DIY option for monitoring solar off grid system

Ойын-сауық

Schneider doesn't currently have a plug and play monitor for the off grid solar equipment. But, with help from Schneider, I put together a DIY option. This uses a Samsung tablet as the monitor, and connects to the insight home.
The most difficult part of this project was setting up the static IP address. I needed to make the Insight home and the Samsung tablet talk to each other. I'm not good with computers, so making this happen was a long and difficult process.
If you are not good with computers already, you might not want to try this.

Hi David thanks for share all your experience with us. The Schneider ecosystem is one of the best in the market, but, since is not all in one the cost keep adding. I have your same setup but with a 4048 instead. I use an app called fully kiosk for android. This app let you set the tablet in kiosk mode. This allow the tablet to display only the insight web page and nothing more. This prevent the app to keep logging off and you can even use the camera as a motion sensor so you can turn off the display off and it will turn on with motion. This preserve battery and the life of the screen.

that sounds really great if the app would use the camera to detect motions and turn on cause the tablets battery otherwise would die quite soon. thanks for sharing. UPDATE: the app is most likely called "Fully Kiosk Browser & Lockdown" and has quite good reviews for all home automation systems and visulisations like HA I had not found 'fully kiosk for android'

Hi Jorge I have a couple questions for you as you have the inverter I am thinking about getting. 1. How do you think the Schneider ecosystem compares to the Victron ecosystem? 2. Do you need wifi or cell service to use the ecosystem? I have an off grid cabin and don't have either but want to have data and a visual display of what is going on. 3. Lastly, how much noise does the 4048 make? does it have loud fans and the hum from the transformer? Thinking of installing this in a closet that is near bedrooms but don't want a bunch of noise. Thanks

Very cool project and congrats for slogging through the technical stuff to make it run. Keep up the good work. I built an off grid battery bank cabinet with solar input and several inverters to run fridges and freezers despite power outages. We lost power 4 times in March alone during the heavy NorCal rains, so it came in handy. My Victron Smart Shunt and Renogy BT Bluetooth will not reach into my house. I bought a Pet Camera from Amazon for $50 and parked it a foot away from my Renogy SOC display right after getting the system running. The app on my iPhone can not only clearly see the display of volts, watts, amps, % charge, and time remaining to charge/discharge. I can instantly see these things while at my brother's house 400 miles away. I look at the display through my cell phone at least 20 times a day while I'm out and about. The system has been running 24/7 for a year now. That's some cheap and dirty monitoring! The cam has pan, tilt, zoom, a microphone, and a laser pointer. I sometimes check to hear the inverter fans cycling under different loads. I also heard the inverter fault alarm early on while testing the system. Its 46kwh, 12k total with 3 inverters, one is split phase. My son came over while I was on a 4 day trip and could not find my MC-4 crimper. I was able to remotely turn the camera around and use the laser to point to the shelf where I throw all of my solar connectors these days. That was pretty cool.

This is one area that I think Victron has excelled at. Thier systems are leaps and bounds better than any other current vendor for equipment monitoring. Not only can you view your system easily at a glance, but you can also share it with the rest of the world. When I was first building my system, I found it really helpful to look at other active systems to understand how they operated and the effectiveness of them. Of course, the build is never completely finished. Like you, I'm always thinking of ways to improve it.

I've been doing this with an old iPad for the past year on my dual XWPro system. WiFi is much easier than trying to do a 2-node LAN with Ethernet. The Insight Edge devices take care of all the IP addressing stuff when you connect directly to the wireless access point on the device. I keep my tablet on the kitchen counter so it's easy to reference in the house. Also, the Guest login to Insight Local does not timeout like Admin or User does, reguardless of network connection.

Their business model (most other brands do the same) is to have your inverter connected 24/7 to their sever and collect all you data. So they are reluctant to give you a way to monitor you production directly rather than using your online account. I consider that inverters monitored online by the firm as a deal breaker. My inverter is a dum one. No monitoring what so ever (well... it beeps when something goes wrong). It does what it's made for : inverting current. That's it. I have built my own monitoring system integrated to my Domoticz system. It's totally separated from the inverter, powered by a 12V DC solar system, thus if the inverter fails, the monitoring does not. Also down converting 12v to 5V dissipates less heat that using the 230V to 5V wall plug (I live in Europe). Since my raspberry pi runs 24/7 every Watt counts.

I can imagine that networking can be like chinese language to most people while it is relatively easy to others, I got my experience early, in dormitory, in early internet days, when older students decided to wire entire dormitory, all rooms, into a single network (wires simply window to window, on the outside wall), we had no choice but get a network card and learn how to configure it, extremely exciting early internet days. So congratulations for pushing through it. Same way I've learned from youtube how to plumb stuff or how to remove tiles on the roof to mount solar panel rails.

It’s a shame that “Solar Assistant” doesn’t support Schneider inverters. If it did you can see everything about your system. Charts, graphs, live data, prediction of use, history, battery details, cell balance, make most setting changes, time of use control(off peak) all from anywhere from your phone or pc. For about $180 and sets up in under 30 minutes. They are adding more inverters but it could be some inverter manufacturers aren’t sharing source codes so they’d be SOL.

IP address needs to be 192.168.3.2 Subnet, gateway and DNS server are fine. Device IP always has to be different than gateway and DNS. Gateway and DNS can be the same in your (and most home) network. Static IP is a set IP you choose. DHCP means the server (or source) automatically assigns IP addresses to devices it “sees” downstream of its network.

You will benefit from the work to understand the LAN and how it works cause there are many devices out with such an internal server. Might be a good idea for Schneider to get an App running or find a better solution for a full immersive browser view without chrome menu and so on which is usually called kiosk mode. Also a PIR sensor that turn the display on when needed would be a lot more beneficial cause otherwise your battery will dy sooner or later, that in the galaxy tab cause usually the battery suffers from such applications with 247 display turned on. There might be a way for the samsung to detect eye movement if I do remember right and then turn on. The best would be an e-Ink display cause that is quite more efficient and slow update rate of only a few times a second does not matter. Great project idea.

The reason for no batteries is that the batteries in their prior editions (branded tablets, think it was like a galaxy) suffered battery buldge due to constant charge. I see a lot of smart house will experience the same due to the fact that tablets don’t last 2 years constant charge.

The SMA sunny islands are very well made inverters. I had a little bit of a hard time with the settings on the SMA's. They want to be closed-loop communication with a BMS. Unfortunately, they don't talk to all the battery options out there. If you try to use them open-loop, based on Voltage, they default to a FLA algorithm. This meant I had to lie in the settings, and still do a manual re-set about once a month. There is a hack to work around this, but it wasn't something I could do on my own. Way too much computer coding.

Have you considered using modbus protocol to monitor/configure your inverter via your home network? I have the same inverter and have been successfully monitoring and doing some dynamic configuration via Openhab with the modbus binding for more than a year. Modbus itself is insecure so it's good to have some network restrictions on the access, but it is powerful in that it exposes nearly every knob and stat available. I'm assuming the Insight Home supports this, I have the older Insight Gateway. Keep the videos coming, they're interesting to watch!

@@DavidPozEnergy Understood. I've been adding improvements to my home automation setup for years, which has included adding support for managing my inverter. It makes it possible to easily see the status of the inverter and various stats on power, but also to trigger automated actions based on whatever conditions you choose. In my case, I do things like: * when it's a really hot day and I worry there could be rolling blackouts, I set the battery recharge threshold higher * when battery charging kicks in compute a running estimate of the remaining charge time * choosing when to recharge the batteries based on outside luminance over the past few days (so that my solar is likely producing enough to cover the charging since I'm on the grid) * dynamically set the evening load-shaving start time based on when the luminance drops below a set threshold average for the past few days * when inverting from battery turn off unnecessary lights and power use and disable automation In addition it gives me a customizable UI and mobile app and the ability to view historical data for anything I choose. I admit it's not trivial to setup, I can't even guess at how many months of my life are invested in the custom rules and functionality I have, but it's powerful and useful for me.

I ran the Schneider without communication for quite awhile. At the time, the Schneider XW PRO was acting as an inverter only. I never connected anything to the "AC INPUT" terminals. This means there was no need to program the type of battery, or generator, or grid settings. I charged the battery using my external solar charge controller (Growatt and Victron). The external charge controller was programmed to charge the battery to 56V on the charge controller itself.

It seems redundant unless you need to control the Schneider system via an ethernet connection. For that you can just hook up your laptop when needed.

I live in Jamaica where we use 50hz but only 1 appliance which is my washing machine does not work with the 60hz. I prefer to keep my inverter on 60hz but would like to change it to 50hz when I want to use my washer and then switch back when I'm done. For now I have to use the grid for the washer. @@DavidPozEnergy I think what you are saying is the WiFi access point of the Insight home times out - not the tablet itself? If so, that is because the Insight Home Wifi access point it is supposed to be used for temporary setup. If you wanted to go full WiFi, you would join the Insight home to your home network WiFi, and join the tablet to that home WiFi network also. Then Insight Home will then connect to the internet, and you can use the phone apps also with the Schneider cloud.

Hi David, good job on figuring it out. Regarding the networking issues, I do find it strange how you figured out so many other things, which I imagine you had to read and research. Not sure why filling in the network settings should be different from any other kind of technical knowledge. Anyone can just try things and maybe it will or won't work, but for any system you've had to work on before and explain, it seems like there were many things you had to read and research. Why is this a sore spot more than any of those?

I'm not sure. Perhaps I just have more background knowledge with physical things (tools, bolts, lumber). Sometimes the instructions say "Gateway" and sometimes "IP Address" or other names. But, come to find out, I type the same answer into both. I'm used to words meaning different things. LOL.

@@DavidPozEnergy Your videos have helped me out, so hopefully this helps you. IP Address = identifier for the device, subnet = subset of the entire network which can be accessed (aka local computers), subnet mask = like painters tape for the network. A binary 1 means not local, Gateway = the computer you talk to which can let you access the network which is not on your subnet. DNS = The device which knows how to translate names to IP, DHCP = shout onto the network, "HEY I need to know how to configure myself!", DHCP server = machine which will respond (having more than one is generally confusing), Static = supply all the numbers at the start (avoids problems if the DHCP server is offline at the expense of figuring it out ahead and keeping it updated manually), Self assigned = randomly pick an IP in a known range, see if anyone seems to be using it, if not, start using it (similar to DHCP, but you don't get any Gateway or DNS, because it's not possible). Devices are not limited to a single network, if you need/want more than one. There is more nuance to this, but this should be close enough to keep it from being a full on mystery for day to day configurations.

Not sure why you went with Schneider when your Growatt system was working perfectly. I guess Schneider was willing to pay you more. The Schneider equipment is expensive and does not combine all the functions that "all in one" inverter/DC charge controller/AC chargers have built in at a very reasonable price. Even the built in display on the growatts was superior.

Same issue but parallel before PV combiner (assumed only 1 inlet on combiner). 3. My Inverter (LF Inverter) brand new connected to my PV and in 5 minutes the inverter burned on toroid part the question is, can it be because the PV giving "bad input" ? Because after that I parallel that pv to my Growatt and the inverter also shutdown but the inverter was okay, can be restarted. Thanks

Hi Agus, Discussing parallel/series connections for a solar array: If you parallel solar modules they must be the same Voltage. If you series connect solar modules they must be the same Amperage. The Vmp (Volts at maximum power) should be above the "snap" Voltage of the charge controller. The Voc (Volts open circuit) should be 25% lower than your maximum input Voltage to your charge controller. (This number can sometimes be lower depending on your locations design temperature)

I've seen it myself with a phone that I left plugged in 24 7 in order to forward text messages. The smart home people have been dealing with this for years.
