DIY KITCHEN CABINET MAKEOVER PT 3 (painting & making my cabinets shaker style) | Home Reno Ep. 11
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
After rearranging the kitchen cabinets and adding a hutch and faux vent hood, it was time to prep the cabinets for paint. Watch as I flipped my existing cabinets to be more of a shaker style. Lots of filling and sanding later and I was ready to paint. Of course it doesn't go as planned (it never does) but I love how this makeover turned out!

Wow! I love how creative it was to flip the doors and what a difference it made! And I would've never thought of doing the hutch in a different color but it looks great. I have the same problem with picking paint colors but I'm usually too lazy to repaint them unless I just truly hate it. I painted my lower kitchen cabinets green and they turned out darker than the soft gray/green I was aiming for. My husband said they looked like they were army green so I just saluted them and called it a day! ;)

Haha! I tried so hard to like the first color because I really didn’t want to repaint them and the paint was expensive! But I couldn’t do it. 🙈🙈

@@KelseyRomitoDIY not too bad! Last minute, I decided to wood fill the cabinet doors and I’m regretting it hardcore😭 but I’m determined to finishing sanding them down today and getting my first coat of primer on with my sprayer! I kid you not I’ve been working on these doors for 50 hours and I’m just holding my breath that it’s worth it😅
I remember wanting to do the exact same thing many years ago in a different house! My husband said, no you can’t do that! And I didn’t know the first thing about it Soo was like oh ok. There were no design vids to look up back then. I’m going to show him this vid! Lol I bet he won’t remember 😃. Any way, love you! You’re adorable and skilled!! :)

I know! 🙈🙈 The good thing about the flooring I used is that everything wipes off of it super easily. So it wasn’t a huge risk.

Hi! I just came across your video and I love how you redid your doors…very creative! Just curious if looking and the doors while closed from a side angle does it stick out because of the raised paneling that’s now flipped in the inside?
@KelseyRomitoDIY
Жыл бұрын
Yes it does stick out a little. Especially because my door sides were a little angled. But it doesn’t bother me.
I just found you & you are amazing! Two things: 1...that cabinet hack is genius!! I am currently in the process of painting my cabinets & they look just like yours. I think I'm going to do this before I get too far in. 2...where did you get that clock? I love it!!

What kind of paint did you use on the cabinets?
I love your youtube channel! You are such an inspiration! I am about to tackle painting my kitchen cabinets and wanted to know what kind of paint you used. Are you happy with the durability? Also, how long did it take you from start to finish? Thank you!

Thanks! I used sherwin williams paint and I’ve been very happy with how they’ve held up. Only a few minor touch ups needed from kids. It’s a big project so it will take a few days with drying times. It’s more inconvenient than anything.

I have light wood shaker style cabinets and they are 17 years old. I’ve been wanting to paint them for a while but am worried what if I hate the paint and wish I kept the natural wood? Also how did you paint them without seeing brush strokes or roller marks? Your kitchen looks amazing!
@KelseyRomitoDIY
2 жыл бұрын
I would paint a poster board in the color you like and hang it up over a cabinet for a little while to see if you like having the color there all the time. I use foam rollers on cabinets so you don’t see brush strokes.
Hi there, so we’re in the process of doing the cabinets and after painting we can see the shape of the filled holes through the paint 🥹 what did we do wrong???
@KelseyRomitoDIY
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry this is happening. You probably either didn’t fill the holes quite enough or over filled them. Close your eyes and run your hand along them. Whatever you feel will show up after painting.
what's the thin board you used to trim the drawers called? Love your videos

Amazing transformation! So you didn't sand the cabinets before painting?

Nope I didn’t. Just make you sure you clean them really well. The paint won’t adhere to any grease/oil
I've been binging your channel and lady you have GOT to stop calling yourself crazy! White paint is legitimately a) a pain in the ass b) really important to get right All I'm seeing is an extremely capable woman with an eye for design. Plus she's so pretty! So none of the negative self talk ok? ;)

Hi did you sand the cabinets? And what paint brand and type did you use? Thanks
@KelseyRomitoDIY
2 жыл бұрын
No I didn’t sand the cabinets. Just cleaned them really well with a degreaser. I used sherwin williams paint in eggshell/satin sheen (not super glossy but you’re still able to scrub/wipe the cabinets)
@venegasenmerida6307
2 жыл бұрын
Semi gloss is more cleanable satin comes out like flat
i must be watching this video the third time...love it so much :) question for ya, why didn't you go with paint sprayer? isnt the finish better than with foam roller on cabinets?
@KelseyRomitoDIY
Жыл бұрын
Yes the best finish is from a paint sprayer. I actually don’t own a sprayer. If I were to do it again, I think I would invest in one- especially with as many projects as I do!

Hi Kelsey! I am a serial watcher of your videos! I love them! Could you tell me if your cabinets are veneer? Mine are veneer and I am scared to get started.
@KelseyRomitoDIY
Жыл бұрын
I think they are solid wood but I’m not 100% sure. You can use the same technique I used in this video on veneer cabinets.
Did you use regular paint on the cabinets? Or cabinet paint?

Regular latex paint

What type of paint did you use? How’s it holding up ?
@KelseyRomitoDIY
Жыл бұрын
I used regular latex paint from sherwin williams. It’s holding up great. I love that I can wipe down the cabinets without worrying about messing up the paint.
Did you use cabinet paint that was flat, satin? It does not look glossy
@KelseyRomitoDIY
Жыл бұрын
I like to use eggshell. You can wipe them but they’re not shiny.
What kind of primer did you use?
@KelseyRomitoDIY

Just a regular latex primer from lowes I think. Nothing special.
You made this look so easy. I tried this with mine & you can see where I patched. Not sure what I did wrong 😔

You can see my patches in a couple of places too. It’s not perfect but much better than it was.
And even quicker way to cut a lot of boards to the same length is to tack a block of wood at your mark on your saw bench and just push the material up till it hits the block and then cut.

Way way too much white! Why didn't you add black knobs in the kitchen with the white cabinets like you did with the book shelves. You could have restained your new glass cabinet with a pretty wood stain and added black knobs to match the rest of the kitchen. Then use black or a dark gray grout on the white tile backsplash. This would have given you some warmth. Just my thoughts.
@KelseyRomitoDIY
2 жыл бұрын
I think the editing of this video is making the cabinets look white- they’re actually gray. Wish I could have stained the glass hutch but it’s not real wood so it had to be painted. I agree it would have looked beautiful. I have some kitchen videos after this adding warmth to the kitchen and I have some new ones coming soon. The kitchen is a continuous work in progress.
