DIY Hydroponics At Home

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Start your hydroponics journey with Gardenguru's DIY Raft Kit which is a 12 planter system and takes only 2 and a 1/2 square feet of your space. It’s easy to set up and also qualifies for a perfect DIY hydroponics at home.
This starter Raft kit is based on the hydroponics technique called Deep Water Culture (DWC). In this technique the plants float on a raft on top of a reservoir filled with hydroponic nutrient solution with just the plant roots touching the water.
Hydroponics Raft Kit can be used to grow all your green leafy vegetables like spinach, lettuce, amaranthus, dill and also herbs like coriander, basil, mint, oregano, thyme.. You don’t have to grow only vegetables, you can use this kit to grow some flowers and ornamental foliage plants too.
What you should avoid growing in this system are plants that need support, like tomatoes, beans, gourds, climbers/creepers and huge plants like brinjal and obviously, root crops.
Note: Transplant the seedlings into the system only when its roots can reach the nutrient solution in reservoir.

    My cheaper DIY: Take a plastic container w/ lid similar to above, take plastic cups and make holes in them, then make holes in the lid so the plastic cups can just fit. Buy a 50 bucks air pump for aquarium and a filter ... fit it inside container. For hydropnic solution i used jaggery + gram flour + vermicompost or watch any DIY KZread video. Seed are free. You can use rock wool to attach the seeds in, it can be purchased locally or online ... i use sponge with little bit of dirt. Spray and add little epsom salt to water as it contains Magnesium to allow chlorophyll formation. I make a very dilute solution and change solution once a week. Total cost 400 for me.

    I purchased your fast system and started experimenting. But the given instructions doesn't provide full details. How often do I need to change the water in the reservoir? After transferring the seedlings to the raft system, how long it takes for the lettuces/basil to fully grow? What level of after sales support do you provide?

    Ideally the water in managed based on EC and pH meters. In the absence of them, it is better to change the water every 10-15 days. There is no ideal duration. If the EC goes down, add nutrients. If the EC goes up, add plain water. Hope this helps

  • @TheGeekgardener

    Yes, you need to monitor pH and EC for any hydroponics system if we are expecting it to perform to its full potential. It really depends on what you need out of a system. Starter kits help understand the concept and help them get upto speed in Hydroponics. ROI comes with scale.

    @@TheGeekgardener how the ph meter quality you're selling at your store? The reviews is not very positive. Have you used PH test strips as alternative? Would you recommend that for beginner system? Also can I use this raft system indoor with regular led bulbs? If so how any and watts would it need?

  • @TheGeekgardener

    @TheGeekgardener

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@AmitavaSaha I have been using the pH meters that I sell for last 10 years ( not the same piece but same company). Very solid. That said, a pH meter is only as good as the care taken in maintaining it. pH strips are Ok if you are looking for a range of pH. For anyone who is serious about understanding or get into hydroponics, a pH and an EC meter is a very good investment. The problem with indoor hydroponics using regular LED bulbs is its hard to find out the spectrum provided by the light. You will get results but it also depends on the quality of the LED, Spectrum emitted by it, positioning above the plants and duration of lights and so on. Its hard to say in watts but you can go with 15-20 watts per sq.ft. Again, higher watts doesnt necessarily mean its good! Its the content of the light that matters.

    @@TheGeekgardener thanks for the detailed response! I have a TDS meter, can that be substitute of EC meter? Also, how long those nutritens will last?

  • @TheGeekgardener

    @TheGeekgardener

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@AmitavaSaha You can use a TDS meter. But I would always vote for a EC meter. TDS meters are essentially EC meters with a layer of approximation ( that converst EC into PPM using a standard conversion factor.(KCL or NACL) For e.g A 500 PPM solution can mean two different EC depending which standard your TDS meter is using. I always prefer EC meters. but if you have a TDS meter and dont want to buy another meter.. stick with it. Nutrients can store well if they are kept in a dry place away from light. We have had nutrients store for even a couple of years.

  • @TheGeekgardener

    This technique of growing is called hydroponics (soilless) farming. The produce grown from this is not harmful. Plants take up nutrients for their growth. They either get it from soil(if already rich or enriched using fertilizer/compost).In hydroponics, there is no soil media (that eliminates soil borne diseases and pests that may affect your crop;and this technique has many other advantages than that.) but other inert media like water,cocopeat,clay pebbles. Since the medium used for growing is inert, we supply plant food externally to it.
