    @@ChrisMaherDIY i think the way to do it is to make the rounded paper go all the way to the end, then trace out the 45° corner while it is in the slot. Then you can take it out and cut down the traced line while its flat. If you do this on both I believe it will connect perfectly, at least it does in my head! 😂

  • @ChrisMaherDIY

    @ChrisMaherDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@David-cz7mm In my experience i've seen that when you cut the govee leds, they still work but govee does not adjust the animations to factor in the missing pixels. What that means is if you have an animation where lets say the last 30 pixels should be red, if you cut the last 30 pixels off, govee will not adjust it to make the last pixels of what you have left red. You simply wont see the red anymore. So is it perfect? No, but does it still work, yes. Also if you solder or attach those 30 leds back on, then in my experience it will work perfect again. The other option which I have used in a few of my projects is just hooking up the govee led's to WLED and controlling them that way. Here is a video I made showing how to do that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmSntKlqh6TIoZM.html

    great informative video!, Question(s) 1. Since I’m using govee rgbic strips will I need to raise the roof of the paper to have it diffuse nicely to avoid hot spots? 2. Would you recommend using 2 pieces of stencil paper from hobby lobby to diffuse the lights instead of paper? I Appreciate your craftsmanship and editing in your videos, you’re very inspirational to thousands of people!

  • @ChrisMaherDIY

    @ChrisMaherDIY

    Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words! Govee led strips have 30 led's per meter vs the 60 that I normally use so i'm pretty sure you would have to raise the roof of the paper more to get a perfectly diffused look. I'm not sure how high but just experiment with it until it looks perfect and go from there. The stencil paper would probably look good and I think doubling it up would be perfect! The only bummer thing about the stencil paper vs the long roll of paper is that you will have some seems unless you can find a way to make them almost invisible!

    I wonder if you could get the rounded pieces to a 45 degree angle by drawing a top-down view of a 45 while it's in the groove, then take it out and cut on the line. I imagine it would produce a curve on the paper similar to a "straight" flightpath on a globe. Easier than trigonometry I suppose.

    Thanks buddy! In my experience i've seen that when you cut the govee leds, they still work but govee does not adjust the animations to factor in the missing pixels.

I thought about making a video but there are a ton of them already out there that do a great job showing how to get WLED onto the ESP8266 board and its pretty simple! As for powering things, it all depends on how bright you want it and how many LED's you have. For smaller projects, I can usually get away with using a standard 5v phone charger. For bigger projects I use this: amzn.to/3bfiXcZ to power the LED's! Hope that helps but please let me know if you have any other questions at all!

    Amazing vid, never knew this was possible. Just wanted to ask what other materials can be used for diffusing the light as an alternative to poster board? I’m looking for something that can last much longer on the wall than just paper. Cause unfortunately, Aluminum channels found online don't bleed to the sides like the govee glides do, and they don’t diffuse the light enough for individual leds to blend with the rest.

I've found that some stencil sheets provide some good diffuser qualities but the ones i've found that work were at some craft stores (hobby lobby) there are some on amazon but you have to have like 6 layers of them to make it look perfect and thats just too much work. The best acrylic i've found on amazon is this: Acrylic: amzn.to/3zyiUCL but if you go this rout you would need to have a little bit more space between the acrylic and the leds to achieve a perfect diffused look. Good luck buddy!

    Hey what's up Chris.. I am brand new to this and have started doing this project as a beginner. I noticed that the ESP board gets insanely hot so I have stopped for now. My question, I had a total of about 112 LED's, and doing the math that was provided on another youtube channel.. that amount of LED's calculated from the specifications on BTF amazon page where I bought them, shows that 112 LED's would need almost 10 amps? Is this correct? Asking because I bought the 5v 2amp charger that's in your description to power them, and wondering if I need more power to run these, and if that's the reason why the board is getting so hot. Not sure why the ESP board is so damn hot in places, it worried me a bit so I am buying a bigger power supply to see if that helps.

    Thanks for reaching out and great questions! I've never had a problem with mine heating up but I also usually have my brightness limiter set to 850 mA. I have not tested things out on what would happen if I turned that setting off and ran them at full brightness and full power but I'm curious now if things would over heat if I did. I might have to try that out here. I really never go by the actual power recommendation because in my experience that always seems to be overkill and calculates things based on max power and brightness which I never use. I'm more of a trial and error learner. I usually start with the least amount of power option and see how it looks and then go up from there if needed. But with that being said, the larger power supply cant hurt! Let me know if the larger power supply helps out!

    Govee claims you can’t cut their strips on Amazon . Any info?

  • @ChrisMaherDIY

    @ChrisMaherDIY

    You certainly can cut them and honestly you don't lose much functionality. Basically the govee app does not recognize that anything was cut off therefore all their animations will continue to run as if the entire strip is there. Would it be nice if the app would be able to recognize that the strip is shorter and adjust accordingly? Yes, but depending on what your using them for, they still work just fine. You can also connect them back together if you did end up cutting them and they will work perfect. Here is a video I found: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaKEj5uaqay4adI.html

    What's the color rendition index of the BTF LEDs?

  • @ChrisMaherDIY

    @ChrisMaherDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. is the color rendition the bgr, or rgb, or brg etc? Is that what you are wondering?

  • @Towelie-

    @Towelie-

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ChrisMaherDIY The color rendition index describes how close the colors are reproduced compared to natural light, it's usually a percentage from 0-100%, where an index of 95% is very decent. Usually cheaper LEDs have a poorer CRI and can make objects appear bluer or tinted in a different way. Light with high CRI looks better to the human eye and is especially important for studio environments.

    These are pretty delicate though, and may fall apart if its much longer, say 5m

    Yeah they definitly are delicate. They would get destroyed pretty quickly if you have kids running around and its in a place that can get bumped into. For this, I put it in a spot where it really wont get bumped at all so its holding up just fin! You cuold make it longer but would just need to secure it to the wall in more spots (i just used painters tape) lol.

    Amazing stuff. Thank you for helping us combat capitalism :) Working on a similar project but using a PVC wire duct to mount the LED strip in, and using a white paper tape (aka: painters tape/masking tape) to cover the duct and act as a diffuser. My concern is with heat dissipation, and also the impact on light discharge. Any ideas?

    Brilliant idea! I've never been too worried about heat dissipation but I'm also just making things for around my house that I don't have on all the time but maybe a thin strip of metal could act as a heat dissipator? You should make a video on putting it together! I'd love to see how it turns out!

    There is a way to get music sync working on these strips using WLED but I have not tried that yet so I honestly have no idea how that works. In the video, all that I have going is pre set animations using the WLED program. For the computer question, are you wanting to use them in the tower or just power them using a computer?

    @@izumirestrictedaccount4080 If your motherboard has a "ARGB" header you can plug ws2812b's to that header. You just have to make sure the number of led's you have don't surpass the max the motherboard can handle. If your motherboard doesn't have a "ARGB" header you can buy something like the "aquacomputer farbwerk 360" controller. it does up to 90 leds but can being customized quite a bit via it's software including pc sound reactive.
