HORIZONTAL HIVE outperforming vertical? ... SURPRISED ME!

After a couple of months neglect I finally got out to the bee yard to inspect the beehives. The work in the garden has kept me busy. I knew that I couldn't wait longer...

I need more or less? That's a conversation with lots of different opinions. Many people like to put the hives in the shade, but others will argue that the hive beetles are worse when in the shade. Placing the hives in the full sun reduces pests. That's the position I've taken for now.

I couldn't imagine what it's like working in 100° Temps! Love my LLHs. Building 4 additional LLHs this year for a total of six. Using rough-cut lumber on these four. You reminded me that I need to check my yellow LLH for queen right. Both my LLHs came out of winter (May 1st) strong. But old Yellow swarmed its self queen less last month. I put a queen cell in it a couple weeks ago.

Finally, a good review on horizontal hives black mountain honey gave horizontall hives a really bad review, all I use is horizontal hives.. You can't manage them like to do a normal vertical hive. You need to give them at least a year or year and half to let them get established. I have layens frames though..I have 24 hives 29 colonies and they're all producing massive honey harvests. If you start with too many frames they'll never build out full frames, you need to get them to the point of nearly being honey bound with less frames then add them after a big flow or before depending when theyre nearly honey bound on the honey frames. Also once you have excess comb frames you can start a new layens hive relatively quickly. After 3 years of layens I have so much excess comb frames and that really helped me get other horizontal hives established quickly. When I started with horizontal I hated it, nearly burned the hive to the ground. I did tons of research and got as much knowledge as possible. After learning I had instant success. I was trying to manage them like a normal commercial hive before and I failed. One colony has 29 frames and it started with 8. So I'm guessing I'm doing something right. Haha but just remember this strategy works for me in my region in the Pacific Northwest. Might not work for you. But be careful if you let them get too honey bound they'll go crazy with building comb in all the wrong places. 😅 Took me a while to figure it all out.

  • @daddykirbs

Thank you for that. I love it when people share their experiences. I do think a deeper horizontal hive would be better. I thought about building one... I'll just add that to my long list of projects LOL.

How are the long hive legs holding up ? I have resorted to using old refrigerator bodies laid on their side to sit my horizontal hives on. Termites and the weight of the hives can result in the hive not being " horizontal " for long . Old refrigerators are easy to level up and stay level. Available at the local tip / recycling centre. Great video, your climate sounds similar to here in Queensland, Australia so your observations are relevant to us. Thank you.

Mine are sitting on rubber mats. Maybe that has helped with termites? I haven't had a problem with the legs yet.
