Alternative to cutting the baseboard - attach a piece of baseboard to the top / back of the book shelf so that the top and bottom are both flush.

Use a old plastic card like a old gift card to spackle, instead of using fingers. Gives a better finishing too :)

Love this DIY! To avoid cutting the base board trim, we made arches at the base of the Billy Bookcase to be slightly large enough to accommodate the trim using a jigsaw. Once we did that that the bookcase fit flush against the wall. After that we secured it to the wall with the bracket and screws that came with it.

I have been know to add a stronger back board, which provides more stability, vs the super thin cardboard backer. Luan, a thin , but stiffer wood, is also an option to increase stability, vs using the drywall wall. Just ideas, if someone doesn't want to cut their wood trim, or use the walls.

The back board actually helps with stability on these type of shelves. I have had both backless and with the board and the ones without the boards always start to lean over and eventually break apart. The one with the board in the back has been used by my kiddos since they were toddlers. My youngest is 16 and it’s still standing. Lol.

I've seen a few IKEA hacks with the billy bookcase on it's side with a seat cushion the shelves were shoe bins. Love this idea. Looks very custom. Another home run for you. This channel is so awesome.

So glad you are teaching a younger (girl) generation how to be able to build stuff!! :) So important that girls learn this too, not just boys! Also, a pro tip for putting Ikea furniture together - use wood glue - A LOT!!! It keeps it together much better with a stronger bond. In the wood dowel holes, the screw holes, along seams. So much better!!!

Thanks!! This video was great!! My advice as an Ikea Lover: You can also use PAX wardrobe frames, they have ones that aren't very deep and the series has many accessories you can change as your needs change. Pro tip: use wallpaper on the back of the structure for a custom look!

@@nancyr.fromla8640 you can do it! It’s time for KonMari and an excellent yard sale, where all the money you make you can use on the furniture or home appliances you REALLY want! I did this a couple years ago (and I didn’t even have a garage with stuff in it go clean out) and made over $500 with no big ticket items. I bought a Dyson vacuum with the money. I’ll come to your yard sale if you do it!
