I have rescreened hundreds of Anderson windows with spline retainers and the last thing you want to do is use a hammer to reinstall them. You will bend open the channel on the frame that the spline expands into. I usually press it in as far as I can by hand and then put a wooden ruler or a paint stirrer on each side of the frame and squeeze it in with channel locks or adjustable pliers. If using fiberglass screen you may need to spread the spline slightly with a flathead screwdriver prior to install to offset the the difference in screen thickness.

Great video! I am missing screens on some of my windows and purchased the "you build it" kit from my local big box store. I had been putting off building these screens but this video has given the confidence to go ahead...Thanks!

You can now get them at HD a little cheaper if they're a standard size.

Okay but how do you install the locking mechanism that holds the screen in place? The kit you have linked doesn't include that. Andersen screens require those locks in order to lock into the window opening. Your video doesn't mention that at all.

The Andersen screens I bought at the Habitat ReStore had the knife style locks. I just cut them so I kept the locking mechanism on the piece I was going to use. Home Depot now sells them for around $50 depending on the size. Much better than the $150 price from Andersen six years ago. Maybe their patent ran out.

I recommend using a deadbolt hammer when working with window screens. That way there's less chance of damaging the frame.

What would you use a metal spline over rubber

  • @HouseDoctorRay

That's the way the Andersen screens are made. Doesn't really work any better than the rubber splines it just gives a more finished look.

Wish the DIY shows would remove Cabinets etc that could be recycled by Habitat or other groups > seems like the first thing all these shows do is get a sledge hammer and destroy everything . Everyone can't afford to buy new

Look all around for a sticker or on the latches. If your screens have the clips like mine they're Andersen. If your screens have the spring hoops on the sides or the top you can most likely use the universal kit I linked to in the video description.
