This looks like THE inexpensive solution! Guessing you can make it look as high-end as you like, my only question now is what type of fabric did you choose (and now that you are two yrs in, has it been durable)? One addtl comment: I love the idea of it rolling up behind the porch trim/soffit (my choice will be to adjust it up a little higher) at the top...winds and weather in the midwest make this an absolute must! KUDOS, bless you, and thank you for sharing!

Hi! Great idea thanks for the guide! I have a question about the ropes... why did you have to use 3 separate ones? Could you just use one continuous one to loop under the pvc and back up, or would it not roll up properly?

  • @diycheapneasy6460

Thank you! I don't think that would work being that the rope would have to be able to go up both sides and the screen is secured on the back side. If you can figure something out great!... Hi! Wonderful DIY project and video 😁.I have a few questions for you, what size eye bolt did you use? What kind/size of rope did you use? How did you hem the edges, did you just use plain needle and thread or you used a lacing needle and thicker thread? Thank you!

Hi and thanks! Sorry for the late response but I had thrown away all the packaging from the products that I used so I had to go to Home Depot to get the info and I was barely able to get over there. The eye bolts were 5/16 x 4" The rope was All purpose clothesline rope 3/16 x 100ft. As far as the thread, I used the thickest thread my wife had in her swing box... lol! She had some upholstery thread from years ago that worked out great. I used a medium sized needle not too big and that worked fine. Sorry but I don't know what size it is. I hope this helps and good luck on your project. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask... blessings!

I believe there are different thicknesses of shade materials... you'll just have to find one that's good for you. My patio is open on the ends so air still circulates thru but there is some restriction of air with this material. Maybe install an outdoor ceiling fan? That's something that we're going to do.
