The way you're handling and storing your ram modules I'm not surprised you have so many broken modules. I'm surprised any work for you. If you just inspect them with a magnifier x30 (jewellers loop) you will probably find you have knocked off or cracked some of the critical tiny surface mount devices. Others will have just been zapped by static as I can't see you taking any anti-static precautions.

It makes sense to put flux and heat up the boards indeed, but it is unlikely to fix any board.

He attached a phone vibrator to the PCB holder. The micro-vibrations simulate bumping the IC with tweezers during the reflow.

You can also use your clothing iron I've tried with my broken 4gb stick and it worked I did the same method with my broken GTX 460

it's only a temporary fix though, you need to reball the gpu chip

@@daniellee6912 Wait, why temporary? Won't it be a permanent fix as long as the GPU doesn't heat up too much?

cleaning and reflowing solder joints how often does it succeed?

  • @SerenoOunce

RAM modules generate very little heat, and heatsinks are really just for aesthetics. Reflowing a RAM IC is a waste of time and very likely to just make things worse. This would work on the old XBOX 360's bc RAM was directly on the mainboard, thermal stress would crack the solder joints. Not an issue for a RAM module.

@SerenoOunce - He is correct. This is a waste of time and don't attempt this on a actual new stick's that are worth money. Send them to a professional to diagnose the problem instead of cooking all the memory ic's and rendering the entire stick junk when it could be as simple and 1 capacitor shorted to ground heating up that can be seen on a thermal cam, I just repaired 1 stick of CORSAIR 32GB DDR5 6400MHZ PLAT and if the customer did this crap before bringing it to me the whole thing would be destroyed and wasted.

Don't confuse him, it's liquid flux for SMD re-work - used with hot air re-work station for removing and re-mounting surface mounted components

It's flux, make sure you don't get a flux made with "acid" (those may damage the connections over time).
