DIY pour and finish a CONCRETE SLAB with Rapid Set Concrete Mix

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I will show you how to DIY pour and finish a simple concrete slab with Rapid Set Concrete Mix. This may only be a small 2'x5' slab but the possibilities are HUGE! In optimal weather conditions you can drive on Rapid Set Concrete Mix in only ONE HOUR! Since it was only 35 Degrees I waited until the next day but that's still a BIG DEAL. I hope you learn and enjoy!

When you're working with a small area, and you're working alone, like you did in this video, mix all of your rapid set concrete at one time. This can be done in several buckets, one for each bag, or you can rent a small mixer. If you don't want to spend money on 5 gallon buckets, or a mixer, ask your local bakery if they have any that they are going to be throwing away, most bakeries will give you the buckets for free. This will prevent your rapid set concrete from hardening while you mix the next bucket. If you have any leftover concrete mix, dump it into a heavy duty plastic yard waste bag, and as it hardens, shape the concrete into somewhat of a rock shape. When the concrete dries, peel the plastic away for an accent piece in your yard or garden.

That brought back so many memories of helping my dad do cement work. He poured2 large double wide driveways. Living out in the county we had acres for our 2 properties. He was a perfectionist with his work.

I wish I had a place closer to me that sold Rapidset. Two years ago I used the mortar mix to make countertops for a custom kitchen. I ran out of it in the middle of the project and had to drive for two hours to get more. This company makes an incredible product. I also built a set of bedroom furniture and I made concrete tops for the dresser and end tables. My wife loves it.

I did something like this at my old place for my garbage cans. My land lord loved me ! Even though I ws renting I needed to do projects just to keep my sanity and level of self worth . I did not expect the truck driving over the rapid set like that. Rapid set is the SHIZ!!

I think you did an overall top job explaining how to finish concrete. 1) no need for a trowel if you are broom finishing, 2) always joint your concrete first before brooming and then do a final pass like you did with the edger, 3) GREAT explanation of the difference on contraction vs expansion joints.

You said that you're not a professional, and if you're watching this video, neither are you. I've been a carpenter and concrete finisher for 32 years, so at least 1 professional watches your videos. From what I've seen, you take pride in your work, you have a good attitude, and you're a better finisher than a lot of the so-called journeyman that the union hall sends out. I'd say that makes you a professional. You just need to learn the terminology, for example, I don't know why, but we say rodding instead of screeding, so we call it a rod, or rod board instead of a screed or screed board. That industrial trowel is called a Fresno. The magnesium float is called a mag. Finishing is implied, so finishing trowels are just called trowels unless they have round corners, and those are calld pool trowels. That edger is called a shiner or a border edger. The tool you cut the joint with is called a jointer or a groover.

Looks great for such a fast curing concrete! But in real life situation I think most people with a budget would buy regular concrete mix bags for this project since the cost (at least in Canada) is over 5X more for rapidset. Would be a$150 CAD project instead of $30. I understand that it is a sponsor and you do great projects with them. Keep the great works and projects!

For 3rd slab not bad. Push your luck with quickset and that many bags 😉. I noticed you didn’t tap the sides or oil the frame which can be a @#& with Portland based when removing. Remember, strength of concrete is dependent on water to concrete ratio. You had a “soupy mix” which is fine for what your doing. If less water was used, you may be fighting time. Good job for 3rd slab and yes it’ll work great for its purpose and ya didn’t have to bring in a handyman or small contractor to do the work 👍

I absolutely loved this video! Thank you! Did you start working the edging immediately or did you have to wait a little bit. What are the signs you are looking for to start working the edging? 🤔

Work it immediately. You don’t have time to wait with this stuff haha

Can u use this over my existing concrete? Like damaged areas , especially just doing a top layer. To make it look new again.
