DIY Fantasy Floating Castle Lamp Recycling TRASH
Hi, this is a "best out of waste" video where I show you how I made a fantasy floating castle lamp recycling some cardboard from an old box, egg cartons, pizza boxes, toilet paper tubes and three plastic bottles. The only bought materials I used are the colors, the hot glue and the P.V.A. glue. It took me about seven days to finish, including the drying time. This is a creative way to teach children about recycling and also stimulate their imagination.
I started by tearing some egg boxes in smaller irregular pieces that would help me build the stones under my floating castle. I glue them together in a triangular shape.
Then I make some paper clay from a few pieces of cardboard. It is really easy and cheap to make because we only use two ingredients: cardboard and P.V.A. glue (polyvinyl acetate glue, commonly referred to as wood glue, white glue, carpenter's glue, school glue, Elmer's glue in the US). I used an old blender to make it really smooth. I tear the cardboard to pieces and place them in the blender. I add hot water over the cardboard pieces and start the blender. When it looks like a homogeneous mix I squeeze the water out trough a sieve. You should squeeze as much water as you can. I then add the glue. I used about three tablespoons of P.V.A. glue in the mix you saw, but you should add one spoon at a time and mix it to see if it has the consistency you want, and keep adding glue until the paste is the way you want it to be.
I cover the egg cartons with the paper clay and let it dry. I now have the base for my castle. I cut three plastic bottles of different sizes and heights to make the towers. I also used some paper towels cardboard tube and toilet paper cardboard tube for extra towers. You can use all kinds of cardboard tubes thinner or larger to get a cool effect. I made the cone roofs using some thicker paper. I drew some circles and cut them in half. This is the easiest way I know to make cones. I also drew the door and windows for the castle. Considering it will be a lamp you may want to draw a lot of windows bigger and smaller, don't be afraid to play with the sizes and shapes. I covered the castle walls with paper clay. For the roof tiles I used pizza boxes. I cut small pieces and glued them from the bottom of the roof working my way up.
I painted the whole thing in acrylics. It really is up to you how you paint your piece. After it was dry I made some holes to insert the LED string lights in the towers. I also made two little blocks of cardboard on the back so the castle will appear to be floating without touching the wall. It is a really cool effect.

Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What clay do you use? I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create 2. The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need 3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay? Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects. 4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks? You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question 5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations? I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay 6. What brand of paper clay do you use? I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY 7. I was born 60+ years ago. We didn't have left handed scissors available to us at that time. Also, I am more ambidextrous than a "true" leftie like my brother was. The other 8 kids were strictly right handed.

That is a beautiful piece. Great use of egg carton for the rock. I confiscated my wife's old blender to make my own paper clay. Never used cardboard, though. I soak newspaper to remove as much ink as possible, then blend. I save the water after straining to blend more paper. Saves on the water bill, a little. I think I will try cardboard soon for clay. Thanks.
