When i built my stand for my 55, I used 4x4 corner posts and put my 2x6 on the outside with a piece of plywood covering the top. With doing that, the 4x4 are inside the footprint of the tank supporting the weight. No need for the extra support pieces. At the time being 17, that's how i cut cost of materials but kept it plenty strong. Im 37 now and its as strong now as it was new.

From someone who works in construction and builds decks etc, I wouldn’t rely on brads and just the screws. Wouldn’t hurt to spend like $30 more and install some engineered steel brackets and timber loks or through lags. Would definitely add to the beefiness and would add another level of peace of mind that it won’t ever fail.

I see a lot of these videos and I am about to start my own ... people you need to use the 2x4 or 2x6's under the tops to the floor do not let screws hold the weight! They look nice! well done :P

I've built several stands over the passed 55 years. The only difference is that I glued all my joint & flat surfaces along with screws & the odd dowel spots. I also liked when Kreg came out with there pocket hole system, I wound up getting the complete system, I couldn't help not buying it all. John

Looking good so far! True, the weight distribution is important with this type of stand. Even with quality connecting material legs should go below the tank. Originally I wanted to do something similar, 40gallon secondary below 190gallon main. But instead of wood I decided to go with steel (with wooden cover)... which wasn't without issues. The locksmith (who welded it) recommended 30x30 mm steel beams of 3mm thickness (2 mm is more common, 1 inch is 25.4 mm) and that even with taking out central beam out of all 10 standing beams (legs) should be more than enough, one of the LFS owners convinced me otherwise... even if just for the rest of my mind. They had one stand (of different design) twist. My flat has cheap floating floor on it (on top of concrete) and floating floors tend to deform easily. Steel is also less rigid than wood of the same strength.

Hello John, looks good, good idea for more space. I know you can't have vertical centered support, but could you atleast put one in the back. I just feel little more at ease with something supporting the middle, specially on a 6 foot tank. Love your show, good job you two.

You've built stands, but how would you go about reinforcing a floor/subfloor to withstand the weight of a larger tank? I have a 180 gallon glass tank that Im set up in my basement. I wanted to have it on the first floor but I'm not sure the floor can hold it. I can access the floor thru the drop ceiling in my finished basement.

When working with dimensional lumber, how do you deal with the general unevenness of it? For example, I never see anyone running their horizontal supports through a jointer, or do anything to address that. The last few stands I've built when I set the tank on there, I can see many high and low points where the rim of the tank isn't making consistent contact with the wood. Is that something to just not worry about?

If I scaled this set up to hold a 4ft 180gl tank on top would I be safe with 2x6 with no middle brace? Then if I need something on the bottom to tie it together to make it not wobble I have a 75gl I would put down there on the 2x4 at ground level. Am I safe to make it like 5ft so there is room for the 75gl but that puts the 180 in the middle part not directly down on the corners.
