DIY Hardware Storage

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I can't stand having hardware just hanging out on my workbench, so I built this rolling hardware storage caddy to solve the problem. It tucks under my workbench and out of the way and is really flexible so I'll be able to adjust it as my needs change.

This is so, so cool! Was going to say mobile clamp rack but you beat me to it! Should do a Jay Bates French cleat drill rack on one side, that way you have all your hardware and drills in one spot. Great build April Wilkerson

That is sweet, I really like the idea of the roll around hardware caddy, being able to move it to the job instead of running back and forth like I so often end up doing, and then to be able to roll it out of the way when you are not using it is AWSOME. Good job and great video.

Hello April. Great job on the french cleat storage bin project. This will probably be the next addition to my organizing tasks at hand. I have many sustainers for all my large tools from Festool, its the little things that drive me insane when I cannot find them. Organization is the king of all rewarding projects. It makes all my other projects go so smooth. Great job and keep up the good work.

That's a brilliant use of french cleats. I'm going to be building a workshop space in about two months, and one of the first things I'll be doing is lining my walls with long cleats so that anything can be hung anywhere. I'm saving this video to remind me to make a hardware storage rack just like this, and I'll be able to grab a bin and stick it on the wall next to wherever I'm working. I've loved several of your videos, but I think this is one of the best.

April another amazingly clever idea for storage and as you kept with the French Cleat system it is totally changeable in the future, good job. Loved when you rolled it across the shop. Kimberly Johnson I lover her videos and think she is brilliant; however, she took designs created by men and made it out of wood and square (vs. rectangle and plastic). So I wouldn't get all "I am woman, hear me roar" just yet. Or maybe us men should just start comparing all of our work to that of women? You know, since sex seems to matter to you and all.

Several years ago I decided to make a storage cart for my leathercraft supplies. No longer doing that because of weakness in left arm. The cart is still good. Took a 4x8 pegboard, cut it into 4-4'x23 1/2" sections and used a 2x4's cut in half then split for all 4 sides. Added the panels to 3 walls and a piano hinge on the 4th one. Using 1x6 glued up to form the top, bottom, and 3 pull out shelves that I later covered with furniture leather. Tried a lazy Susan from Home Depot and it didn't like the weight. Bearings rolled around my craft room. Went with casters and added handles on the side opposite of the door. Some of the peg hooks would pop out so I ended up using small tie wraps on ALL of them. Pushing it out from the back and connecting on the inside meant that they were hidden and I cut off the excess. Looking at your cart, and the idea of the French Cleats. Would be an easy addition to my cart. Just using screws and washers. As an afterthought. I built it on a budget. Doing it over, I will be getting the metal pegboard. Currently, my hardware is in a stack of DeWalt storage boxes. Which I made a 4 wheeled dolly. They're all stacked. So to get to the bottom, ALL need to be pulled off. So far, 9 boxes. Will be removing one pegboard wall and screwing the 2 carts together for added stability.

Nice project, April. Safety tip: Never use both fences at the same time as you were at 2:47 in the video. If the work-piece turns slightly it will bind between the rip fence and the blade and come flying back at you with great force. Use an indexing block clamped at "your end" of the rip fence and feed the work with the crosscut fence only. Love your videos and your lovely personality. Cheers ! Roger Memphis

Great idea! I don't like many of the wall designs, but I haven't seen any floor stands that look good until this one. I have a BUNCH of MDF. I'm going to put a trash bag in the center to hold drops and shop trash. The plan is to put what I need on the cart and keep it by the projects. i know what I'm doing this weekend! Thanks April. Love the videos.

Great Job April, Building the system with free supplies is a good use of the materials. I was able to acquire a collection of the Acro brand of the bins with a metal and a Rubbermaid cart. My shop needed extra space to store supplies that I did not use every day so I acquired a Used truck trailer and started storing my parts in it. It is a Big Mistake to use open bins if the temp and the Humidity changes with the seasons. It actually rains in the trailer even though it is weather tight. I'm moving to Maui which will have the same issues so I've adapted my storage from open bins for anything but plastic items to Plastic screw-top jars (reused snack containers, Pretzels, nuts, candies, etc ; or prescription medicine Bottles for smaller items) {no I did not have to eat every snack I asked my friends to save them for me} Most of them are clear so sorting is easy and a benefit is that they keep the fasteners and other items free of any dust generated in the shop. I did not get rid of my bins I just use them to hold the jars. BTW I keep an eye out when hardware stores that sell bulk fasteners refresh their store displays. They sell them at a very deep discount and all they are is a little dirty. Keep up the good work and get some good dust collection for your shop. At a minimum get a shop air cleaner to clear the airborne dust and a good shop vac to pull the dust from the saws.

Great job April-thanks for posting. When I rip French cleat strips I just set the blade at 45° and adjust the rip fence width. The bottom edge will slope to the wall and I think it looks just as good as a 90° cut. And no small triangle strip scraps. =Brian=

Hi April! Great project. I love the concept. Im sure you learned the fickleness of MDF by now, too. One thing I would like to say is that you should be using solid wood or at least plywood for the french cleats. Mdf is very fragile when thin, especially on an edge. I will bet you will have to replace the cleats within a year. Before you paint them though, you can strengthen the mdf edge by applying a CA glue, thin type and let it soak into the cleat's edge. Then paint. That will help them to last longer. If a ca glue is too expensive, you can also use a good quality pva glue, weldbond, titebond, etc., to strengthen the edge by thinning it with water and brushing on the cleat. Allow that to soak in and harden. The difference will amaze you. You are by far one of the most creative woodworkers on youtube, and much better to look at than steve ramsey, or Carmichael, for sure! I look forward to seeing your skills increase, and love your projects... -Al

Well first can I say that your videos are FANTASTIC!! I'm looking to make me a shed/workshop soon, so these vids are great for ideas when it's built. I won't have too much space - 12 x 8 foot, but that's all that allows. So seeing that portable storage pod was absolutely inspiring. I've seen the French cleat idea with Steve Ramsey (like !!) and gonna be using it in my shop. Keep up the videos - I really like them, and you seem to be a natural in front of the camera and the explanations and processes are spot on. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to more to come. Well done April and much love from the UK. Good stuff !! Matt

I really like the idea, and you gave me an idea for what I can do when I stack my shop vac and my sawdust barrel. I'll just put French Cleat hangers on for my sanders, hand power planer, and all the accessories, Thanks!

Hi April...as usual, I've got a big smile on my face from watching your video. The "Get It Done Gal" strikes again with a well built fastener caddy. I love the cleat system which allows easy access for removing the bins. By the way...your doggie's cute too! Take care and can't wait for the next one!

Great build. I'm using your design to build my own. I think I'm going to make the base plate a little wider though as when those bottom bins start to fill up there's the potential for tipping if the cart is at all unbalanced. Adding 3 inches to each side of the base plate (and moving out the casters) will still keep the overall footprint smaller than the perimeter of the bins, but will help stabilize the caddy. Nice design April!

This is a fantastic utilization of space! I'm gearing up my mind for when I get home and start setting up my shop in my new house. I have the space already picked out and can't wait to get back to doing what I love. I am naturally a bit disorganized, and always looking for cleaner ways to run my business. This is definitely on the list for first things to build when I get back, if not for the whole system, at least for the French Cleat design and home made bins. From one DIY to another, thanks for the great idea! Keep on doin what you're doin :)
