turned out the same way.

Yeah after watching some vids from this channel, I'm calling a pro for anything related to water or tile.
I have huge respect for you and Eric. He humbled up like a man and is going to be better for it. You did a solid and handled it like a pro. I really appreciate this video, I know how tough it is to talk to people when it's their work that is inadequate. I'm an electrician that lives in Placer county and I'm working on my master shower right now. Pray for me 😅
Props to Eric for attempting a shower build on his own. I did two in my own house but I spent countless hours at KZread university learning everything I could to make sure it was done right and most importantly didn’t leak. Tile Coach was instrumental in my self training. Eric appears to have great humility to let you guys film the evaluation process and discussion.

I hear ya, I'm doing my first currently 1/2 through the wall tiling now. Such a technical room. While things are done a bit different down under channels like this and others help so much. When bro asks me why taking so long and say I'm over thinking it I just shake my head. It's so much work and effort not to get it right.
You can't blame Vevor for the homeowner not pitching the pan or the pony wall properly, and for not using thin set. And why does it matter that you were able to pull the membrane off the foam? I can do the same with more expensive systems. I say this because some of my clients cannot afford the more expensive shower systems, and saving $600 is important to some people. I've installed many Vevor systems without any issues. Like everything else, follow the manufacturers directions.

I have scrap piece of Kerdi shower tray in my garage and I just went out there, grabbed a loose edge of the membrane and pulled it clean off the foam. One can definitely do the same to the membrane properly installed on drywall/durock.

What we need is more guys testing these cheaper end products (which I am currently doing in my shop as well) and share that knowledge in comparison to the big name products like schluter wedi laticrete etc.. im currently testing vevors uncoupling mat with laticrete 253 gold and stuck glass, porcelain, marble, ceramic, mosaics and the un popular use with ditra, penny rounds to see how it holds up. I can't even pull any of the pieces off the mat, its fking crazy! Using ditra I didn't have the same results which was surprising, don't think it is operator error either, its not hard doing mockups with 100% adhesion especially in your own shop lol.

Mastic! There's no hope. Too bad.
Tile coach, you went above & beyond in how you explained the mistakes to Eric without judgement or criticism and then to offer to get your suppliers to donate materials and then to coach Eric on how to do waterproof & tile correctly. I don't know a single tile contractor in my area who would go out of their way to do that. You set the bar high on how to lead the industry! My hat is off to you.

Thank you! Eric was a great sport too and ended up with a beautiful shower.
Sometimes we make money, sometimes we make friends. You’re Blessed Zac. We need more tradies like you in the industry… Stay blessed man🙌🏽🙏🏽💙
Props to the home owner for realizing he was WAY in over his head. It could have been a much larger disaster had he actually used that shower for any length of time. A for effort, F for implementation. I've done a lot of construction in my life, and it's best to let a professional deal with things that can cost me a significant amount of money in the future if I eff up. I've done a few showers, and they're good to go, but I'm a better plumber than a tiler. Water proofing and tiling a shower is an art. One that I have not mastered....yet. :) I'll keep watching Mr. Isaac in the meantime.
A tile guy with good bedside manner. Giving the customer the bad news in the nicest way possible. It's awesome of you to see about getting somethings donated by your suppliers. Been watching your videos and you are the type of contractor that makes me proud.
Let this be a lesson to any who attempt amatuer shower installations/bathroom renovations. You must binge watch evey tile coach video at least two times prior to commencing the project.

Great informational video, I just finished my shower and what should have taken me two months took me four lol and my wife was on me about getting it done. That’s the first time I ever did tile work and it turned out pretty amazing but I was very cautious on everything I did and get the proper slope. I did have a good buddy of mine come over and show me a couple things when I got stuck and he help me out. And, of course, watching all your videos helped out tremendously. I don’t think I ever would’ve attempted to tile a shower/total gut job without watching your videos.
You are such a nice guy., they way you walked home owner through the mess he made was so gentle and at the same time you pointed it all out. Good job! God bless!
Isaac, I'm looking forward to watching the follow up videos on this project and the eventual outcome!
Good try Eric, as a plumber I can say tile work is an art...
Dude in situations like this. It may not seem like it at the moment. But your a blessing. You saved buddy from ruining his home. And you told him he made a terrible mistake very nicely.
Homeowner looks like he’s been sent to the principal’s office.
Very kind of you to help this guy. Hopefully he will understand the value of a trained professional from here.

How many professionals has Tile Coach come behind? Bad work is bad work and if you don't know enough to do it yourself then you don't know enough to know when your getting lied to by a professional... I had to contradict a professional about a schluter install and my wife said "well, he's the professional..." but he was dead wrong! I had a Master Plumber who "in 30 years has NEVER had a callback" install a pan on a second floor shower... any idiot with a level could see it was never going to drain properly.
THANK YOU ERIC... honestly thank you.. I was just about to attempt a shower on my own in a can build and I am like NO WAY now.. just no way! Well done for taking receiving this really disappointing news (allowing the video to circulate so others could benefit from your mistakes before making them as well -again thank you so much for being so humble and open) and I hope you totally got hooked up and now have a wonderful shower that will not cause mould or leaks in the future thanks to the Tile Coach.. Thank you tile coach wow I'm only five video's in but I have already learnt so much.
This is exactly why I’ll be doing a coaching session, or three. If I lived in Nor Cal I’d hire tile coach to walk me through the entire process from start to finish.
It’s a great deal. Getting knowledge in person from great installer.
Each time I watch you your always so humble to people that made honest mistakes man . I wish you lived closer I would definitely take your tile couaching class . I love watching over KZread and such but i learn better hands on . Wish there was more people like you in the world it would definitely be a better place bro !!!
You handled that well, shower systems require a lot of knowledge so not the best diy project. Glad you could help him out.
I’m so glad you are helping him and guiding him so he can do it the correct way
I once had a bad dream that was me having to tear out a freshly installed shower that I built,It was an absolute nightmare, I was so relieved when my Alarm ⏰️ went off !!!!! 😅
Whoever did the shower in my house (before I bought it) left me with less of a mess than this. Thank you for the educational videos. I hope I can report good results soon.
Super informative...excellent examples and explanations! Thanks for sharing.
I know this is not your first one, and probably not the last one. But thank you so much for these videos , so we can point our customers on the right track where they can be educated about certain systems in this case the Vevo. You can see the home owner was proud of his work, but hope he appreciates the thousands that you saved him in damages related to the moisture and mildew. Because it is not only material if not health wise. Thank you coach.
That Barry Bonds t-shirt is legit!
It's amazing how many shower pan fails there are. Seen all fails in all houses I've owned.
that is a perfect example of doing the right thing, offering to help rebuild this enclosure and give pointers is a stand up thing to do.sometimes in business you have to do the right thing props to you.
Props to him for manning up. BRUTAL!
This was UNCOMFORTABLE to watch but very informative 😂
Very well handled! Feel sad for the homeowner as well since they put a lot of time and effort into it. Better to find it all out now than down the road when there are structural issues and possbile mold. There is always a silver lining. God Bless!
This wouldn't have happened to me. I'm the complete opposite of this gentleman - I know everything and don't do anything.

Lol you still need to learn how it feels to take multiple passes over the same area to then come to terms with how bad it turned out. We all gotta know that one thing
Kudos to the homeowner for the DIY, but definitely looks like DIY. He's a good sport.

No, he's an idiot that didn't take the time to even slightly educate himself before trying to install a shower.
I bought a similar clamp drain system from Amazon. Installing it in a few weeks. I know about the liner and how it should be installed but it’s always good to get a refresher.
The guy gave it try. The conversation was very uncomfortable to hear. As a viewer, I felt uncomfortable. But, there is a great learning opportunity there. Great work Coach and I hope the homeowner loves his future shower.
i wanna belive !!
Thank you for this video, I won't be buying a Vevor system. I'm learning how to tile set and will build my own shower. If I screw it up first time around I'll learn from the experience.👍
That was tuff to watch, but brutal honesty is needed sometimes!
Nice honest critique of the homeowners foul up. Hate to say this, but a little research would have saved that guy Eric from a lot of headaches. Glad He has someone to point him in the Right direction. More props to Eric as He recognized His bad and reached out to someone to help.

A lot of times people do things like this, then they sell the house and it becomes the buyers problems (ask me how I know). I have no sympathy for this guy because I know he's probably going to screw up something else on his house. The only good thing about this is he did such a bad job that he couldn't even fool himself into believing he did a good job.
This is how my first tile job looked like. Now after ten years I'm much better and everyone in my area want me to instal tiles for them. Just practice and every mistake is a lesson.
love the fail videos, great to learn from mistake
You should walk him through the process and record it. That would be cool.
Por eso uso kerdi, mas vale lo seguro que lo barato
As a DIY'er I've never understood trying to build my own shower pan. Its the most common failure point and when I did my shower I knew prefab would be the way to go so I could mitigate these problems in the future. This DIYer did an okay job with the tiling, but he shoulda known his limits.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen videos where it looks like it was done by pros and the walk-in shower still fails and it doesn’t take much to cause the failure.
You do a great job at crafting your feedback to be constructive
kudos to the homeowner who recognized its not going to work and called a pro
wow..just wow..
I like your flofx hat🤙
I'm buying one of those higher end prefab shower pans. These videos make it such a headache.
I love how he says he will see what can be repaired or saved. He knows god damn sure that is a total rip out and nothing getting saved.
Anyone from Sac remember Mike Stroble owner of Stroble tile in the 90’s and early 2000’s?
What are your thoughts on go board? Not for the floor, but for everything else
OUCH! Hard lesson. He’ll just appreciate it that much more once it’s done
My man winged it!
TileCoach you’re really onto something here by interviewing DYI’rs about how god awful a job they did. The suspense moment will be the price on rebuilding everything.
I’ve used the vevor system with success. I’ve installed it when the customers buy them. It’s not the best which is why I still put a liquid waterproofing over it.
You call this a Vevor shower pain fail, but this is a home owner idiot fail - the homeowner is the real issue here! What a scary thing to see!
Bro i feel like im watching a reality tv show with these homeowner fail showers
Pretty sure Vevor is exactly the same as Kerdi, just half the price because they're not hosting contractors for 3 day all expense paid training vacations. Basing your opinion of vevor products on THIS GUYS install is not logical lol. Great video as always.
professionals are not confused about what to do.
Mastic, grout & thinset pre-mixed would never be used by a PRO! The rain head is way too low.... Tough learning curve & $ for HO.... Tile coach to the rescue!
it was prob the mastic causing the waterpoof failure. Mastic sucks unless a kitchen splash.
The home owner missed every step along the way.
How do I get materials donated? I'm gutting out an entire 90s style bathroom with a jetted tub and big window.
Thanks for the amazing content! I'm in dry hot AZ., how long does deck mud have to dry before liquid membrane?
Look like owner like to put everything upside down, that hat backwards 😅
Yikes he said the drain didnt line up. Yea caz YOU aint cut the board right 😅
not waterproofing the drain is crazy.
What do you think about TileRedi?
moral of the story, don't buy knock-off shower systems if you've never built a shower before. The Schluter shower kit comes with everything you need including a beefy installation manual which makes it really DIY friendly.
@Faruk651

Schluter is not DIY friendly. Schluter has zero margin for error. Even a perfectly done schluter custom shower base fails in heavy use.

@@Faruk651 ive seen 5 star rated tile suppliers put penny tile on a schluter foam base. They even offer classes to teach about the schluter system despite breaking the rule of "NO tile under 2"x2" should be used on a foam pan". Absolutely bonkers

The Vevor comes in a kit too he just didn't use it I've used Vevor before no issues the guy just shredded it up
I used the Vevor with a liquid waterproof membrane!
It really looks like this guy did zero research for this shower. I'm getting close to installing a shower and I have been doing research on it for about a year now. I have done some floor tile install and it seems to be holding up great a year later, so I feel fairly competent at that, but all the other things like installing the drain and waterproofing still keep me up at night with everything that can go wrong. From the way everything from the tile to the drain was installed, and the products he used, this guy had to have been completely clueless on what he needed to do.
But the guy at home depot said to use mastic and that he had been doing that way his whole life.
@MAGAMAN
Жыл бұрын
People who work at homedepot are usually people that failed at the real trades. Never take their advice. Know what you need before you go in there and don't let them talk you into buying anything else. Home depot sells items that are illegal to use in your house. They won't pass a code inspection and they are even dangerous.
Caulk ring
So was the issue the vevor kit or homeowner error? The vevor looks the same as Schluter for half the cost
Dude….. I’ve got a lot of respect for this guy for letting this video go out to the world! Important for homeowners to realize tiling is difficult!! He learned a lot and will either do better next time or know how to vet a contractor if he goes that route.
How come you don’t video fixing the shower
Read your manuals guy ! All those manufacturers have manuals for everything and how to transition to and from different scenarios. Take your time getting the information right !
Ouch!
Pretty hacky
Did the home owner do any research before taking on such a big expensive project
Did he say whether he flood tested it b4 doing the tile? I would assume no
Before I tear into all diy work, I want to give respect to this homeowner for owning up to what he’s done and learned from it. I do gotta say, there’s an epidemic of diy guys who get emboldened by the internet to then fk up a whole house to the point it just needs demolished. This cycle is too wasteful. Too many times I go to a job like this, the home owner has 5k in tools collecting dust in the basement, and I gotta make his shit show look nice by demolishing thousands in new failed work. At least he came to terms with the situation and called real builders whereas others just eat shit and finish an awful project. There’s a disproportionate amount of houses hitting the market with a miserable 3-5 year expiration date before critical failures turn the whole home into a lemon 🍋 and we shouldn’t stand for it anymore. Consumers who buy New construction should ask for documentation/pictures of the process and real builders should already make an effort to actively document their work. Once this is commonplace, the owner can easily identify bad work. This will discourage amateurs to either quit early on or get real help. I learned the right way by redoing any bad work at my own expense. For some people that’s not an option like this guy. He took a shot, then called the best pro for it. But for people trying to do this for the first time and want to build a career, be prepared to take responsibility. Then be prepared to offer cheap work until your work is timely and clean. Once you feel this work is second nature, then you have the right to expect your work to increase a homes value. Until then, it really won’t.

What a bitter attitude.I see where you are coming from but think about it. However many houses you have been to because of problem, there are THOUSANDS more without any issues(a good portion owned and built by some solid hardworking people). Besides, hack tradesman of the 50-60's and Mother Nature have ruined far more houses than any DIY'er ever will. None of this is rocket science and perhaps it bothers you that weekend warriors are becoming more independent. Videos like this one are a shame but I built 2 walk-in showers and a sauna in my house with zero experience. Going on 10 years now without a single issue.
@HandyMumm

As an avid DIYer, who became a handywoman after 30 years of DIY AND renovating homes, I’ve had to fix more issues caused by contractors, doing a piss poor job than by any homeowner. It is so hard to find someone knowledgeable to do it for you even when you want to. Some contractors just sent over kids to do the job with little or no supervision. It’s gotten so hard to trust people and I’m a better Tiler and DryWaller than a few people in the trades I’ve run into. To be fair I had a boyfriend that was a contractor who taught me drywall and several other skills and one winter season when a contractor worked with me to repair my old California cottage so I could cut costs and learn. Just like It’s not all people in the trades are equal. Neither are DIYers. I am so happy that there is a KZread and I can watch many, many videos before trying a new skill. One thing I’d like to pass on to others I always include a few code failure videos when learning a new skill.

@@HandyMumm good on you. im speaking as a home owner who took ages finishing because I wanted to do it right, had to redo past contractor work, then took my time researching/executing tile, drywall, plumbing, glass, retention wall, etc. now i carry all those skills with me to my contract work. Contractors can be good for nothing and cheap or expensive and decent. All contractors in the industry should have the right amount of skill, but time is a factor. if they are paid by the job and not by the hour, for example, they would blast through a shower job and not do the waterproof membrane which is expected just to get it done so they can move on asap. What sets us apart as diyers is also time and enthusiasm. Ive seen too many home owners attempt to do a first time shower with a deadline to sell the property. Imagine how that ends up. If they have the time, they might not have the right attitude and end up sitting on a project so long, they end up hiring the cheapest contractors to offset the money they already spent on tools. Houses on a mass scale are suffering because of the wrong intentions and attitudes. people like you are few and far between. What is needed is the workforce to be replenished and retrained, otherwise the built environment will suffer. gone will be the 100 year house to be replaced by a 40 year house. we should be making 200 year houses, but thats hardly encouraged.
Brutal.
It is part 2 On this job pls?
This homeowners wife has gotta be pissed.
So is it safe to say the actual vevor system did not fail? Seems it was just installed incorrectly
That's what I hate about guys that want to save a few dollars and do it themselves they end up spending three times what it would have cost originally
Do you recommend anyone in Spokane, WA?
It crazy how so many people try to improvise a pan and drain. I ripped out a shower once that had roll roofing for the pan and walls. It lasted surprisingly long. Im curious if anyone has tried sheet membrane as a pan liner
I have a Vevor kit coming. Interesting stuff. The one I got has all the parts missing here coming with it. Less than half price of Kerdi, we will see. It does look like a Harbor Freight type of deal. I bought some weed cloth less than half price of alternatives, and it was acceptable, so that was my only reference.
@stevewatson2220
5 ай бұрын
I've used Vevor with no problems this guy didn't use all the parts that come with the kit
I've built things since I was a kid so maybe I have a bias but I'm always confused how this sort of thing even happens in modern times? People seem to just fill up their carts at the box store then drive home and start installing with zero research. And that kit comes with a bonding flange, he could have just bought schluters adapter for a 3 piece.
I feel bad for this homeowner, this will be an expensive lesson for him. It is hard to understand when someone with clearly limited DIY skills jumps into an expensive and complex project like a shower. A beautiful and functional shower is possible as a DIY project but I would call it an advanced DIY and only for people willing to take the time to learn how to do it correctly, read all instructions, follow all the instructions, and correctly use all the materials involved.

I feel bad for whoever he sells this house to. It's probably full of terrible DIY work that is going to cost the next homeowner tens of thousands.
I’ve wondered about the vevo products. Even had someone ask me about them since it was cheaper. I told them that cheaper isn’t better when it comes to tile prep. Atleast I have a reference video if anyone else ask about vevo products.
Outlet is way to close & definitely not to most city codes! That's what happens when a DIY HO thinks he can do it & save! This is the reason why Professional's charge what they do. Now look @ all the extra time, effort on HO & Pro, product waist/ new buy products, not being able to use MBS & last but not least the significant other not happy with waisted funds & not being able to use the shower!
