@@kockjannie261 Ah! I always like to let flowers that need to open open first before I pop them in a cooler! Things like roses, garden roses, anemones, ranunculus, etc. For things that don't open, like astrantia, lisianthus, chocolate queen anne's lace, I put them in the cooler until I'm ready to design!

This is a SUPER helpful video! I have a few quick questions: 1, Would you say to have flowers delivered about 3 days before the wedding? 2, It looked like you didn't really strip any leaves off of the greenery before putting them in water. Is that right? Or do you strip greenery a certain amount as well to keep leaves out of water? 3, (This is the difficult question) What would you recommend if I want to do pictures and a small reception in one location (Utah) and then travel for a full blown ceremony, dinner, and large reception about 8 hours away (Colorado) two days later? Would that require me to do all my flowers twice, or would bouquets and the reception decorations last that long?

Thank you so much for your kind words and questions! 1. Yep, you need a day for the flowers to rehydrate, perk up, and begin to open. Then having two design days is nice! Additionally, it's nice to have a 'buffer' day in case there's a shipping delay or if something unexpectedly bites the dust it allows ample time for a replacement. 2. With greenery, you can be lazy and crowd it more. I do my best, but when you have a sea of flowers then giving the greens a fresh cut and popping them in the bucket is fine. 3. Honest truth, they might look a bit rough. When you design, transport, set up, break down, haul back, and then do it all again then it can be a lot like taking a ripe banana with you to work....you can only do it once. If you're working with hardier flowers then it will probably be fine, but they will only look the best the first go around. I wish I had better news for you with that, but after 14 years of being a florist, I've learned that wedding flowers are pretty much trashed by the end of the night. Flowers look the best right before they expire, which is why we ship them early and the flowers don't need to be in the cooler. Does that make sense?

Thank you so much for teaching us so much about flowers. I've found your videos and website resources really helpful! :) Just out of curiosity, what items for a wedding (bridal bouquet, centrepieces, boutonnieres, etc) can you create with that amount of flowers? I will be staying at a hotel 4 days before my wedding - there I will do all the prep work and flower arrangements, so I am asking just to have a rough idea of how much space I will need for one of your 'large package' of flowers :) Thank you, and keep doing these amazing tutorials!

You're so welcome! This was probably a medium. Building a large package in a hotel room would be rough. Maybe you can ask the hotel if you could use an unused meeting room to build your flowers in and then move them back to your room?

Is it alright if i receive flowers on a Friday morning for a Sunday wedding or is that not enough time for the flowers (particularly roses) to open up? Help!

Thank you for the kind words! You could receive your flowers on Friday but you'll want to make sure you're hydrating them and helping them open up before the Sunday wedding. You can use a hair dryer, (on it's cold/low setting) to help get your roses to open up a little bit!

I don't use floral food often. Only if a blooms is looking really sleepy and needs a hit of glucose and even then, I'm never really sure how much it helps. We well snips on our supply site, see link below. They've been really hard to get since the pandemic supply chain issues, so I think we have a different brand because we can't the Clause ones, but they still work great. My flowers are arriving tomorrow. On Thursday I need to transport them to our venue, where we will be assembling the arrangements. Should I leave them boxed until Thursday, or hydrate tomorrow, and carefully return to the box for transport (about 30 min) and then rehydrate? Hope that makes sense.

That totally makes sense! You definitely want to de-box and hydrate! They need to start perking up and opening. If they are left in the box and in their sleeve the trapped moisture will cause them to break down and possibly start shattering. Personally, I would crowd them in buckets of water to transport them. The greenery and carnations can go back in the box, but the other flowers can bruise by being stuffed back in the box.

I love your video. A few questions. What temperature should the flowers be stored at? I don't have room to put everything in the frig over night. I'm always afraid that everything will die. Also, I like to but ribbon on the bouquets night before wedding but I don't want everything to be wet from leaving in water all night. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your kind comment! Event flowers should be stored at room temp to look their best! The only flowers I put in the cooler would be anemones, astrantia, and blown peonies and ranunculus. I only do this if it's really hot outside because even throw my room is around 70 flowers seem to know it's hot as balls outside and don't last as long. Flowers look the best about 2 days before they expire, which is why you want those suckers out in room temp. =) For ribbon, I always have it cut but put them on when I had the bride her bouquet because you're right, it always gets wet in transit.

I'm so glad you found us! So were your containers clean, the house cool, or was it hot as balls outside? This summer was HARD on shipping those flowers so they could have gotten heat stressed. Normally, flowers should last way longer than 2 days so they may have been old or gotten zapped by the heat in transit.

Thank you for answering. The containers are clean. But my country is a very hot country (100 degrees in the afternoon). And since there is no florist for fresh flower in my area, i needed to go to the town which took me 2/3 hours to go there. But I made sure for full air conditioning the car just for the flowers. However after i designed the flowers, they wilt :( is it the best for me to store the bouquets in the refrigerator?

Personally, I don't use flower food, but some people like it! If you use it, just make sure you don't get it too concentrated, as I've burned my flowers that way. After you build your arrangements pop them back in water, or fill up the centerpiece vase to keep everything hydrated. =)

Thank you for all the great information! I do have a question I'm hoping you can help with. If I get my flowers on a Friday and my event is Saturday, does that give my roses/flowers enough time to rehydrate and open up if I make the bouquets Friday night?

Nope, they'll be tight. Also, if there is a shipping delay (which has happened more since the pandemic) then you'll be in full freak-out mode. Have your flowers delivered on Wednesday, or at the latest on Thursday to stay safe! XOXOXO, Amy

Thank you, Josie! We recommend a Wednesday delivery for a Saturday wedding. Day 1(when your flowers arrive) is prep day, Day 2-3 is design days, and Day 4 is the wedding day. On Day 4 you should delegate all floral transports.

Things like Astrantia, Anemones, Queen Anne's Lace, Ranunculus, Lisianthus can go in the fridge if it's super hot outside. Flower food definitely can help, but fresh water also works too! Flower food is formulated to cut down on the amount of bacteria that the flowers generate when they're underwater, so it will definitely help with the longevity of the stems.. but changing the water everyday works too!

How long can they sit in the bucket? If I have them delivered on Thursday, can I have them put together on Saturday?

Hi. Just wondering, if its for our daily flower bouquet orders, how long do we need to prep like this? Or is it okay to store it on our flower chiller and just prep it right before we make the bouquet arrangements?

You can go that route, the flowers will stay closed in the cooler and will last longer, but they will be tighter when you hand them off to the client. You definitely need to remove lower leaves and provide a fresh cut, but they can be tighter together in a cooler because you're delaying the opening.

Does the flower prep go the same for any store-bought/diy flowers? Also, I am traveling 5 hours to my wedding, should I prep my bouquets to be put sitting out in water or do they need to go in the fridge the day before I travel? Lastly, I'm assuming I need to get a bucket of water for flowers for when I arrive at my destination or is keeping them in a damp towel storage box okay? Thank you in advance! Hi Chelsea! So when it's from the store then they are probably already cut, hydrated, and the flowers have had a chance to blow out so I would just remove lower leaves and recut everything! You don't need to put your flowers in the fridge, but they need to be in water during transport especially when they are unwrapped. Wholesaler flowers are still 'green' and can handle the box, but store flowers have 'ripened' a bit so they need to be handled more delicately. Think of it like a banana. You take green ones home in a bag they are fine, you take a ripe one to work and it gets all dramatic and bruised within a few hours.

You can, but honestly, I skip it. I can't tell a difference, and if you get the food too concentrated it will burn your blooms. I do like Crowning Glory spray if it's hot weather or if I'm using a lot of foam.

If I get spray roses on Thursday for an event on Saturday - (1) after cutting them and putting them in a bucket, It is fine to leave them in my kitchen countertop? (2) I plan to do the arrangement Friday and put them in the fridge once done- is this ok? Lastly, since I’m using floral foam, is watering the foam Friday when I do the arrangements is sufficient or should I water it again Saturday (the day of the event) before transport? Leaving the spray roses out on your kitchen counter to open up after getting them in into water will be important in helping the roses open up so they are their most show-ready selves for the event, so this it totally fine! You can put your arrangements in the fridge but it's not necessary. Keeping them in a cool dark room, away from heating vents and bright sunny windows will work totally fine! We like soaking the foam for about 20-30 minutes fully before using. You'll want to ensure that the foam stays moist so the flowers keep drinking, so watering the foam again on Saturday before transporting is always a good idea. You can simply pour water through the flowers into the foam to make sure it's still saturated!

This is a great question! Whenever you start to crowd roses, or add extra bunches together, it slows down the process of them opening. Ideally, you want your roses to be their most show-ready selves for the wedding day. So giving them that extra space to breathe definitely helps! Spray roses can be grouped lightly, think 2 bunches per bucket.

Hello Maddie, great question! I typically remove the tubes, recut them, and place them in a vase by themselves. Store in a cool location. Orchids are pretty long-lasting but the lower buds die first so don't be surprised if you have to pinch off a few buds.

That's awesome, Erica! So Wednesday will be prep day, but you can get ahead by pulling all your bouquet recipes and popping them in their hydration video. You can also do bud vases and get a head start on greening out your centerpieces on Wednesday if you want, but you'll just need to check the waterline. Thursday you can officially get starting with building your designs. Start with the easiest things first! You can do your bouts, corsages, maids, etc. I like to save my bridal for Fridays and I typically do my cage foam work the day before, but I do rewet the cages that evening and the following morning! @@tynisekee8212 Yes, it drips a bit when you're strapping it on, and a smidge when you backfill with flowers. When I build it completely on the arch, I typically pop a towel below. It's not excessive and once in place, it doesn't drip though!

So planning my wedding on sep 10! and it’s alaska anchorage . How early can I place order and do u charge big time for shipping ?

We ship Alaska Cargo! It does cost a bit more, but it's overnight and the flowers are kept in a cooler. I'd recommend placing your order as soon as you can because the industry is still experiencing supply issues...basically, there are more weddings and half the blooms due to the pandemic. We can still get flowers but waiting increases substitutions because they are already spoken for if that makes sense.

If my wedding is Sunday, I received the flowers on Thursday, should I leave the cardboard around the rose over night or until the day I arrange my flowers? Or should I remove it after an hour?

Great question, Tammy! You always want to remove it after an hour. Longer isn't better because the flowers will start breaking down if left in the wrapping with the moisture and heat. We only leave it on for a hot minute so the heads will be supported while they are rehydrating! Thank you! XOXOXO

@@tammynguyen5765 Hello Tammy! It depends on a few factors, heat and water. If it's hot outside and the foam isn't submerged in a vase of water, like a cascade bouquet, then they will struggle-bus. If the weather is milder, then you can build it in foam the day before, rehydrate the foam with your kitchen sink sprayer the following day you should be good to go! If the flowers and foam are submerged then you'll be just fine!

Do you had a flower saver powder in the water? Or just plain water for the soak?

Nope, I prefer clean water and stems. Most florists aren't big believers in food. Maybe for an arrangement that you want to last for over a week, but it would still need to be changed every two days. Because event florals are turn and burn, food isn't needed. Also, if you don't get the ratio right then you can burn/damage your flowers if the concentration is too high....I've done that before.

No, not so much for event florals. If something looks a little travel tired I will use some floral food to give them a hit of glucose, and I've tried Quick Dip before but I don't seem to notice a difference. For me, changing out the water and giving the flowers a fresh snip seems more effective for longevity over water additives.

Wednesday for a Saturday wedding! You need a buffer day in case there's a shipping delay or something bites the dust in transit. If all goes perfectly, the first day will be for prep and organization, and then you'll have two design days.

Good morning! Please help...I am purchasing my flowers directly from a wholesaler. I bring them home 2-3 days prior to my event. I condition then and do everything I am supposed to do. My problem is, my flowers are drooping before I can use them! Today, the snapdragons I got on Thursday are droopy and wilted and my event is not until tomorrow! Please help!!

Sorry for the delay! Snaps can curve and lean towards the light so I will give them a fresh cut and set them upright in a corner so gravity doesn't continue to pull them downwards.

What size is this order? I’m about to book a large and wondering if I need to order two.

We were doing shoots so it was random amounts. Look at the “what you can make” to determine if the package is enough. Or, snag a Custom Design so a florist can build it out for you. ❤️❤️

This may have already been asked, but did you put the ranunculus in separate vases just because they are so delicate?

Yes! Since ranunculus are delicate you'll want to separate them from the rest of the flowers into their own individual vase.

On your supply list on the website, it says to pick up floral food. When do I add the floral food?

You can add the floral food to you buckets when you're filling them with water! You'll want the floral food to fully dissolve in the water before adding your stems, prep your buckets ahead of time before picking up your flowers, it'll make the process that much easier!

How do you store them of you don't have a huge flower fridge? Last time I tried putting hydrangeas in the water in front of a fan but nope. They hated me 🤣🤣

Floral shop flowers need a fridge because you want Mother's Day arrangements to last as long as possible. However, you don't want to do this with event flowers. Reason being, it's not the goal to make event flowers last 1.5 weeks, the goal is for them to look their very best at the event! The secret of flowers is they look the best a day or two before they up and die, LOL. So it's a timing game with event flowers, kinda like an avocado. You want those blooms to blow out and get all big and fatty so they are at their best for the wedding. Make sense?!?!?! XOXOXO, Ames

Did you order from us? If so, we need to change that date! They will probably make it to your event, but you will need to have them in a really cool room and change the water frequently.

Just some garden gloves with a leather palm to protect my hands. I also have grown to love plastic rose thorn strippers.

I thought we have to deep roses and then put them in the water .

hi i'm a florist with only 2 years experience (self taught but have watched your vids and many others, listen to podcast like mayesh) ... me and our other florsit who has 20 years experience are in HUGE disagreement about the importance of processing flowers, she thinks it's a waste of time and only need to remove foliage that would be in water and fresh cut..says i should just process flowers as i make arrangements. am i wrong? how can explain the importance of all this?

I've known florists who also just cut and jam everything in a bucket, leaving the wrapping on. My thought is the roses and blooms that need to open never have the opportunity to blow out, and this florist has a lot of loss because the moisture in the wrapping causes the blooms to break down. She does a lot of events and blows through the blooms so I think it's a time saver for her and she doesn't mind the high volume of waste. In the end, I think what works for some may not work for others. Personally, I don't like to see my profit go in the trash so I always tried to maximize my blooms. For DIY brides, they have trouble accepting that there will be loss, so I preach to them processing is key.

@@FlowerMoxie Thank you for fast response :) Yea we just a small studio that mainly did events pre covid but I built up our weekly orders in the last year (getting a min of 10 max 20 a week) We just had 3 weddings last weekend... i've never thrown out so many flowers and greens bc of that exact reason. She's says we don't have time to wrap gerbers and no need to until we use them. She just joined our team(of just me and owner who is not a florist) she says they don't teach processing flowers in flowers in school and since we aren't a store front our cooler doesn't need to look nice. It made working very difficult last weekend and no I spending more time cleaning up the mess, trying to salvage the greens. I think because we have such small amount of orders that cutting down on waste is even more important, and also if we have to process each stem as we make arrangements why not just spend 4 hours at beginning of week to process them all?

@@julessb Yep, I agree. I'd rather spend a few hours the day I get my flowers (when I have time) than taking forever to whip out a centerpiece or bouquet. When it comes time to building designs I like to breeze through them and focus on my design rather than prepping each bud/green as I go. I am self-taught, as well, so all of my advice is what has worked for me over the past 13 years. I've experimented with different approaches and go back to this.

@@FlowerMoxie I guess everybody's process of processing it's different hehe i'll just have to keep doing it the way I've done it has worked for me in the last two years and show her the benefit. i've also had customers tell me their flowers have lasted the longest out of everyone else is a border from which I think is huge for customer return. thanks for your responses and all of your amazing videos :) I am the head florist at Pretty Things Vancouver in case we ever cross paths in real life or social media :)

are the stems supposed to touch the end of the vase? if i leave it floating is it ok or too much pressure on the flowers?

To ensure that the the stems are continuously in water, it's a good practice to have the stems touch the bottom of the vase or bucket. To make sure that your blooms are getting the support they need we recommend a simple cylinder vase or mason jar for shorter stemmed delicate blooms, a 1.5 gallon bucket for medium sized stems and a 2.5 gallon bucket for longer stemmed flowers and greenery!

There are, but personally, I don't care for them. I just put on garden gloves and run my hand down the stem to remove the leaves and most thorns pop off. I really just remove the thorns on bouquet roses, and if they don't come off when I strip the leaves then I snip the tips off with my shears or use my thumb to pop them off. The metal thorn strippers are like teeth and they tear up the stem and can introduce bacteria. The plastic one, for me, are tough to work with. I hope that helps!

You can use Flower Food! Flower Food cuts down on the amount of bacteria that the stems generate when they're under water which helps with stem longevity! Also, keeping your flowers away from bright sunny windows and heating vents helps too! You can also use Crowning Glory spray to help with flower hydration.

I cut away what I know that I will not need. If I'm doing taller installs or urns, I'll leave them the length that I need. I do like to at least cut about 2'' off to cut away the oxidized portion of the stem. 💓

What temp is the water, my daughter has me doing it.. hydrangeas.. help please. Need to keep 2 days.

Just tap water! Cut the stem in half so there's more surface area! If the heads feel like they are 'soggy' then turn them upside down in the bucket and soak them in the water for 30 minutes- 1 hour, gently shake off the excess, recut and give them a day to bounce back.

I would do that for my more sensitive and delicate ones, but greenery, carnations, and cushion/daisies/poms will be fine in a cool room! Remember to turn your fridge to the warmest setting and bag up your fruits/veg because they release a gas that can damage the blooms.

@@FlowerMoxie the fridge is empty..just for flowers i have a thermometer inside a 4 degree celsius. i got 50 roses i just put them in the water with the box like u said loll with a fresh cut... now i will go oit and remove the box :-) thank you for your quick reply!!! i got 50 tulips and 75 daffodils :-) these im used to work with them... 1st wedding... am not a florist just a back yard garden.. my friend is getting married tomorrow. montreal canada here so still a bit cold

Hmmmm, not sure which item you are referring to. Everything I unwrapped was standard bunches from a professional wholesaler. Many items are sold in a bunch with a specific stem count, for instance, roses are 25 stems, ranunculus 10 stems, garden roses 12 stems per bunch....but greenery is sold as a 'growers bunch' which is more done by weight so it really varies. I hope that helps!

Hello Cassie! I took a look at the photo you sent and roses do have guard petals, even spray roses, so you do want to pluck those fellas off. I completely agree that there were some outside white petals that had brown specs, but as a florist, I'm not stressing because I know those are the 'protective' petals that should be removed. I'm really glad you reached out and I understand that 'being your own florist' for the week can feel stressful so it's good to ask questions and send photos. Unprocessed blooms have to be worked and 'jushed'. Naturally, if something bites the dust we are happy to refund or replace if possible, like we did with your delphinium that did not like the trip. =) XO, Amy
