    Yeah, I probably could have gone into a little more detail in this video, but I was trying not to let it run on too long. Maybe next project I'll dive a little deeper. I'm actually working on something right now that will be a much deeper dive into my selection process. Make sure to check back for updates. May or may not be a podcast. Thanks for watching!

    I'm really enjoying the series so far. I've done some woodworking, but never messed with electronics of any sort. I plan to build your 2.1 soundbar system or a bluetooth speaker once I've got the budget for it. All the information you're sharing should make the process a bit less daunting. Thank you!

    Not an audiophile or avid speaker builder...found your channel a while ago and just liked the vibe and presentation of information. Some quick screen shots of the ones you picked and why would be great. Especially when it came down to the final 10 drivers. I'm excited for the next video. I started an old record cabinet rebuild a long time ago, and by start i mean i bought a bunch of stuff that's in a closet, a Yamaha amp R-S300, basic record plsyer for now, better as budget allows. And for speakers i was having a hard time finding 8" or 10" woofer 2 way plans. A lot were smaller and they may have worked, but I wanted to fill up the space where the original speakers are. Found a place called Pi speakers and ordered up the OnePi diy kit...hope to finally build it this summer or so.

    Thanks so much for watching! After reading the feedback I've received, like yours, I'm going to make a step 2.5 video and go a little deeper into the details of how I narrow my driver options on the actual website. That should be out next week. That sounds like an awesome project! I also have a large old record player cabinet that I've wanted to restore for a while now. Maybe someday!

    Hi Kirby, First I want to tell you that I love your videos I learn from them a lot!! I want to build my own 3-way tower speakers (my first set) and I easily get lost with the drivers specs, so I wanted to ask if you could make a video of how to read the drivers datasheet and what to look for in them.

    Thank you Kirby for another good video! I think many subscribers agree with me, it is time to build something big and powerful, for example 5.1 or 7.2 set of speakers with big speaker drivers(bigger then 6" in each) and with two subwoofers with 10" or more speaker drivers. It could be a really good challenge for you and a lot of interesting videos for us :)

    Hello Kirby Love all the Vids your doing, really like how you break everything down for the D.I.Yer, but i have a question? How do you pick speakers for a clean crisp sound? is it the speakers or is does it really depend on your crossovers and what material you use? I've watched all your Vids on the subject but i'm not sure if i missed that part. Thanks for all the Info you post.

  • @WeBuild4Life

    You definitely need to mention the breakup of a woofer. Not only does the frequency + size + sens constraints make it difficult to choose a speaker pair, the break up of the woofer can also hugely limit what makes sense to use if you're going for Hi-Fidelity. Depends on the order of crossover you're going, but you definitely want to cross at least an octave below the breakup. (It might have been two? I believe for my speakers i built recently I did a 12db/octave crossover and crossed 2 octaves below the breakup) (but maybe this is too advanced for an every day speaker)

  • @KirbyMeetsAudio

    @KirbyMeetsAudio

    I agree, but using that as part of the selection process in this build is a little advanced. We aren't building a critical listening kit here (as we discussed in the first video), but I will go over the subject when we get to crossover design as it is relevant to all good speaker design. The whole point of this series is accessibility to people interested in designing their first speaker, can't hit them with everything at once! I'll be doing more of these series with other projects, like critical listening speakers, to show the differences in the application of the process. Thanks for watching!

    WeBuild4Life , I understand totally, you have to give enough leeway for the entire system to respond to music, speaker design, shape, size, efficiency, roll off frequency, cross over points, the list goes on and on. I'm just learning but I catch on quickly. I'm experimenting with L-Pads also with certain tweeters and full range driver's and combining with different drivers and such. in the end you may discover a very good combination of drivers, cross overs, cabnets, ports, sealed, T-Line, band pass, ect. the possibilities are endless and when you get it right, oh boy it works. like a light bulb literally being turned on 😁!!!!!!!

    I have a question. I love the Grand Orgue sound (my friend built one) and I'd like to build something like this. I'm a woodworker and pretty good with electronics. I volunteer at a second hand charity shop testing electrical items and have access to second hand speakers many of which I have to throw away due to cosmetic damage. I was wondering if I could collect drivers from these rejected speakers and build a large say 6 driver cabinets. Select the drivers according to size say all 4 and 6 inch and a tweeter. Is this doable or do I need info about each speaker to be able to combine them. I am interested in this project as its ambitious, a challenge for me. I like the idea in the Grand Orgue of many drivers all doing a little bit and thus more responsive. Thanks for any help here.

    only bad things about spec selecting is you have to trust the manufacture to be honest about how good there speakers are and numbers dont tell everything but i agree its a good start if your starting i replaced a daton with a morel with almost the same specs and wow it made all the difference, but it was a huge difference in budget also. rely like your vids im thinking of starting up a Chanel. i have to admit watching your videos along with a few choice others have inspired me to venture in to this area.

    Go for it, man! I agree, but from my testing, they aren't far off. If you're concerned about listed specs, you can always use a system like DATS to get your own parameters. Thanks for watching!

    Let me add: use the parallel woofers gives +3db by doubling the size of cones and additional +3 for doubling the power delivered by amp. So in MTM you have +6db at woofers, most tweeters may have problem to match, so much better is 2,5. Additionally 2,5 allows correct the +6db baffle step in easy way...

    I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but Parts Express seems hard to navigate if you type in 3 inch or 4 inch speakers there's not that many to choose from so where are you getting all these speakers to choose from.. also would be cool if you could figure out the cheapest possible speaker with an amp inside that sounds good because if you just go with Dayton audio it seems the stuff gets pretty expensive.. I wish I could do what you do for a living. Speakers and audio is my passion but it's just the thing on the side.. thanks for everything you do

    Just wondering why you always seem to use Dayton drivers. There are so many options on PE that are similarly prices and highly reviewed. Have you tried out the other companies? If so how do you feel they compare to Dayton? Also have you every built speakers with higher priced drivers like Scan Speak, if so I'd love to know your opinion between those and Dayton. I am new to building them, though I love music and have way to many speakers. I really just want to know if it is worth the extreme cost difference for the drivers like Scan Speak vs Dayton or Tang Band.

    Do you have a list of speakers that would be great for repurpose (DIY speaker builds) if we can find them used... like TV speakers, portable radios etc.? Isn't there a fantastic passive rad speaker in Toshiba big screens that'd be a good candidate for a project?

  • @KirbyMeetsAudio

    @KirbyMeetsAudio

    That's not really how it works. Speaker systems are designed around a host of variables, all of which require knowing the TS parameters of the driver. You would need a system like DATS v2 to get those specifications. OR you can just wing it using trial and error with the drivers you have salvaged. Which is fine! You'll probably learn a lot. Just remember that the people that designed the speakers in the first place went through all the steps I'm talking about in this series. So build off their work and start with an enclosure around the same size as the original. Thanks for watching!

    I don't subscribe to many channels but I thought yours was worthy! ;-) Have you ever built a speaker using a Raspberry Pi (or similar SBC) with an i2s DAC HAT running something like Rune Audio, Volumio, Moode, etc (basically MPD server daemon)? If you used something the Piano DAC it has a programmable DSP which you can use for crossovers or subwoofer output.
