DIY Oil Filter for our Freeze Dryer Vacuum Pump
Making an oil filter to use with the vacuum pump of our Harvest Right freeze dryer. This is how we made a filter, to filter out the water and particles that get into the oil of our vacuum pump, using a yogurt container and paper towels. We have been filtering the oil this way for over 3 years.

Thanks so much great to have spares if you are having issues getting a product great money saver !thank you for sharing …
Just bought a freeze drier and made 1 tray of skittles and 2nd batch of watermelon.Drained the oil and its almost black. Hasn't separated after 20 hours. Is this normal?? All the videos I've seen haven't seen oil like this.

No, that's not normal! Was the watermelon prefrozen? This filter does a good job cleaning the oil, but I've never had the oil start out black, just cloudy from small amounts of water mixed in. I'm not sure where the black would come from. This video shows the oil from my sister's newer machine (late 2022) after 40 batches - kzread.info/dash/bejne/h52Wq5mFiKnIktY.htmlsi=AwQ1DYs7G61v2bES
Would you have a faster drip time if you froze your used oil first and got rid of the block of ice that the water turns into and keep your filter from clogging up with water saturation? I know not all of the water would be rid of in that first step but a great deal would be so I would assume that less water to filter would be better?

The drip time really didn't change when I've tried that and the total time is increased greatly with the added freeze time. (and for me it's not worth the risks of spilling the oil in the freezer) I have stopped squeezing out the filter material. which is holding most (almost all) of the water. Now I'm just tossing it and replacing that much oil each time.
great idea, I'm definitely going to try this method. What are you looking for to know when it's time to change your filter? do you count cycles of filtration or judge by the colour of the filtered oil? LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! thank you

Thanks! If you have a newer vacuum pump, like my sister's new 2022 machine, the oil is still very clean even after 30 batches. With those new machines, they don't need a continuous flow filter system like I use with mine, only this simpler filter. With the new machines this filter is going to last a year or more. With my older vacuum pump (2017) this filter will only last a half dozen times, and I know it's no longer effective because water starts going through it into the bottom.

@@SchoolReports excellent, thank you. My machine is 2021 - requires oil change every 5 batches. I live outside the USA and the harvest right filters are hard to get so this is a great alternative.

@@bjt92 I think this filter works better than any I've received from Harvest Right; and really inexpensive. For the oldest vacuum pumps the continuous filter pump system works well. It keeps my oil clean for about 30 batches between draining and changing its filters.. By any chance does your vacuum pump have a round knob about half way down the side, labeled ballast?

@@SchoolReports yes it does :)

@@bjt92 After my sister got her new machine with it's fancy newfangled 😁 Premier Vacuum Pump which has a gas ballast feature, I started to wonder if the ballast feature worked on mine. I've been trying it out at different settings and so far I'm liking what it does; the oil is staying much cleaner, for a much longer time. I may do a short video about it later.
Are you currently using this filter setup, or the one that you built using the 3-D printer parts? Also, have you noticed any off flavors or smells from the freeze dried food, due to dirty oil - or at all? We just did a batch of sour cream and it has a strange taste to it...

The next video (coming soon) is more about the automatic, continuous flow oil filtering system. (it's not really continuous, we have it run 15 seconds each minute) This filter is just what we use to clean the oil that comes out of the continuous flow oil filters when we clean them. As far as flavors or smells, the oil should never have any interaction in any way with the foods in the freeze dryer. As far as I know, things should, and can, only go one way; from the vacuum chamber to the pump.
