I’m so impressed with your counters & the courage it takes to do a DIY project like this. I picture lots of those brown/black granite countertops changing over into a more updated look at a very reasonable cost.

Wanda, that means a lot to me. Thank you so much!!
I'm doing it! My counters were already painted when I moved in 20 years ago, and I painted solid colours 2x since then, but now I'm doing this! I already primed and painted the base white. This weekend I'll give it the sponge bath and veining, and squeeze in the top paint and finally polycrylic after work during next week. Very excited to give my kitchen the brightness and pop that it needs. Thank you!

Michele, I'm so glad you think so. Thank you!
You have done an EXCELLENT job! You may recall I mentioned last week that I have real marble countertops and you captured the essence of the marble so well! Adding the “milky” finish over the top was exactly what it needed to take it from amazing to perfect! And then the matte poly…even better to achieve the honed look. I am so impressed with your outcome and this tutorial. I will be sharing it with friends! I feel this was far less daunting than epoxy, I’m certain less odiferous, and a very affordable solution. Do keep us updated on how they wear as the year/years go by. That is always so helpful when doing research on a project you want to try to undertake. I love your green cabinets as well!

Oh my goodness!! Beautiful job! I'm redoing my kitchen & I've been wanting a diy method of veining. I've been looking at an ivybridge color of granite with deep emerald veining but just can't justify spending that kind of money when I'm sure I would drop our cast iron skillets on it!!😊 This is great. TY for your tips & expertise. God bless!

Going to be doing the veining on my counters tomorrow, thanks for the awesome tutorial! I just finished painting all our kitchen cabinets, almost went with the colour you used but we decided to go a bluer tone called Knoxville Gray by Benjamin Moore. The people who owned our house before us painted the counter tops a black with gravel texture in it. It held up awful and I hated it 😫so excited to make our kitchen our own!
@AdventuresinDecorating

That is so exciting!! I know that they are going to look fabulous, especially paired with your beautiful Knoxville Gray cabinets. Good luck!!
I work with paint and sealants alot. I refinish furniture for people. I use polycrylic on all light color refinishes i do. But never thought about using it on a countertop. Not sure how it would hold up. Have you done a follow up?

I have an old 70 yellow laminate countertop. Watching your video has inspired me to paint my countertop. What primer, paint and coating did you use originally for painting your countertop? Also is it scratch resistant?
Just followed this tutorial and loveeeee the look of my new countertops! Thank you SO much for sharing. Question: what products do you use to clean your countertops?

Hi Megan, thank you so much! I pretty much just use water OR a little bit of dish soap.
It looks so good but what did you use for the white paint underneath? Is it regular paint? I'm trying to do this and trying to do it just like this
One more question, what kind of paints do you use?

ya I would never use poly. I used epoxy and its the only way to go…. getting ready to do my current house. I used poly on my floors and I cant scrub them and it doesnt hold up at all.
@AdventuresinDecorating
3 күн бұрын
We went the epoxy route (Stonechat Countertops), as well. Unfortunately, the gases in the epoxy caused the counters to yellow over time (I ignored all of the reviews of other people warning others of the same outcome). I'm so glad I was able to redo them with polycyclic. They haven't ambered at ALL; are easy to clean and have held up really well. 🙂
This looks great. How is it holding up? How long did it take you in time to do this in total? Do you get water or food stains on this?
Hi Becca, absolutely beautiful! I'm doing your method on my bath countertop. Did you use the same color for all the stippling and what colors did you use for the veining? Did you mix any colors together? I appreciate your help!

Yay ... that's awesome! How's the project going? The green is SW Pewter Green.
Can u do this method over laminate countertops?
They are beautiful. Very nice job. What was your base countertop? I have a solid surface like Corian. Does it work just as well on that? Also would love to know how they are holding up and any advice on maintenance and use of them, ie hot pans, cuts, chips etc...
@AdventuresinDecorating
11 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Our base is granite. I'm happy to report they are holding up really well, and, admittedly, I never place hot pans on them directly (I always place them on hot pads, trivets, etc).
This is a good video. I use polycrylic for everything else. I can't believe it never came to me to use it on counterparts. Here is one thing to note about the real world application of Polycrylic, which never gets mentioned in tutorial videos. It takes a long time to cure and become protective. Within the first week it will feel dry and ready for normal usage. However if you rest anything on it, often times an impression gets left behind. If takes months before it can take a knock and not chip away. It's pretty tough when it gets to that point. it just takes time to get there.
@AdventuresinDecorating
10 ай бұрын
Thank you! After the epoxy yellowed after about one year when I first painted the countertops years ago, I was so frustrated that there wasn't SOMEthing that wouldn't turn yellow. I can't tell you how excited I was when realizing that I could use polyCRYLIC! And, yes, so true about the curing time. This was such an easy method, that I'll happily touch up any little scratches, dings, etc., that might happen as time goes on.
@leanchasersx

@AdventuresinDecorating yeah, I love that it's easy to just sand a little and another layer of top coat.

I love the look of these counters but I’m really scared to try them on my counters. Do you think I could undo this project of it went south?
@AdventuresinDecorating
Жыл бұрын
KATIE, if, by chance, you see this, PLEASE forgive me for not seeing your note until now. Did you paint your counters yet? If you haven't, don't be scared. Aside from making sure you prep your surface properly, there is no wrong way to create your veining. it's going to be beautiful! And, YES, if it goes south, just paint over it and start again.
I don't know what epoxy you used originally but have read that if you use a heat gun or torch to knock down the bubbles that eventually that delayed reaction is what causes the yellowing down the road. I'm reluctant to use the polycrylic due to the streaking you mentioned (i think a foam roller will be better) but also not having the same durability as epoxy. thoughts?
@AdventuresinDecorating
7 ай бұрын
Hey there! Unfortunately, no matter the method (heat torch or not), epoxy, mixed with white, is going to yellow over time (in my experience). Now, if you're going with darker colors, epoxy is amazing! I've been pleasantly surprised with the polyCRYLIC and have heard that I can use a heat gun to eliminate the streaks when it's drying. I'm going to remember that for next time.
What grit sandpaper did you use with the hand sander?

Hi! Knock on wood ... they're holding up really well!! To be honest ... even when we had our original granite (before I painted over it), I would never prepare food directly on it (always use a cutting board) or place hot items (always use a pad), soooooo, I can't really attest to the polycrylic's "durability" in that manner.
Hi Becca! The countertops turned out beautiful!!! I can imagine everytime you walk into your kitchen you just have to smile at the beautiful results!
