DIY - 2014 Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDI: Diagnose and rebuild (repair) a dragging rear brake caliper

A few days after changing the rear rotors and pads, I noticed a temperature difference of 20 - 40 deg. C between the rear rotors. I investigated the issue and found the rear left caliper piston to be dragging due to rust from a pinched dust seal. After rebuilding the caliper with OE parts, the problem was gone and the car returned a nearly 10 % improvement in fuel consumption.
OE part codes:
- Caliper piston: 582351H000
- Caliper inner seal: 582321H300
- Caliper outer seal (dust seal): 582331H000
- Crush washers for the brake line banjo bolt (2 pcs): 1751210000

I had the same problem, sticking piston in rear right caliper. So far I have just lifted the piston dust cover and syringed some brake fluid under it and it has freed up nicely, but I will some day do a refurb and your great tutorial will make the job a lot easier. Thank you very much.

when bleeding the brake, it's easier to use ratcheting wrench, also you can do without one way valve if you run that clear hose UP from the bleeding screw before routing it down into collecting container. For clamping brake line, just use a piece of cloth and vise grips.

True, the alternatives you mentioned work just as well, especially if the more specialized tools (one-way valve, hose clamps etc.) are not available.

It doesn't sound like the ABS pump to me. The ABS pump has 4 channels (since there are 4 lines that go to each of the wheels), so it's unlikely that 2 of the channels broke simultaneously. On the other hand, as far as I remember (though this needs to be confirmed with a mechanic) the Kia Sportage has a diagonal braking system, where the front left & rear right form one circuit and the front right & rear left form the other. These are controlled by the brake master cylinder which is connected to the brake pedal. From what you're describing, it's more likely that the brake master cylinder has partially failed and it now only supplies hydraulic to one of the circuits. So I'd start my investigation from there. Also, the master cylinder should be much cheaper to replace than the ABS pump. Best of luck!

Where and how did you get your parts. I’m having an extremely difficult time locating

I used genuine parts from a Kia dealer, based on my vehicle's VIN number. They weren't very expensive, despite being genuine.

@@TheMissingBoltthank you! I’ve attempted calling my dealer asking for these parts but they have me a stupid quote. Tried another dealer and they acted like these parts were not an option. I hate to replace a caliper because the dealers are just wanting $$

Very detailed video thank you. Did you remove, check and clean the caliper slider bolts as these can get water in and seize leading to premature and uneven pad wear?

I did do the caliper bracket and slide pin clean-up in the rear brake installation video, namely here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YqKX2LmbfbjPd7Q.html

@@alexandruiftode8761 Multumesc foarte mult!
