* The bedding stone we used under our pavers is called (Chip Stone) here in Massachusetts. It is a 3/8" and less, clean, crushed stone with no fine particles in it. It is also know as (HPB- High Performance Bedding) and also (PBS - Premium Bedding Stone).
- The main pavers used for this patio are manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Blu 60) and the color tone is called (Shale Grey).
- The border pavers are manufactured by (Uni-Lock). The style is called (Treo) and the color tone is called (Charcoal).
- The wall block used in this project is manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Semma) and the color tone is called (Shale Grey).
- The wall block cap is manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Architectural Cap) and the color tone is called (Onyx Black).

The open grade is very intriguing to me and makes a lot of sense but I've been laying stone for over 15 years with just crusher dust in Ontario and have never had issues. The patio me and my father laid when I was 16 at our house(almost 25 years ago) was still in great shape (no sink holes or heaving) when we sold the house last year, the only thing we did over the years was resand it a couple times.

I love the open grade base method. I used to use dense grade or (crusher run) with sand as my bedding material for about 6 years until 5 years ago when I switched to open grade base. I will never go back... I agree that you can do a great. long lasting install with the traditional method but there is no room for error. Especially in cold winter climates... The clean stone allows for such better drainage and keeps the pavers dry at all times, which is key for a long lasting install. ✌

We set our string line with a transit. Afterwords we set our pipes with the transit (roughly) the use that string line to measure of from to get them exact. Level to double check that it’s spot on. Love that you’re building on washed crush stone. New England is especially important to build a strong base that doesn’t retain water. We still do some on gravel and sand, but only in certain small applications.

Hey brother! Thanks for the honest feedback, I really appreciate that. This work is my passion and I have been watching KZread for a very long time. Not very many good Hardscaping channels on here, so I really wanted to start one and share the work I do, but also teach others as much as I can. So I try to make my videos detailed by taking people through all the steps of the installs. My earlier long form videos are not the greatest, it has taken a lot of practice and learning with the video editing to get the videos a bit better... I'm still learning a lot with every video I make. Just like I keep learning on every job I do in Hardscaping... It's all about growth in life! Congratulations on your company, keep up the hard work and stay motivated. You will do great! God bless and thanks again for the feedback! ✌

THANK YOU for covering the how to of leveling in the EXACT right detail. As a DIY wanna be, leveling was part that made me not want to try Pavers. In ANY deck install video you see how precise the leveling is, but hardly ANY DETAILS about how they physically place the levels. You showed EXACLTY how to lay the poles, HOW TO USE THE LEVELER, and showed ON CAMERA watching the leveler bubble. I felt the actual level of that patio with you in the level tools with each bubble measurement. YOU made leveling A LOT more clear to me as a dummy DIY. More LEVEL vids please and thank you!

Looking into to do my backyard exactly like this video. Had couple guys came over look at it. My house is on the little slope. Right now my deck is 20 years old. Planning on ripping that put. Your base prep method makes so much more sense as compared to the standard use of sand. I think the best industrial example would be the use of a very similar angular stone or gravel when bedding railroad tracks. That stone allows for the tracks to drain, doesn’t appear to compress, warp or heave over time. Keep the videos coming. You guys are very likable👍

  • @TheChristianHardscaper

Yes sir! The railroad tracks is prime example of this method. People comment about how this stone won’t hold up, and like you said, it holds up trains driving over it no problem. And the water draining right through it is the most important part, especially in freeze / thaw cycles.. thanks for the feedback and I’m glad you see the benefit of this method! ✌🏻

I've watched so many videos on patios, i want to do my own... but my brain just can't compute the whole leveling part, etc. As well as how he mentions good starting blocks so as to have limited cuts on the sides but it's a random patio so i don't get how they know it's going to be even with limited cuts once they get towards the end.

Thank you man I learned good stuff, on my backyard patio I used 4in crushed rocks and 1in sand. I believe instead of sand if I had used smaller grade crushed rock would have been better. Also I leveled all the area before laying the pavers, working in segments would have been better. And most importantly longer levelling pipes would have been a worthwhile investment. Good work.

Thank you, I love this method for pavers. Although, if you have a base material that has fines in it (sand / dust) than you may need to use sand for the bedding material. Simply because the fines will migrate into the chip stone. You can still use it, but you will need top remove all the existing bedding material, rake and compact the base material, then lay fabric, then spread the chip stone to prevent the materials from migrating together. How I do the base, there is fabric at the bottom, clean base stone, then clean bedding stone. So nothing will migrate and the crushed (angular) stone will lock together tight. 👌✌

Hey bro! Been awhile! Great job like always! I just did a first patio ever and very happy how it turned out! In the future, I would like to try your method using 3/4in stone for base and 1/4 in as screeding material! Metal pipes is a smart move as well! We used PVC. Still worked out great, but I feel like metal pipes are a better choice! Keep up great work dude!

Nice, congratulations man! The Open Grade base is key in my opinion and yes, the metal pipes hold up good and give nice straight / level screed. Thanks for the feedback! ✌

I bought a bad ass electric brick saw with a rimless blade for $100 dollars. It's far better than a cut off saw. The cut is way cleaner and it sprays water... We have had gas table saws before, but they don't touch the electric one. If you find one, snag it ASAP. It was a complete game changer for our business. We will never use a gas table saw again, but we still use our STIHL cut off a lot. The rimless blade is really where it's at. I'm pretty sure you can buy one for the Stihl saw.

Nice, those are pretty good for small straight cuts. But nothing will ever make me leave my Stihl cut off at home....LOL I love these saws. Never been a fan of table saws for pavers. ✌

@@TheChristianHardscaper I use both. I also keep my Stihl on me, but the table saw is so pro dude. You can speed through cuts.

@@TheChristianHardscaper It's super nice if you have jobs with hundreds or thousands of cuts. You'll be a fan of them if you ever have intricate walkways you have to lay. You'll save literal days of cutting. Imagine doing 500 cuts with that Stihl saw. Its an absolute nightmare and super taxing on the body.
