DIY of Small Pneumatic Desktop Injection Mold Machine

Ғылым және технология

PART-1 DIY video of how to design and build a small miniature pneumatic air actuated desktop molding machine. The video series covers the complete build from start to finish. The video will cover all the parts needed and there details in order to make and build a machine. It will also cover the build details of all the parts and how they are assembled into a completed unit. PDF's and 3D CAD files and also kits and parts of the complete machine will be offered on www.clifford-mfg.com website for folks to purchase if they are interested.

Im in the plastics industry 29yrs and from everything ive seen, this is really a "cool" and basic machine. Im planning my own as well due to small mouldings to be made for my hobby which is model trains(HO scale for me😂😎)already has started to make miniature molds for these articles. The machine is already determined to be similar, though im gonna use toggle connector pieces for the clamping side along with servos for both sides. Im interested in your electronics side of that machine so ill be waiting patiently😅

Hello Clifford and thanks for the video. Well you really hit a nail here because as I suspected many people including me interested in this thing, home/small batch injection molding even enterprises, but so far not many sources only the gingery design and recently precious plastic but without pneumatic force injection. So much more on 3d printing which is only for prototyping mainly. Will you make the plans in metric units, too?

making my own rn, been doing research, have several different design pathways all using different methods of force for the plunger. The pneumatic is super simple but the actuators just dont have much force at all esp for the larger injections and im afraid it wont cut it.. A hydraulic one using an old compressor motor and a power steering pump for the hydraulic pump, and an mechanical electric powered screw jack (3 ton car scissor jack) all methods work in practice but i dont want to continue the pneumatic actuator because of low force capability. The screw jack one is super simple. Any of you all have experience doing larger parts with a pneumatic air cylinder?

Great video and design Scott - I'm subscribed! One suggestion for future video's: it would be great if you could add a "compressor plugin" to the audio when you are editing. Thank you for replying ... I will for sure do as you suggested about my audio. I will look up the compressor plug in and install it. Does this plug in cost extra? Honestly the video editing thing took me a while to master ... no that's a bad word ... to get to were I can in a timely manner get them done! Its like learning a CAD package from scratch!! You asked about the material: The material I use is called Santoprene and the manufacture is ExxonMobil Chemical. Note this type of material is available from several manufactures and in several durometers and colors, but under different brand names. I believe they own the brand name Santoprene. They actually have a website named www.santoprene.com The material shot in my video is part number 101-55 PJC3196. If I remember right the 55 in that part number is the durometer. In my area there are a few distributors for these types of materials and typically you can get small samples quantities for free to test. Just talk a good story about your plans for it!

@@scottclifford-cliffordmfg4148 Thanks for the info on Santoprene. Apparently it's a TPE, but it behaves like vulcanized rubber? Very interesting! @@GrumpyHeadDesigns I will offer a STP file of the complete machine, it will include every part nut and bolt as well as PID controller and all pneumatic parts. Most the peripheral parts you can buy from Amazon and I list the links. You can use the CAD files to make your own frame and barrel assembly and build them from scratch. You can also buy the kit from me and assemble it that way also. I will also offer the barrel and push rod for sale in case you do not want to tackle that or you can make it yourself using the CAD in the STP file provided. For all the details you can watch my videos or you can ask me any question you want and I promise to always give you and answer. I have been doing product design for well over 30 years, I would be glad to help anyone especially kids in either learning or making there own product's! I will be glad to help you in any way I can ... Scott

@@scottclifford-cliffordmfg4148 I am glad to hear that! I am disabled and like I said, run an after school makerspace for the kids to keep them out of trouble and to offer them additional learning for real world examples. I am not funded so everything comes from out of my personal pocket or if the kids or their family members contribute, that is when we are able to do big projects. When we make stuff from what is built, those items then get sold to bring in some additional revenue for future builds and shop upkeep. An injection mold machine would open up MANY doors for their learning experience and offer a few more sellable items! Time will tell what the parts will cost to get made since we don't currently have a way to machine certain parts O_o I truly appreciate your contribution to society and we are excitedly waiting for your future vids! I told the kids about this yesterday and they reacted like a fan watching their favorite team win the super bowl! LOL

Could be I guess but on a much a larger scale! Typically an extruder would have an auger for the pushing element so it could be continuous.

If you can make it your self you can defiantly do it in the range of $400 dollars. I do sell some on my website but I sell a frame and barrel for $1800 dollars. If you want it fully built its quite a bit more. Hope this helps. Website: clifford-mfg.com

a lot of it depends on what your material is an how big your part is. You don't wont it to big i would say start at 100mil and work it up from there would be my suggestion. what are you suing to push the material in with? How many pound's? I went to 4mm because I was using mostly Santoprene and it is very sticky!!!

@@scottclifford-cliffordmfg4148 thanks again. So if I understand it right its good to have a removeable nozzle to try things out. Do you think that 3D- Printer nozzle could works? Sure they are pretty thin but it could be widened up to the diameter thats needed. This way they could be mounted with a thread to replace to difrent diameters. Still there is a long way for me to go. I am just about to build CNC machine with a friend. After it works fine id like to build injections molding machine. Do you have any good source of how to design a mold? Mostly i am interested of how to design the runners and gates etc. So that plastic does flow well everywhere around. Also I am courious about the pressure for the injection. Do you think that a tighten car spring will provide enough pressure? I dont like using a compresor, thats why.
