I am so glad I watched this video. I got a new hood to replace the one that was probably installed when this house was built in 1963!!! It was totally gross. After un-installing my old hood, I found that it vented into the attic, which is illegal here. I was able to use an unused vent from a gas furnace that is about 1 1/2 ft. away. The gas furnace is gone, so this vent to the roof wasn't being used. Then, I had to install an outlet because the old hood was hardwired, but that wasn't too difficult. The hardest part was holding the hood up while I installed the screws. Unfortunately, the hood I got just had holes, not the keyholes like yours did, but I managed. I had to use a right-angle attachment for my DeWalt drill to drive a couple of the screws because they were way back under part of the metal where the lights are. Dumb design. Anyway, I am so damn proud of myself. I'm 65 years old and I did this all by myself ;-) Wish I could post before and after pix.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I think Instagram is a Smartphone thing. I don't have a Smartphone and can't seem to post on Instagram with my computer. Oh well. Take my word for it....it came out great.
This was a great refresher since I haven't had to do this for quite some time. However, I would have made it plain that I switched off the breaker or removed the fuse from the fusebox before I got into the electrical connections when removing the old exhaust fan for other people that are watching for the first time. Safety always comes first.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Believe me, they might say whatever but I have learn with your videos. God bless you and your family and business for the knowledge and patience to instruct us, blessings.
OMG...Consulting THE TUBE for installation vids on range hood installation and of course I stumbled upon you! I can't recall exactly what comment I made about you but I equated you too The bob Ross of videos because they were so calming. LOL Now I'm gonna watch the installation and get the joy of installation of under the cabinet range hoods cuz I bought one! Thanks again Jeff and this time I'm really gonna pay attention to the installation. But the Popsicle Stick Deck comment was TRULY A CLASSIC! BEST VIDS, ABSOLUTELY. Jude in NY
I have gained a lot of knowledge from your videos. Thank you.
Very detailed when replacing the range hood from start to finish. Awesome job brother!
Hi, thank you so much. I am trying to install a duct to the roof on a first floor town home kitchen. Trying to replace a hood that vents inside as opposed to the outside. Any inputs?

Let's do it this weekend.
Good job buddy! Way to give the tips!
Do you know if we can move the fan assembly to outside wall where vent is so the noise of fan is outside not in kitchen.
Hi, what I would like to know is how to wire the Hood Range when you don't already have a Wiring in Place? In order words creating a new Wiring, My new House didn't come with One, just came with a Outlet in the Cabinet above. Can I Just make a 3 Prong Outlet Plug-in Head From the Hood Range and Just Plug it in the Outlet already there? Or I Have to get behind the Outlet to Wire the Hood Range Directly to the Outlet Wires? Thanks.
Where did he get the extra long screwdriver bit for his drill? I need one!
I am removing a microwave and want to put in a ductless vent hood. Whirlpool specs require a 12" (30.5 cm) minimum cabinet depth. my cabinet is a 14". When installed the vent is at the top of the hood would be covered by my cabinet. Is this an issue or does it matter? Suggestions would be great because this is the same with all the ductless vent hoods I have found, my 14" cabinet is not the norm I have found.
I have a ductless but it does not suck in the steam or smoke. Can you tell me what I did wrong?
Thanks for the advice!

Good training. Thanks
I love your videos, thank you. I'm not that OMG you must only use a licensed electrician, type of guy, but... "shorting the breaker out to identify" is for sure, terrible practice. I love your videos, thank you.
Very helpful video! In my parents house, they have a rear venting under-cabinet hood like this, which needs to be replaced. However, we'd like to move it 2-3 inches to the left, so that the new Ikea cabinets will fit into the space on the right. Do you think this is doable by just making the hole in the wall a bit bigger? Or is it much more complicated than that with the ducting?
What if my old hood fan has the wiring on the opposite side?
This is one of the best most informative videos i've ever seen

where there's a will there's a way lol... all jokes aside, its not that hard to do. Just not with this type of hood vent unless you are also installing cabinets over the ceiling duct.
Hi Jeff, if you're looking for content, maybe do a video on replacing a hardwired hood with a microwave/hood? Admittedly, that's what I'm trying to do, so I have ulterior motives 🙂. As far as I can tell, the only really challenging part is taking the hardwired connection and turning it into a plugin socket. The only other thing on the circuit is some can lights, so I figure it should be able to handle any additional power draw; I hope. Anyway, keep up the great work!!

I have the original 1984 Nutone vent hood that was installed when my home was built. There are NO nasty odors in my kitchen. The only reasons I am replacing it is the motor went & 2 weeks later, the light. So, it is a MUST. I suggest you tell viewers to remove the bulb & turn off their electric before starting this project.

I'm replacing a 70s era 36" range hood/fan but want to put a 30" one in it's place. The fan vent is on the top. Is there a way to adapt the 30 " vent as it will be offset from where the current vent is?
@Grabfma040508
3 жыл бұрын
Did you ever complete the task ? I am in the same situation where my vent is a 1977 - 36 wide and want to replace it with a 30 wide .
No need to switch out a range hood every 10 years if give it a good semi-annual cleaning and replace the filters. If any grease and dirt accumulates, it will be in the ducting that runs out the wall or out the roof....not the hood. The only reasons to swap out the hood is if it is malfunctioning or you want it to match your new stove or decor. Forget the halogen light bulbs and replace with LED equivalent lamps that use a lot less energy and don't require any special handling. If you are familiar and comfortable with a very simple electrical hook-up, the existing wiring serviced the previous unit trouble free and there is no visible concerns with the wiring, you probably don't need the expense of an electrician.
All the extra screws were probably because the hood was rattling when the fan ran on high. I've seen than many times.
How about install a exhaust on the window?
Helpful
A microwave video would be helpful if you have an opportunity in the future. 😊
Nice I wanna change my hood fan.
Thanks
Seriously so many years in school/collegeuniversity, and then we don't even know how to do simple things in life and we need to watch 20 videos to find out that we need to pay at least 2 people. Why electricians cannot install hoods?So who do we need to call first?Joiner/carpenter,hood installer?My kitchen never had a hood so it is even worse trying to figure it out.We have a new kitchen but no hood,and we are renting.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

The ducting can be set up by anyone. When it comes time to actually install the hood an electrician should do it.
Have you done a video of replacing a range hood with a microwave?
Just let the fan running...until you cut the power from the breaker. Soo no power The taps you can use a flat screw driver and remove it without twisting the metal. Change the range hood Put led instead the old bulbs. Turn on the breaker. Check for air leaks. Job done! Also. Try to get a 2 fans range hood they are much better
My 42 in vent much heavy, will take more scews then just 4 screws...
Word of advise... safety glasses. Oh and power disconnect.

electrical connections only "zap" you when you form a circuit. IE... when two live wires touch each other or you form the circuit by touching the metal portion of both with your hand/a tool. This is why Jeff says to call an electrician though... If you had to ask that question you definitely shouldn't be messing with electrical connections.

you might say that hood fan/vent was totally SCREWED. Lets be real though... no way he called an electrician to do one connection. But probably better he didn't do that on camera.
@whiteknightcat

He didn't call him just to do the connection, but to verify the existing Romex was wired correctly into the panel, seeing as how everything else about the existing setup was jerry-rigged.
It’s easier if you haul the stove out of your way
You do not need to replace a hood fan every 10 years. Total over kill. Just keep the screen filter clean or replace it as needed. This guy is wrong to suggest replacing the entire hood. Very bad advice. He must change out his toilets every 10 years too.

I cheap hood fan is 30 bucks, and depending on what kind of cooking you do those lousy filters don't keep the oils from coating the entire inside of the fan assembly. If you change them every few years you pretty much eliminate the risk of fire. A lot easier to change than to clean the entire thing.
