DIY Long Langstroth Hive Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For a full description of how to build a long langstroth hive check out our blog - www.revivalwoods.com/blog/202...
The best part of beekeeping is woodworking! Making new wood equipment each year brings new excitement. This hive is based on the designs from HorizontalHive.com, and we based our build from their plans. It is built from two by materials vs the standard, one by materials of conventional Langstroth hives. The long design allows for 30 deep frames, while eliminating the need to lift heavy boxes on and off during inspections.
Our horizontal hive plans are slightly modified, mainly for aesthetics.
Check out the Material list and Cut list to build it yourself at - www.revivalwoods.com/blog/202...
For this project we used:
Table saw with dado stack
Miter Saw
Router
Drill and Driver
Wood Glue
Screws

I just finished. I like that you rabbeted the ends in to help seal them. I wouldn’t have glued the bottom in case you would want to install a bottom screen or oil for mites. Depending on climate, an insulated gabled roof would be nice - I did that with mine and hinged it. I used a few pieces of scrap and a screw as a pivoting entrance “door”. Rotate it up to open to desired opening amount (90• vertical = fully open) or fully closed when pivoted horizontal. Simple and effective.

Hi! Would you like to know why the horizontal Langstroth hives have three entrances? I read that the beekeeper can choose one of them to position the brood chamber, and leave the other two closed. Was it just that?

This is how fast I think things will go when I start a project... even at .25 speed is too fast for how it really goes!

revival woodworks, you have the roof hinged the wrong way. open the roof towards the front so you are NOT in their flight path. THEY WILL STING! making the front legs higher and change the angle to catch and support the hive cover whenever you need to open it. with or without a gabled roof or secure with chains. the langstroth range style is good but a layens style is worth it merely by having longer frames. when they cluster for the winter there's more room for honey stores then langstroth frames. bee's move up not horizontally to get food. thicker wood is the way to go instead of double hive with insulation.

But opening from the back keeps the sun from the beekeeper. It's a double edge sword.

I would make the lid open the opposite side to let the bees keep landing while checking on them from behind

I plan to make a split from a strong hive that made it through the winter. Going to split them into the Long Langstroth. I will see about making a video of it.

I'm interested in these and building one or 2. But how do you add supers for collecting honey? Or are these just for reproducing bees and no honey collection

Have to use deep frames for honey, the bees usually naturally place brood by the entrance and honey further in. But you can also make a queen excluder to place where you want it.

Don't you need to paint it for weather resistance, unless you are making out of Huon Pine

Yes it will need a protective finish before going out into the bee yard. I personally don't paint my hives, but rather use a penetrating epoxy and then a spar varnish on the exterior only. I like the natural wood grain and gloss sheen (using left over products from wooden boat restorations).
