It is mid July, the hottest time of the year, and we have a cow we need to butcher.
What are we going to do?
One of the most important things to do when butchering an animal is to make sure the meat stays cold!
Farmers will often use fall or winter times to do butchering as the animal can be kept cold with the help of the weather.
But when you have no choice, and have to put an animal down in the heat of summer, what can you do?
We found ourselves trying to answer that question. The answer we found... was the CoolBot!
The CoolBot is a tiny little robot that turns any window ac unit into a commercial freezer, and by heavily insulating a room, you can turn any space into a walk in freezer!
We had an old root cellar on the property that wasn't being used for anything. We decided it was time to make ourselves a meat locker and butcher facility on farm.
Will the help of the CoolBot and a LG window air conditioner we were able to convert the root cellar into a meat locker and butcher shop.
The CoolBot's job is to trick your AC unit into super cooling a room down. Traditionally AC units have a thermostat that shuts off the AC at 60 degrees or higher.
To hang and age meat, a room need's to be under 40 degrees.
Until the Coolbot existed people needed to buy expensive commercial freezer units to get a room cold enough to hang meat. Now the CoolBot is allowing farmers, hunter, and homesteaders to build themselves a professional grade cold storage area for a fraction of the cost!

Your food your health is priceless.( 30 years of refrigeration service and repair talking here) someone tells me they got a cool bot, and need repairs..I won't touch it. However you are an awesome guy, very smart, and I enjoy your channel. Keep on keeping on my friend 👍👍👍

Being able to cool the root cellar just makes it an even better root cellar. So a good is coming out of this. Also, thank you for showing caring but responsible livestock management, not pet hoarding. Also I have to say the dark older pre repair space with flashing lights totally looks like a serial killer lair. Halloween party wouldve been epic there. Also Kay missed the perfect opportunity to jump scare you while filming.

NIce! If you put a damp/wet bar towel, flat, under your cutting board it won't slide. It's what we do in professional kitchens. Not sure if there are any sanitary concerns doing it in a butcher shop, but it definitely makes cutting easier when board stays still.

Maybe I missed something but if you install the Cool-Bot unit on the wall, and the a/c unit is in the door, won't the wire get yanked out when you open the door? There is not much height to the ceiling, you will probably have to break Ladybug into quarters before hanging.from the rails. Since she is very heavy you will need to be able to hang, bleed, skin, gut and quarter her at the location where you will do the deed. I've seen other homesteaders using the Cool-Bots with great success. My hopes and prayers that it is a smooth and gentle harvest. My heart goes out to your entire family for your loss.

Good share, make sure you dress in layers so you can go back and forth to work in the various temps, you want to make sure you don't get hypothermic. Think good hat and even ear muffd, easy to take on and off along with a good vest, and get help. We have worked long and hard in 4o degrees and you can get cold to the bone and get sick, certainly not a good idea. Also think of safe hot water you can sip that will be stable and not fall over. It's like hiking or hunting, plan it all out and it will be successful.

Many years ago, I worked at a food processing plant. I was the bookkeeper. Other duties required handling the retail end of the wholesale business. They serviced restaurants. While most bookkeepers wore nice business clothes. I would look more like a butcher with my white coat and men's sweater even in the hottest months in the South. I bet I was in and out of a walk-in many times a day. The freeze also had a walk-in cooler in front making the whole unit bigger than a house. Sorry about Ladybug. However my memories and walk down memory lane about froze me as I watched you. lol I

I know I saw this before but it was worth the rewatch because I forgot so many good tips. Love these videos, great job on the project. Tips for those in planning, if you can help it be underground but you climb upwards to keep the elements out, just better drainage otherwise provide for that in the design. Also if you use a window make sure its high quality well insulated and can take all of the elements, I know window-humm- dumb idea, but when you need to open it for various ventilation and cleaning reasons you will enjoy this window, one can design it to cover it inside and out with insulating covers for the other times, make sure there is an in and out of air to keep it clean and not let things build up in the air quality. Do check it for radon which is easily resolved with opening it up for a few minutes each day or just going in and out regularly depending on the level though. Consider a telephone line as many cell phones do not work inside depending on your location and what your cool room is made of. In case you get locked in or ill or hurt this comes in very handy, its not like one could just yell for help. I feel confident watching this video to consider doing something like t his, good to also locate it near the buildings if possible. Its like the family garden is best near the kitchen, something simple many don't think about, mine turned out that way as i am just lazy, just kidding having a disability and kids it just made good sense. Keep sharing Aus & K always love the info. Blessings.

This is an awesome project! I’m intrigued, because I was always told AC units would “freeze up”, or “the coils would freeze”, if it ran much colder than 60 degrees. I do know AC units need warmer air to work, to convert the Freon back to gas. Does it get cold where you’re at?

What is the additional monthly Electrical Cost to run an Air Conditioner 24 hours a day for the rest of the Summer and most of the Fall? Will you have freezing issues, in late winter that will require heating or does the root cellar always stay above freezing. Are you going to lay linoleum or other vinyl flooring to make it easier to keep clean? Are you going to attempt to have Lady Bug to walk down the stairs? I've read, Cows would have to be forced down stairs. However many cows don't have an issue walking up stairs.

  • @Homesteadyshow

So we will only use the walk in when we have meat to age, not all summer and fall. No freezing issues, a root cellar always is about 55 degrees. And we will not have ladybug walk down, her life will end peacefully in the field enjoying a bucket of feed

I thought I saw sunlight under the air conditioner. You should paint the walls and ceilings with some white waterproof paint. Make it prettier in there. The rust on the ceiling doesn't look great or sanitary. Your pigs can eat all the guts and pieces you don't want. If you don't want them to eat raw meat cook up a swill for them. Your sheep was still really small.

I got the room to 40 Fahrenheit, but CoolBots very clear on how much insulation you need to have for it to work. Concrete block, which my cellar Is made of, is a conductor, so it’s literally hearing the room while the CoolBot is working to cool it. With some insulation we will be under 40 and able to age meat safely.
