DIY pour and finish a CONCRETE SLAB with Rapid Set Concrete Mix
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I will show you how to DIY pour and finish a simple concrete slab with Rapid Set Concrete Mix. This may only be a small 2'x5' slab but the possibilities are HUGE! In optimal weather conditions you can drive on Rapid Set Concrete Mix in only ONE HOUR! Since it was only 35 Degrees I waited until the next day but that's still a BIG DEAL. I hope you learn and enjoy!

When you're working with a small area, and you're working alone, like you did in this video, mix all of your rapid set concrete at one time. This can be done in several buckets, one for each bag, or you can rent a small mixer. If you don't want to spend money on 5 gallon buckets, or a mixer, ask your local bakery if they have any that they are going to be throwing away, most bakeries will give you the buckets for free. This will prevent your rapid set concrete from hardening while you mix the next bucket. If you have any leftover concrete mix, dump it into a heavy duty plastic yard waste bag, and as it hardens, shape the concrete into somewhat of a rock shape. When the concrete dries, peel the plastic away for an accent piece in your yard or garden.

That’s what I’m talkin about! 👍🏻🎉
That brought back so many memories of helping my dad do cement work. He poured2 large double wide driveways. Living out in the county we had acres for our 2 properties. He was a perfectionist with his work.
I wish I had a place closer to me that sold Rapidset. Two years ago I used the mortar mix to make countertops for a custom kitchen. I ran out of it in the middle of the project and had to drive for two hours to get more. This company makes an incredible product. I also built a set of bedroom furniture and I made concrete tops for the dresser and end tables. My wife loves it.
I did something like this at my old place for my garbage cans. My land lord loved me ! Even though I ws renting I needed to do projects just to keep my sanity and level of self worth . I did not expect the truck driving over the rapid set like that. Rapid set is the SHIZ!!
Looks great, I'm a recent first time home owner and this video is perfect for what I'm gonna do for a small resin storage shed install. All my questions answered with this video... Thanks Michael.
First video of many I’ve seen that really explains how to make a concrete slab. It even gave me the confidence to make a concrete slab I need for my dog’s kennel.
This is what I've been needing, thank you so much for showing me how to make a form and how to level it, and everything else. I think this is the best video ever, just easy step by step. Thanks again!

I loved the tool review, one by one, very very guiding and assisting. Correct good tools are 50% done in my mind.
Awesome and timely. I was just wondering about pouring a 10x8 slab but its winter......so thanks for showing it can be done.
Hey Michael, that was a great video. I really appreciated that. I enjoy just seeing how you edged the slab as I didn't know there was a special tool for that. I didn't know how that was done so that was very informative. But then again, all your videos are informative. Thanks very much and happy Thanksgiving.

I looked all over the KZread for someone using clean fill for this project!! Thank you bro!
I think you did an overall top job explaining how to finish concrete. 1) no need for a trowel if you are broom finishing, 2) always joint your concrete first before brooming and then do a final pass like you did with the edger, 3) GREAT explanation of the difference on contraction vs expansion joints.

I`ve used this mix quite a few times ,It`s costs a bit more than regular cement mix but it preforms very well in the long run and finishes very good the only con I ever had was that it`s has a brownish color instead of gray.

Interesting. I had to tell my wife about that. Never seen anyone do that in cold weather and snowing. 🙂
You are great at describing what you are doing! I also enjoy listening to you when informing us on how to do it. I have watched thousands of videos on various topics. How come video authors hardly respond to questions asked? I know you are busy, but if you are going to post a video, please reply to the questions asked by your viewers so we can become more educated about what you are doing and produts used. I love your videos and your presentations, just want to see more feedback from you on questions. Thanks for sharing!!! 😊😊😊😊
This is quite a coincidence, I am currently upgrading the pads for my hives. I'm near AA so can relate to the current weather hiccups
We use this concreate mix to reset manholes, works great if you can't keep an area closed or have to pave asphalt within the hour or so.
Thank you for understanding that this woman is a beginner and I need you to explain it well…which you did! And you looked like you were having fun!

For a job like this I use 2 inches of gravel and two inches of cement using 123 mix on the cement. I do drive my pick up on it also. All my non structural cement is laid like this and iam on 34 years of using this technique with no excessive cracking. Saves on cement on large jobs

Thats probably because you used a sand compactor first or your soil is already dense/hard as a rock. Driving over 2 on 2 Wouldn't work in SW Florida unless you pound the crap out if the sand with a gas compactor.
But Mike, great job 😁
You said that you're not a professional, and if you're watching this video, neither are you. I've been a carpenter and concrete finisher for 32 years, so at least 1 professional watches your videos. From what I've seen, you take pride in your work, you have a good attitude, and you're a better finisher than a lot of the so-called journeyman that the union hall sends out. I'd say that makes you a professional. You just need to learn the terminology, for example, I don't know why, but we say rodding instead of screeding, so we call it a rod, or rod board instead of a screed or screed board. That industrial trowel is called a Fresno. The magnesium float is called a mag. Finishing is implied, so finishing trowels are just called trowels unless they have round corners, and those are calld pool trowels. That edger is called a shiner or a border edger. The tool you cut the joint with is called a jointer or a groover.
ayyyy oooo nice job Michael!

One question, Mike? 😂 😂 😂
You are so entertaining. I'm no expert on anything like do it yourself... I watch KZread videos on using cement for garden vases and sculptures..but they never tell you what kind of cement to use... mortar or whatever...so I'm lost .however I like your lesson plans and again you are informative and entertaining. Thank you.

Cement is just Portland, mortar is Portland cement and sand, concrete is mortar with aggregate (stones) of varying size depending on the thickness of your concrete. Use mortar for all decorative USES. (Grout is just mortar with a flow control type of liquifier aka water reducer).

If you are watching this video then well neither you are... ha ha ha ha, you are absolutely right, thanks for sharing, it is exactly what I needed.
Michael, can you do a curving garden border video?
Rapidset is an awesome product. Just need to understand how FAST everything will set up. I use Rapidset Mortar for doing stucco work on concrete block foundations as well as ICF.
Looks great for such a fast curing concrete! But in real life situation I think most people with a budget would buy regular concrete mix bags for this project since the cost (at least in Canada) is over 5X more for rapidset. Would be a$150 CAD project instead of $30. I understand that it is a sponsor and you do great projects with them. Keep the great works and projects!

Great point, and you don't need to be a Cannuk to realize the "kicker" while standing at Home Depot and looking at the price tags, ahahah
For 3rd slab not bad. Push your luck with quickset and that many bags 😉. I noticed you didn’t tap the sides or oil the frame which can be a @#& with Portland based when removing. Remember, strength of concrete is dependent on water to concrete ratio. You had a “soupy mix” which is fine for what your doing. If less water was used, you may be fighting time. Good job for 3rd slab and yes it’ll work great for its purpose and ya didn’t have to bring in a handyman or small contractor to do the work 👍
Hey mike. Hope all is well. What’s the best concrete brand or type of concrete to use to expand (widen) a drive way? Thanks
Rapid set is awesome for small projects. I wouldn't use this for huge jobs unless you have help!

Can u use this over my existing concrete? Like damaged areas , especially just doing a top layer. To make it look new again.
