DIY Herringbone Pattern Paver Patio Renovation | Home Improvement
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today on Modern Builds I'm updating an out of date patio made of mud-colored paver bricks and into a modern retreat with a black fence, cool garden beds, and grey pavers laid down in a herringbone pattern. This Makeover / Renovation was a ton of fun and a huge learning experience, thanks to Home Depot for sponsoring this video. To read my step-by-step blog article follow the link below.

I'm a landscape contractor, and this is the first time I've seen a DIY patio built close to professional install practices on KZread. There's a few things I would've done differently but in your climate this'll hold up for years. Nice job!

Yes? Would you also skip the one step where you use a wacker plate? Very professional. :(

I'm stuck on making the edge boards stick up, it would become a pool without proper drain and the baseboards on the fence would prevent proper drainage the same way. Am I incorrect here?

I would’ve put a layer of weed mat between the soil and the decorative rock in the planter beds. To prevent weeds and to help separate the rock from the soil so they don’t mix and ruin the clean look

Great video and awesome design I noticed something that you can clarify more. You mentioned sloping the patio so rain can runoff. From the video it looks like the perimeter boards extend above the pavers all the way around. If I'm correct on that, how will that impact runoff and is there any concern about puddling etc

Uh, you do know you are liable if the tree dies from cutting its roots, including any damages it may cause if it does crash down? Local laws vary, you are usually allowed to trim on your side but it's not without liability risks if something happens because of your actions...
@rchavez5056
4 жыл бұрын
@@ZeoCyberG With that being said the tree owner is liable for cracked foundation, and broken pipes on the neighbor's house.
@ZeoCyberG
4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the local laws... Not always the case but generally it can apply under Trespass and private nuisance theories and you may be able to lump attorney fees into reparations if that's the case... But it also depends on who can prove what... Video shows no damage from tree before its roots were cut... Previous patio wasn't done right and Neighbor is not required to cut anything on your side... So that only leaves what happens to the tree now for liability...

Painting the fence makes all the difference. The baseboard detail is very ingenious. It looks so good.
It looks great! I would give a second thought about those outside wood panels, not only are they a tripping hazard but also can cause a beautiful pond out of this patio with heavy rains - I think they would look cooler and be more practical sitting flush with the brick. I really love those snake plants surrounded by marble stones on black fence backsplash - looks great!

@MatthewMorse
4 жыл бұрын
Yep... My thoughts also. They should have been flush with the top of the pavers. If I saw right, he used 1x6 boards for this. He could have used 1x4 boards and they would most likely have sat flush and given a cleaner look that people wouldn't trip on and that wouldn't hold water and/or debris (imagine trying to get acorns and leaves off of that patio with those 1" raised edges).

Perfection. I love herringbone. Simple beauty.
Those wooden borders are going to prevent water for pouring away creating a pool in your nice hard worked patio bro. Either remove them or level the one at the lowest point to the brick height so the water can run away. Other than that nicely done. One final tip, wear knee pads next patio gig lol.

Thanks so much for the video. We are building a patio almost identical to this (seriously- herringbone pattern and all) off of our existing deck and against our house, so we were in need of some advice on grading the slope away from the house for drainage. Great work, hun. 👍🏻

Right! I couldn't believe he didn't use kneepads! My knees were aching just watching :)
nice job, I would've skipped using wood in direct contact with ground unless it is the special type of pressure treated board made for ground contact (which these arent) and used a separator btw the soil and stones but it looks really nice regardless! Tip: painting new pressure treated boards will cause the paint to flake after about a year or two, better to wait a season or two first or keep the boards in a shed to let them dry out first (the moisture from the pressure treatment needs to come out and get below 16% to not push the paint away).
U super gangsta for this kid ! A lot of labour ! I think the most important part is the pitch for where the water is going to go and the level of base for the patio then on with putting together the pavers. It’s a bit scary on how easy you made it look I kind of want to do that now ! But I’ll be watching this again to make it more of a realistic task
No weed barrier. Wood edges are like 1 good inch above pavers, I bet someone will trip on it. It hurt to see him working with out knee pads. Nice fun video.

@Prison Mike Personally I would use stone/concrete edges rather than wooden ones. Dig in the bottom half and have the top half come up to the level of the patio as to not have people tripping all over the place. Mind you, I'm in no way an expert or professional, my experience comes from putting down my own and family members' patios. So I suffix my advice with the message that it's always a good idea to ask a professional. I hope your current project goes well! 😃👍
