If you get hot plastic on you, rub your fingers together right away. It balls up the plastic, and keeps all the heat from burning that one spot... same with hot glue.

I found that squeezing the bottle a few times once it's underwater and running will help push out any air bubbles trapped in the media and help the k1 begin tumbling faster.
Works great! About a month ago I made one of these and stuck it in my container pond. For 3 weeks nothing happened. The K1 media trapped air bubbles and just floated at the top of the bottle. I'd shake it every now and then to release the trapped air only for the media to trap more air and float unmoving. About a week ago I noticed some of the media at the bottom of the pile becoming fluidized. Hope sparked. This morning I woke to find all of the media tumbling just like it is supposed to! So easy to make! Really excited for more nitrifying bacteria to develop! Thanks Cory!
I have been watching numerous videos on this subject and yours makes this process look so easy. I will be trying it out as soon as my media arrives. Thanks
That soldering iron pointing that way gave me such anxiety. I felt like he was gona hit his arm talking. Thanks for the video bro, theyre all extremely helpful.

@@raisinggoldfishonabudget7058 The commercial breeders use this method but the fluidized containers wouldn't be the same as this home made bottle option. If you used this in your own pond then a simple sponge in the bottom would cover the holes and prevent unwated eggs/fry hopefully finding their way inside!
This is so cool! I am so new to the hobby that I have to research this type of filter / uses and pros and cons compared with sponge filter plus airstone or HOB, but I nerd out on DIY and love to learn new things. Such a cheap, simple, effective piece of gear. Brilliant. Thanks again for great content!
I like the soldering iron idea. Makes a nice clean cauterized hole.👍
Great demonstration, Corey! Thank you.
Really nice and informative video!! Thank you!!
Cory, thank you SO MUCH for explaining why it takes so long for the K1 to fluidize. That question had been driving me nuts for a while now XD
Hey Cory, excellent video. Thanks for going through the explanation of every step (like the sand being a waste trap, etc).

Hey Cory I love the video as usual man! I use DIY K1 media fluidized filters in some of my tanks as well, and I find making the hole that you insert your airline into smaller than the rest and wedging the tubing through that hole with no air stone allows the media to fluidize better initially.

+SevernRunAquatics I should have mentioned that. I find the never clogs don't restrict flow so I get the full flow out of them but you're correct that a larger bubble may help get things started moving more.

I like to use a nail in a pair of vice grips heated by a torch to make holes.
Great vid. I may try to replace some of my sponge filters with these. Really don't like the maintenance required on sponge filters. What kind of magnet is that attached to the water bottle & where is it sold? It occurs to me that if it's strong enough you could attach the filter to the side of the aquarium to leave the bottom clear.
thanks so much Corey , I've seen those in your tanks and wanted to ask about them,know I have a idea.l might try one or more in the near future .

Aquarium Co-Op As good as these moving bed filters are for hosting aerobic bacteria, would you/do you still use a solid waste catching filter?
@AquariumCoop
8 жыл бұрын
It is useful for sure. I use a sponge filter or just really heavy on the water changes.
I just install in my side sump filter, it didnt get moving btw. (3 section sump) I try and it didnt moving again, So i move to last section (pump back to aquarium, i open the hose so its move. Am i right? Why first cycle that kaldnes not moving around? I see your setup, only a tiny air and it moves
If i ever need to thread a needle.. ima call Cory. One in a million
Cool follow up to the new filter you are offering for sale! If you use this or the professional one in a sump what will this provide that the sump is not already doing? I am thinking of making a smaller version of what you made for your big tank at your house. Filter pads then under gravel filters with bio media on top. The a heater and then the pump back to the tank.
Question: Could you soak the new filter media outside of the tank for two or three days and have then put it in the bottle. In some of the tank water? Or soak the new media in one of those in tank fry holders?
Are these units intended to be used by itself or in tandum with a standard biowhewl filtration system? I'm so glad I found your video. I made one of these, installed it in my tank, and gave up after a few weeks as the media wasn't tumbling properly. Seems I didn't give it enough time
This is amazing! Can I benefit using this even though I have a fluval30 running in my 20 gallon long tank?
So in your opinion are these superior to regular sponge filters? Will we see these in your tanks in your shops instead of the black sponge filters?
Cory, how about seeding the K1? Like in a HOB or a canister filter? I'm going to try putting some in a reusable bag and see how long it takes.
nice vid. thanks for the idea. .. what if i take the kt kaldness and soak them in some beneficial bacteria from my other tank before putting in the two liter? wouldn't that get them spinning
how many of theses should i use for a 75 gal with just 1 tiger oscar???
I know this is an old video, but I was wondering; can you use chopped up cubes of coarse foam as the media? My thought is that it would be much quieter and would possibly fluidize sooner
wow amazing! like that but... for shrimp tank did you have an idea how to improbe the system to avoid shrimp aspiration? thanks ;)
Cory- what is the largest tank that will work for this 2 liter k1 filtration system?
Would there be any difference of using K1 Micro vs regular K1? Is there a better size bottle for small tanks (10-20 gallon)?
Is there a way to stop fry from getting stuck like making the holes smaller?
I have a juwel rio filter. I stuck my k1 in pantyhose tightly in my filter it cant move around. I have sponges above it too... Should i just take my filter out and use your method instead? Or should i take everything out of the filter and just fill it with the k1? I dont know what to do :(
hi ive made one similar but I've noticed a lot of which looks like waste matter around the weight stones is that normal
so to help with the fry or shrimp getting in the bottom holes i was thinking a cut pair of ladies stocking slid over the holes would avoid them climbing in the bottle... i would just keep and eye out for waste getting clogged in the stocking so just rinse them out ever so often...
I think they are an excellent idea and very basic aswell.... But what about the nitrate element ! These bottle filters are excellent at ammonia and nitrite removal but not nitrate...... Any ideas how to combat nitrate....!
wouldn't plastic mesh/screen do the same thing or do you need a solid wall ?
Would this work in a half liter bottle? I'm running on an Eheim starterkit spongefilter now, and I dont like it - It creates too much flow. But I'm thinking to build one of these and put them on a timer so during the day it will be just bubbles and eventually filter and night it is silent - while also running the spongefilter untill the new one is well-cycled. Its a planted 54L tank with shrimp, snails and guppys (because of you 😍).
Hi Cory, excellent video! I'm going to be making some myself. If there any maintenance that you do on these?

hi great video. newbie here. how does the maintenace of these filter works
Would it help it if you added Tetra Safe Start?
If you want the media to start moving as soon as you put the bottle in, just have the air going before you drop in. Not after.
So this can replace a sponge filter or any filter if you’re in a pinch and have the materials in your home?
I put half on bottle, and half above airstone hanging, so both cycling, then i will put in back on bottle, it's better than having on delivery packet
Corey, I see a sponge filter in that tank that has no air flow to it. When you run these K1 filters are they the only filtration on a tank or do you use them in combination with a sponge (or other) filter? If the aesthetics are a concern, do you ever think of maybe trying to hide the bottle in something like a black acrylic tube thats full of holes? Or do you think a combination of this and a quasi HMF filter might work? Maybe hide this bottle behind a corner filter of poret foam?
@AquariumCoop
8 жыл бұрын
+Rich's Fishes Well in this video, some of the sponges are intake sponges that were just dropped into the tanks to help seed them faster as I dropped 300 cichlids in each of those tanks. As for hiding it, sure you could dress these up quite a bit, or put them in sumps. But for my fish room I don't bother. I think the simplicity of them and their cheap cost is the lure. By the time you buy acrylic and make something, perhaps there was a better mouse trap to build anyways.

+Aquarium Co-Op lol good point!
If you soak the media 1st so it gets waterlogged, then add it to the bottle and run it in your sump soon after, the beads will flow properly right away instead of taking days .
My media doesn't move in the bottle I have it hook up to a sponge filter does it still work
Thanks so much for this. Do you know if these things are solid or hollow?
@AquariumCoop
5 жыл бұрын
They are hollow.
Do you think this is possible with sand instead of K1?
Hey, Im currently planning on making my current aqurium "filter themed" in the sence that, just like a showcase, it will have various filtration and I was wondering if there is a problem with having loads of filtrartion. Is there really to much of a good thing?
@MrDanAng1
5 жыл бұрын
Squidgy animation The only problem it might cause is high flow in the tank, which is a problem for some fishes. If you select fishes from high flow environments, you can circumvent that problem. Otherwise, filtration beyond a certain point is just expensive and/or redundant, it's not dangerous or detrimental for the inhabitants of the tank.

Bio filters will only grow to the extent they are "fed" by waste products. He could drop that filter in a tank of distilled water with no fish or animals in it and it would look the same a year from now.

Isn’t the one in the right better ? Because it’s actually blocking the debris and filtering the water and stays on top of the bottle ?

Can these be used for a 130 gallon indoor pond with goldfish?
@aquarium Co-Op, Cory why don’t you use these in your tanks and ponds now? Ugly or did you figure out that the sponge filters were better! Just curious.
Which 1 is better sponge filter or k1 filter?
Verygood amonium nitrat zero

Hello friends Please say me how much k1 media is required for 10000 liter of water
If you want to get off the glues they use on pop bottles/ peanut butter jars, etc just rub peanut butter on it and wait a while. Wipe off.. you may have to repeat a few times but the peanut oil in peanut butter will take it right off. no harsh chemicals.

@AquariumCoop

+SonarIsDead Usually a couple of days to start fluidizing depending on air flow. But to be fully cycled more like 6 months to be as efficient as it gets.
