DIY LED Light Tube - Cheap LED tube modification

This is DIY led tube is an easy modification you can make to a cheap led tube to make it better suited for filmmaking and photography. Upgrading the LEDs from the low quality LEDs to a higher quality 12v led makes these lights able to run flicker free and off batteries. It also keeps the lights light weight and super portable and durable. If you only need one led tube its not that cost effective, but if you need multiple lights it makes it a fairly affordable project to make. You can also swap out the white LEDs for colored ones or even RGB LEDs(would require different connectors).

Nice production value man. A little more light on you when you are on screen wouldn't go astray. Subbed and hoping you'll stick with it!

Thanks! I have other content in the works just put it on hold with everything that's going on. What kind of content would you be interested in, filmmaking wise?

Thanks! I have most of the parts to make one but there a few things I'm missing to make it. With everything going on right now in the worlds its a project I have to put on hold. Are there other projects or tutorials you would be interested in?

I'd add one additional step to this: wrap the soldered end of the LED strip with electrical tape. That way you eliminate the risk of a short should the solder blobs come into contact with the aluminum housing. Otherwise, this is exactly what I've been considering building recently. Though I don't like the idea of stripping out the good electronics from these to make what I want. Though seeing your project and doing some research has led me down another rabbit hole: aluminum LED channel. The "donor" lights you used are basically just round aluminum LED channels with G13 caps. Still looking at options since pricing seems to vary wildly based on supplier. LightingWill (the maker of your "donor" lights) even sells it themselves, but unfortunately not the round channel used in their T8s.

That's a great step to add, a bit of hot glue would work too. Yeah pulling our the good electronics sucks and I wish there was another option. I haven't been able to find a supplier for the round LED channels. The Channels your talking about could be used as well. These were lights I had for awhile and had rewired to a 36v dc source to remove the flicker they had. But then decided to upgrade to better LEDs since there are much better ones available now then when I originally bought them.

@@mattinkpen Yeah hot glue would work as well. Again just something to insulate the connections to be safe. I'll share what I've found over the last couple days. For reference, I'm looking to make handheld portable tube lights for outdoor photography rather than indoor lights for a studio. LED Profiles (ledprofiles.com) is based in LA,CA. They make 4' and 8' channels with end caps and diffuser included. They sell them in 30mm, 26mm (about the size of a T8), and 15mm. (Link: ledprofiles.com/collections/round-led-channels) Another US company is Solid Apollo LED, but they are a bit more expensive. And 20mm is the widest round channel they sell - way too thin for what I'm doing. (Link: www.solidapollo.com/round-led-strip-profiles/) There are other US suppliers as well, and I'm looking at other extrusion options that I may be able to use with acrylic or polycarb tubing for cost saving.

Might be able to find a full frosted tube of some kind then just mount an aluminum strip to the inside too. The aluminum would need to be the same width as the inner diameter of the tube, which may make it tricky. Id love to make something similar to use underwater, but that's a way more complex project.

@@mattinkpen That's another thought I had as well since I can easily find aluminum flat bar at Home Depot or Lowe's. Then I'd just need to find end caps.

I've made little lights using that flat bar and then just clear acrylic over top. Just have to sand the outer surface to diffuse it some. When you finish your build let me know how it turns out!
