Something to note: Keep in mind that I'm just a normal guy who loves cars. I'm not a trained mechanic, although my father was. If something interesting car wise comes up, I try to film it and upload it for entertainment and the "look at what I done" factor. Pat me on the back, or give me a "good game" pat on the butt. These videos are meant to inspire other DIYers. Working on cars can be dangerous, even life threatening, if the proper cautionary measurements aren't taken. You also run the risk of damaging your vehicle and or voiding your warranty. If for any reason you feel like the job is too big to handle, I would suggest consulting with a professional mechanic.

Shorten the height a bit, shave the tops and bottoms of the bell if you need to, cut a corner off, make it happen! Great idea to draw actually cold air. Factory air boxes work better than most people think.

I have a 2020 Elantra turbo, one big down fall is after you play around a bit you lose power do to heating, so I got a INjEN air intake that goes down near the Intercooler down in the grill, feels a lot better, not like there’s more power but holds the stock power really well, it’s a 6speed as well so you feel the difference, food for thought! 💭 best of luck dude!

It looks like you just need to take that corner down a bit, I would take a strait edge around it and drop that corner 3in at an angle to the opposite corner dropping only 1in. You could just cut faces of the prototype and use them as a Stencil for whatever material your going to work with. Starboard is also something to look into for strength and low weight. I live in Houston to and just settled on a k&n and stock filter, my car is still stock slow tho lol 1.4 with no tune bah humbug.

If you’re going to do this custom, I see a custom fog light insert with a cone filter behind it snaked up to the turbo a more efficient design to pull the coldest air possible.

Personally I could see that working similarly to how many other builds remove the headlight. Personally I wouldn't go this route in case I decided to run ducting to my brakes for auto cross racing(although I know Matt is going to be doing 1/4 mile). He also did say he wanted to keep the filter up higher because of potential flooding in his area

That's a great idea. I've seen that on ZZP's Sonic. Looks like they recently ditched that idea and just have a tube going to the fender well. As simple as that is it definitely works.

That's true and its definitely crossed my mind. My only issue with it being so low is it will limit days I can drive the car, and I plan to drive it a lot. When it rains, it'll stay parked, but I do plan on doing events such as drag week where the car will be driven well over 1k miles in all kinds of weather.

Hey man. This is really smart thinking. I'm doing something similar but for a Miata 1.6 (European small engines😅) NB2. Only comment I have which I'm gonna do is to make also the bottom from Carbon fibre. During my own research apparently the stock airboxes work very well then only problem is they actually act as heat soak boxes.. So if the whole thing is made of carbon you get cooler intake temps.Great video all the same..Cool tip, you can also now get SOLIDWORKS foe entrepreneurs, and its like 60dollars a year or something, and could be easier to use than sketch up...👍👌

Personally I see merit in the aftermarket CAI. I run the K&N Typhoon you pictured and what I would personally do is run with that design and seal it all in to where it pulls from the hole in the fender well. Similar to the ZZP CAI for the 1.4L, but a full box with the cone style filter instead of just a divider. You could further run a mesh over the hole to restrict some larger debris floating up into the fender well. I believe the inlet tube from the K&N can be separated from the divider. If you want I can go tear mine apart and give you the lowdown and possibly sketch it up. I'm on Cruzetalk and could send you the files/info there.

That would be awesome. I see merit in it as well. I personally dig the ZZP CIA. Realistically, how efficient the intercooler is makes a bigger difference in the air temps seen before it goes into the engine. An air to water setup with an ice water box would negate the need for an intake all together. But, this build isn't at that point yet because I'm still using the stock ECU. Part of the AIT is read from the MAF sensor. The ECU will pull timing based on what air temps it's seeing. My user name on CruzeTalk forum is Crewz. Feel free to send the measurements there. I'm on their FB group as well.

I've thought about that. My only issue is driving around when water get high and it sucking in water. It's happened before to a build I did back in the early 2000's. Dodge neon. Was driving at night and got caught in some high water. Well at least high enough that the engine sucked up water.

Matt, you should do a mock up to measure how many grams per second your original design could handle using a MAF sensor. My 1.4T stock can draw typically 120-140 g/sec during a hard pull. Maybe would be just as effective to use a used stock 1.4T filter. I personally think it could draw more air in the right conditions (bigger turbo etc).

@@cmattdabrat it it helps, here is project farm's video where he does air filter testing kzread.info/dash/bejne/pX5nro9-XdjMidI.html I'm pretty sure if you start measuring vacuum (barometric pressure sensor) already built into cruze's 1.4 MAF - you will be able to know the practical threshold for factory sizing. The opposite is true for exhaust. if your diameter is too small, back pressure will be the resultant (positive psi and exhaust will try and compress) on the intake side of the world if vacuum is developed because of too small of a diameter, the engine will behave like there is an air restriction and the actual air will heat up - which is counter intuitive for what you pump into your intercooler to provide maximum oxygen content. in your shoes, I would look at the inlet size at the turbo itself to lean on what the engineers considered as an appropriate orifice size. If you go slightly larger and as straight as possible, you should get the most appropriate results.

@@cmattdabrat great video- for my turbo cruze it suffers from heat soak between intercooler output and throttlebody. When the car is parked in the sun at work it takes forever to get a "non false" temperature reading from the boost / air temp sensor. It's unbelievable how many minutes the car has to run sluggish to cool it off. I have often thought of putting a fan system / heat sync on that stupid sensor for a timed period if say temperatures are 28deg C or greater. If i was hunting better performance, intercooler would be swapped way before cold air intake. Great video you suggested!

@@canadatransistor It wasn't a good decision for GM to place the intercooler between the AC condenser and radiator. Kinda defeats the purpose. Definitely have to get the car moving some air through those cores before it'll see cooler temps. With this car being the 1.8 NA variant, it gave me 122k miles of service with no issues, aside from a clutch change at 60k miles. Aside from that, I had no issues until I decide I want to push boost through it on a budget. lol, I've learned a lot in the process and it's motivating learning more and getting everyone's feedback.
