Having watched several KZread videos making your own laundry detergent the recipes are quite similar. It was very exciting to think that we could make our own detergent for much less money but have to say I am very disappointed. I can't understand why everybody says this smells so good; it smells good when you are making it but when your laundry is finished that's a different story. I have to add additional scent boosters in the bottom of my washing machine before starting. Also, I found streaks of what looked like grease on my sheets. It is the bar soap because it does not melt. So I began putting the detergent in a cup and adding the hottest tap water I could. Next load I put the detergent in a larger bowl and hot water. It took 2 minutes in a 1,000 watt microwave for me to get the soap melted into the water. Since all of the dry products are laundry boosters I did not find the clothes to become as clean as with a regular store-bought laundry detergent. Now I am adding Dawn dish detergent as a degreaser. For those who may be interested in trying that it's one teaspoon per small load, two teaspoons per medium, three teaspoons for a large load. I have an extra capacity top loading washer so I have used two tablespoons of Dawn without a sudsing problem. If you try this keep in mind you need to watch for too much suds. I sure hope that this works and will enlighten others if they are having similar problems. It is not my intent to put this lady's video down in any way. It's just my honest feedback.

Thank you for providing your feedback and experience! I have not had issues with grease smears - you got that from this particular recipe or someone else's? It is important to dissolve the soap in hot water if you're washing in a cold water cycle. What are you using for scent boosters? I'm not sure store bought cleaners clean any better - they do a really good job of using artificial fragrances which cover up smells making us think our clothes are cleaner. I've found that when I use an unscented store-bought laundry detergent my laundry feels and smells the same as when I use a natural one. I do have a liquid laundry detergent recipe on here that I feel performs better and it uses a pure soap - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ln2tp6eRo6_chZs.html

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Thank you for reaching out. I am using the same ingredients as well as Zote soap finely grated, and Downy Unstoppables. I have used the same Unstoppables before making the DIY detergent. I learned today not to heat up my soapy water in a coffee cup...it just isn't big enough for two minutes heating. When washing my office clothes, I use cold water so I have to use the microwave to dissolve everything nice. I will continue to tinker to find what works. Thank you.

I USE DRY SOAP I premeassure and put in a pint jar add hot water stir just before use shake up when needed pour in. Washer as water goes in repeat as desired❤

I sure do make my own laundry soap. I call it soap because I grate a hard bar of soap for it ( I don't use Fels Naptha or Zote because I don't like the scent of either & it bothers me to smell it). I add borax, baking soda & washing soda. I've had very good results using this combination. I am going to make some, tho, using Sal Suds (I've ordered it)....so that will make it laundry detergent & I'm excited to see if I notice any difference in our laundry. We don't have much for challenges, tho. I have Charlie's laundry soap on hand....use that once in awhile. But I gave up on the (what might be called) standard laundry detergents from the stores years ago. I like making my own ! I like that they cost less & don't have dangerous ingredients. I have made liquid detergent...but I like powdered. It takes so little time to dissolve it first....just not an issue at all for me. I have a top-loading HE washer w/an agitator. I haven't had any issues w/our laundry not smelling good. I smell it after it has been in a drawer or a closet for weeks after being washed & there's no scent at all. One thing I'd like to mention....leave your washing machine door/lid open for awhile after doing a load. It needs time to dry. If the door /lid is closed, your machine will develop nasty odors....mold might grow. I wonder if that's why some people aren't having good luck w/how their laundry smells.

I haven't ever tried it but looking forward to doing so.

I’m so so happy to have found your channel! You’re so informative on why these store bought items are so harmful for us & I think everyone should hear about it! Quick question regarding “detergent”. I’ve been researching DIY laundry mixes and most people call them detergent but from my understanding detergent and soap clean differently. If you use a soap base it will build up in your clothes & washer & prevent the cloths from actually getting clean after a while plus harm/ruin your washer. However, if you use detergent it helps to bind to the soil & wash down the drain. Can you weigh in on this topic? Also, you’ve mentioned the Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds have plant based surfactants which to my understanding are what make detergent effective, so I’m curious if it is considered a soap or a detergent or if that even matters since it’s natural. Thank you so much!!

Hi Caitlyn! Great question and you're totally right! So Castile Soap is a soap - it gently removes dirt and oils, and is best used to wash your hands and body. I don't recommend it for cleaning because it isn't a surfactant, or a detergent, and it can leave an oily residue because it's based in olive oil. So Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds is a detergent - it contains SLS but it is processed in a different way (they have a lot of info on their website about it) so it doesn't contain the toxic byproduct that most SLS detergents do. Anyway, a surfactant does bind to dirt and oil and remove it.

now i buy laundry detergent sheets from Amazon, for $ 10.00 dollars. i bought a box in may, and still have a couple of sheets left. and i just perched a second box that came this week. you get 200 sheets in a box and I gave some to my niece, she just went through 2 bottles of Persil detergent and a large bottle.. .i use to by Arm and Hammer oxi clean. but this is so much better just toss 1or 2 sheets in that's it.😊

Is this really a detergent since there are no surfactants in it? Without a surfactant, cleaning happens only by scrubbing, which modern washers cannot achieve. Detergents clean by removing surface tension, which releases dirt and grime so do not need scrubbing action to clean. I saw your recipe for liquid laundry detergent and you referred to Sal Suds as a surfactant, which I think would be a much better option for the efficient cleaning of clothing.

It should be noted that borax will ruin anything with stretch. I always swore by borax - until I learned this - now I know why I had to toss so many clothes. Would love to know how to prevent the problem.

Oh I've not had that happen before! Borax has been used in natural laundry detergents for decades. You could use super washing soda instead of the borax.

Can you suggest a replacement or alternative for the Borax? It's EWG rating is a D and is no longer sold in the UK or EU. Would you maybe double or triple the baking soda?

Borax is actually completely safe and a necessary nutrient. I take a pinch in my water every morning. Look up the Borax conspiracy for more information

Borax degrades elastic so be careful which clothes you use it on.

Major NO on the soap flakes! Putting soap in a dishwasher or washing machine will ruin the inner workings of your machine! The company will not honor the warranty if the machine has soap buildup. There are other recipes that do not include soap, that work far better. Other recipes are all over KZread now.

Yeah so soap flakes are similar to grated soap. So you could use a bar of soap and grate it. But it’s a lot more work - you gotta heat it up and melt it on the stove…

take out the insert in the tray for liquid. you can add powder there. there are people who will lie to you and try to convince you that homemade non-specific HE "cheap" detergent will kill your washer. don't listen to them....it's not true. they're probably P&G trolls ^_^

Lye is the main ingredient used in making hand soap. You will probably also know it as caustic soda.

I don’t think so - haven’t seen anyone with that issue yet. That’ll probably also depend on the hardness of your water.

@@mian.nguyen Hi! Yes this recipe is in my book. So, OxiClean is a great product, works very well, and they DO have an unscented option! If you're trying to keep it all natural, I'd make sure it's unscented.

You would be wasting your baking powder. That's for baking, not for laundry.

I dont think it is good idea mixing backing soda and washing soda. pH of washing soda would be down and not effective. Washing soda is not good with baking soda or citric acid or other pH 7 detergent. It is effective when washing soda meet something high pH. That is what I know.
