Just a little info for ANYONE saying they can't do this. #1, I am 49 and never once have I ever stepped foot into a Joann fabric store before, #2 after watching this video I went and got materials, to give it a try. I got home, and we have one of those teeny tiny little purple and white sewing machines, I have never even plugged one of those in before. I watched another video on how to use that darn thing, after a while getting the string ran through 17 places you can't see with a microscope, I freehand drew the same pattern Mimi showed, I was making 4 masks, so I cut out the pattern, and made all the patterns on the backside of the materials, cut them all out and started putting the 1st one together. Fed the 3/4 elastic though the sides, 3/4 was all the store had.. and I am hear to tell you, it came out really good. My wife is an RN and an educator for nursing, she was super impressed when she got home and seen it. Now, I will say this, make 1 at a time, I messed up and cut out all of them at once to get that part over with, the pattern I drew was a perfect fit for my wife, it is too small for my melon so I will be making bigger ones. Awesome video, thank you very much Mimi. Everyone stay safe and have a great day!!

I want to say thank you, one for the free pattern and two for motivating me to get behind a sewing machine again. I grew up with my parents owning 3 garment factories and 3 clothing stores, all in Manhattan and the Bronx. As a child, I used to sit with all our employees and look at what they were doing. I sat with pressers, sewers on single needle and double needle machines, merrow machines, button hole machines, and others. We had all types of attachments and lots of specialty equipment. We specialized in party dresses for little girls, sizes ranging up to 14. My mom never wanted me to learn to sew, she used to yell at me when she'd see me sitting and sewing. This was over 30 years ago... And you motivated me to pull out my old machine from the attic and get to making masks. Thanks Mimi G... Good luck to you and your family.

A suggestion I read was to make the inside a plain fabric, leaving the printed pattern on one side only. The reason was if the mask is taken off it’s very clear inside versus outside. Prevents the person from putting it on and having the contaminated outside against the face.

To anyone who's having an issue with the nose part fitting I ended up using a paperclip to bend into a nose bridge shape (I couldnt find wire) and put it inside the mask to hold it down. This also helped stop my glasses from fogging up as much :) I wrapped duct tape around the ends of the wire and used a lighter to smooth it out to keep the rough ends from ripping the fabric. Thank you so much for the printable! It has made life SO much easier.

But, I do have a needle and thread and my husband owned ONE cotton/linen shirt (rest are woven polo shirts or t-shirts) and I had tennis shoes with shoelaces. I have a silhouette cameo so I downloaded it to my desktop, then merged into the canvas. I then released compound, traced and detached and have a perfect cut pattern. For the insert I erased the part not needed, inserted it into the top/outside and reduced measurement. I'm doing 2 insert layers for extra protection. This sure helped on cutting and as needed I can up-size/down-size pattern according to face size. Thanks Mimi for another great and easy free pattern and lesson.

Thanks for such a simple tutorial! I found my old sewing machine at my parents house and made 50 rudimentary face masks but I wasn't entirely satisfied with the design. I spent a ton of time looking for videos that gave straight forward directions and also had a link with measured dimensions. (I don't have a printer.) Yours is by far the best I've seen yet. I had two yards of fabric and cut out enough material to make 21 masks! I've been donating to different businesses around my neighborhood and I hope to keep donating to essential workers. Also, I was at Joann's Fabrics picking up some fabric when I overhead one of the employees say "Can you believe some woman walked in her saying we're not an essential business? Does she not realized that everyone and anyone with a sewing machine is making masks?"

Exactly the reason you stated is the reason to make and wear one! When you have to do essential shopping and you need to remind yourself to keep your social distance and not touch your face. When things were looking ominous more than a week ago I put a small spray bottle of alcohol in the car and I use it to spray the supermarket cart handle and anywhere I might touch. For years I have been conscious of the fact that you pick up colds and the flu from the supermarket. Mimi G keeps it ‘fashionable’.

Amazing, I got a 20€ sewing machine, the one that looks like a toy, and I didn't expect my first try to actually yield a usable mask but it actually came out great! Excellent fit, does not gape at the sides like some of the straight pleated masks. I recommend this to any sewing novice, and thank you for providing the pattern too ! I'm amazed at how well and snug this fits onto my face. For ties I cut off the ribbons off a top, the ones that are sewed inside the shoulders to secure them onto hangers. Glad to have found a use for those things !

Joanns sent out an email with a video as well where they use interfacing but it’s a pleated mask that resembles the disposable ones. I made some for my family and a couple for my neighbors. I also added pipe cleaners for them to be able to adjust to their noses.

Mimi hi hope you are well! Tgank you so much. I bought my sewing machine 5 years ago becsuse of you and made 2 items. This was the BEST diy. I'm a bit rusty but practice makes perfect. I made one for my 78 year old mom because the 3ply do not really seal. Plus this is more comfortable than loops around ears. As soon as I find more fabric I plan to make more. Thank You❤. Oh my printer was down so I printed the pattern at the FEDEx store.

Also making a bunch for our local hospital - the NICU unit where my cousin works does not need N-95's, so these are perfect to get them through this crisis when supplies are short. Bless you!

Love this pattern, especially after trying several other patterns. This pattern has great coverage on the face, no need for a nose wire, no need for pleats. The only adjustment I had to make was often people needed at least 27+ inches for the elastic or they felt it was too tight (bigger heads and big hair etc to account for)

Those N95 masks are very scaring looking. The cloth ones can be sewn in many wonderful quilting cottons that can be cheery for the HCW and patient. Yes we know its not the real thing but with the crises in reusing and extending the masks, this can be a game changer. It can be the fairy wings to extend the life of the N95, Lets be positive. many years ago, people thought the brother where stupid to invent the flying machine. In this case the supersonic needs it fairly wings to keep going.

Excellent! The only thing I would add is a steel 18 cage wire sowed into the mask to sit on the bridge of the nose. Then, just need to pinch it to follow the natural nose bridge curve for even a tighter fit. And, wear safety construction shattering eye glasses for full face protection. It should also be washed daily with a mixture of bleach and water (1-9 = 1oz of bleach + 9oz of warm/hot water for 10oz of fuild. Wash for a few minutes by hands and rinse with hot water and hang it to let it dry). Just my thoughts!

Quick Tip: when pinning, try to only pin in the perimeter 1/4" of the fabric so that you do not put pin holes in the part of the fabric that is meant to keep out the microscopic virus. Your face mask looks great. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • @heatherfyffe3618

    @heatherfyffe3618

    4 жыл бұрын

Honestly it doesn't make much difference. The fabric already has holes in the weave that the microscopic virus can get through. Masks are intended to block droplets that the virus tends to attach to, not free-floating viruses. Once a garment is finished, pin holes tend to disappear. For instance, when it's washed, the weave re-tightens around the pinhole. Otherwise, all of our homemade garments and accessories would be full of pinholes all the time. But even if your particular fabric holds on to those pinholes, they are not going to make enough of a difference in the functioning of the mask to be worth being concerned about.

The measurement for the fashion fabric pattern piece is 6.5" from the top point to the bottom edge and 6" from the widest curve of the mask to the side.for the side casing, that measures 1" from the side edge. On the facing pattern piece, from the top point to the bottom edge 6.5" and from the widest curve of the mask to the side 4.5"

I am soooo glad I found you!!! Being quarantined and bored at home, I started looking at so many videos on making face masks. I thought, hmmm🤔 that looks like fun and fairly easy. Not knowing anything about sewing, I took the plunge and invested in a sewing machine.😁 I received it last week, but had no idea what to do with it.😩 I kind of figured it out by watching a beginners tutorial on the beginner sewing machine I had purchased. I felt a little more confident, just a little .... my material kept bunching up at the beginning and the bottom bobbin thread kept getting tight, ugh! I started to get a little frustrated.😖 Anyway, when it came to start sewing the masks (following a tutorial) I was all thumbs. It was much more difficult than I thought.😳 All these ladies made it seem so easy.😫 I almost gave up, but didn’t. Then I found you.🙌🏼 Thank goodness! I will definitely look into your free classes so I can do this. Thank you so much for this tutorial and for your free classes.👍 Stay healthy and safe😷 Wish me luck.🙏

Thank you. Glad I found it here. I couldn't believe that Mybluprint added your video but won't let you have the pattern without a paying for a current membership! I am appalled that they would do that at a time like this. Thank you for putting this video up and for your willingness to share the pattern freely.
