DIY Overlanding Portable Power Station Overview **How did it do on its first 3 day trip??**
Комедия
I built a solar generator/battery box and just got back from a 3 day overlanding trip in Northern Tennessee. This is a detailed overview of the box and its components. Let me know if you’d like more info on the build! @RenogySolar @setpowerusa

We have used the kzread.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
It would be helpful if you listed the parts and where to get them along with a schematic.

Very professional build. Have fun stay safe.
I built something very similar, using the exact same Husky toolbox, but I out the battery in the bottom and all of the output stuff in the middle box. Very cool stuff!
Great build! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for adding the link for the charge controller. I ordered one received it in 3 days and it works like a charm it is hooked to my Harbor Freight 100 amp folding suitcase solar and charging a 100 amp 12 volt lithium battery.
Nice build!
Please make a video how you build your power station. I want to build one my self. 😊😊😊 Thanks and more power!

Thanks for posting the build. For truck camper, van the use of a DIY portable power station allows for greater 12 volt DC, 120 watt output than the typical Bluetti/Goal Zero/Jackery of the same watt/hour battery size. In my opinion, a 120 watt DC output doesn't cut it for some of the larger and better off road 12 volt DC portable air compressors. With an Anderson connection output port - the output can easily be 240 watts, which is more than enough for current surge at air compressor start up.
Great post, going used leaf acid battery and that is it for now, many dollars for upgrade.
That little battery monitor is really nice for the price, I just got one.
Pretty cool
Very quality build. I did something very similar using a different case. I was trying to figure out the battery monitor screen. I might have to pick that up.

Awesome ⚡️ 👁 ❤ IT!
Put a thermal temperature switch in for the fan comes on when it wants to
Really NICE job, Nick. Yes, I know about having polarity reversed on those push-in connectors and frying a device. Ugh. Next time I build one of these I'll used the 2-pin connectors with the threaded collar connector. Suggestion: Have 2 fans, one on the opposite side, exhausting air. Also, when you can afford it, get a LiFePO4 lithium battery. It weighs a third of Lead-acid, and lasts twice as long. I'm looking forward to getting a DC fridge like yours.

nice to add an led light or 2.. drop in a rv stereo/ speaks! .. 50 amp connector for engine jump?
Fabulous!!!! I’m curious how much the whole unit weighs as well as how much say the battery weighs on its own? I take long multi-state, thousand mile motorcycle trips with my wife, her dog while pulling a small cargo trailer so I’m constantly looking for ways to save on weight. While also being able to have and use certain things that run on electricity is ideal. I purchased a Jackery unit but it did not seem to last very long for what we needed it for. Also how much do you believe you put into this system in terms of money? Thanks!
I have the same mppt solar charger. One review on Amazon had a picture of the solar controller after it caught on fire. That mppt solar controller gets very hot. I was afraid it would cause some kind of damage. I am using a Lensun 20a waterproof mppt solar charge controller to charge my two diy battery builds. One is 640wh (12v 50a Lifepo4) The other is 1280wh (12v 100a Lifepo4)

Strange things happen, but it mostly likely caught fire because it was hooked up backwards. This controller doesn’t have polarity protection in it. In my experience, it produces almost no heat and that’s charging at about 8 amps. It’s always been room temp to the touch.
Excellent presentation and well described! Just a minor point....Can I respectfully suggest you move the camera more slowly...I got dizzy the way it chopped and changed! Keep up the good work!

do you have a circuit breaker for the main fuse box? i put one on mine because it's a massive 120AH battery and i thought it would be better safe than sorry.
Great job! I built one with a 30A batt and it runs my 47w ICECO fridge for 7 hrs before the fridge shuts down for low v. Something to think about… how does the box vent that hot air when recharging on AC? The fan is just a current draw. I would move the AC charger out of the box and let solar do the charging and dump the fan. Deletes two items. Just a thought but great job!
@wrenchingvids

Thanks. I’ve been using it for over a year and hot air or the fan is not a problem. Yes the charger gets a tad warm when in use but nothing to be concerned about. And the fan, I could have left it out. It’s switched, so not always running but when it is on it’s only like 0.1a draw. I installed a 20amp dcdc charger in the truck that does 90% of the charging now. Runs my fridge and everything else for 2-3 days with no help

That fridge has a compressor? I thought most of those smaller, portable ones use thermoelectric cooling through peltier effect. Added after the fact: Oops, I guess I have some reading to do. I just found a car refrigerator with similar form factor that uses r134. Alrighty then. The one I found claims to be thermoelectric so that's even more confusing.

What size fuses do you have for the USB and cigarette
@wrenchingvids
Ай бұрын
Most automobile applications run a max of 12 amps in those types of outlets. So I put a 15 amp fuse on them
Hi, why do you move your fridge off your battery when you are charging the battery using your noco plug in charger? tia
@wrenchingvids
Жыл бұрын
So the fridge draws about 4.5 amps and the battery charges at 5 amps. If you have the fridge plugged in to the battery while its charging, it’ll never charge up. It’ll just stay at whatever % it’s at. Think like if you had a bucket with a spigot on it and kept that spigot open as you fill the bucket up with the hose.

@@wrenchingvids gr8 thx. My charger said to not charge the battery under a load. Lead acid and smart charger. If I had to I could attach the positive to 1 battery and the negative to the shunt and turn the shutoff switch to the bus. But I wud rather connect the charger to the buses. I guess it works off of voltage. I wonder how it works with solar also feeding the bus bar?

In the process of planning out a power box... I see a lot of these with fans to ventilate, seemingly just to keep the charger inside the box while charging without getting too hot. Is that the only reason for ventilation? If so, I think I'm going to opt toward simply storing the charger in the box, and when time comes to charge the battery, I'll simply pull out the charger and leave it out when charging since it'll be plugged into a wall anyway at that point and doesn't need to be portable for that duration. I'd rather have a little more protection from the elements with no fans and holes as this will be on the boat.

I'll go through and post the link on all the comments so you can view my Amazon page. This Amazon listing is actually my own and not an affiliate link so any purchases made go directly to me! Repairability and expandability. If something breaks, like say a port or the screen, you can easily very cheaply replace that part. If you want to add more usb ports or another 12v socket, you can get them on amazon for $10 and install it in 5 minutes. If your battery wears out(which would take years), you can throw a new one in in a matter of minutes.
