.
. Distillation is the process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation method.
In this TACtivity, we create our own distillation set-up using plastic bottles and a straw to extract propanol mixed with water.

I have a question. Won't the chemicals used in making the plastic bottles contaminate the product of this distillation process?
@ThinkTac
Жыл бұрын
Hopefully not... The temperatures here are well below 100C, and much lower than the melting temp of the plastic, and so there should not be any leaching of the plastic material into the mixture being distilled...

if i were you id use a masonjar with a metal straw stuck in the top instead of this bottle idea, the bottle is nice for simple alcohols but definitely not paint thinner, that is just not, youd need to know every single detail of the plastic incase it reacts with anything in the paint thinner, especially the DCM, i wouldnt use this bottle idea unless i needed simply what is decribed or if you wanted to brew stronger alcohol at a party as a "cool chemistry trick", but thats about it, even water could start to warp the plastic at high enough temperatures and if the plastic isnt strong enough, and when things get warped bonds are being broken stretched whatever, chemicals are being released into your product making it impure.

Just use the tip of a hot glue gun for the holes. Much easier. You then use fishtank silicone or rtv gasket sealer. I would also use glass jars instead of plastic which can leach chemicals into your oils. Other that that, I live it!!

Great idea! Been looking for a way to make my own oils from flowers, since I don't own a still, I'm happy I saw this. But I got a question....the plastic bottle that sits in boiling water, how does it not melt?
@ThinkTac
2 жыл бұрын
Boiling water (~100C) is not enough to melt a plastic bottle. An open flame (several hundred degrees celsius) will melt it. Plastic used in plastic bottles has a melting point of about 250C.
Cant you melt a straw sized hole with a cone tipped wood burner? My mom did it before
Amazing
I guess I just don't get it. What is the ingredient propranolol for and was the water added to the 3rd bottle just to weigh it down? I was looking up how to get essential oils from plants and found this.
@ThinkTac
Жыл бұрын
Yes, by '3rd bottle' if you mean the standing 1L bottle, then yes, water is poured in it so that it's weighed down and can act as some sort of a stand. The bottle through which the straw is placed is also filled with (cold) water, and that's to help cool down the distillate faster so that it condenses faster.
Thank you you just helped me save 100$

I tried this method and after the first smell of dark smoke I was super excited, but thins got thick when my kitchen caught on fire. but I was so worried about the contamination of the glue and the methods on how to fill the bottles up with a cap full of water.....it did not dawn on me that the window was open. year don't try this method at home when you are totally and completely HIGH!

I'm just wondering...would it be okay to add metal bb size pellets into a dry distillation ? Would it make things start alittle faster or would it just contaminate ?
@ThinkTac
3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure, sir, about dry distillation, where I'm assuming you are trying to distil solids, requiring much higher temperatures etc. Are you asking if metal pellets can by dry distilled? If they are metal, then by definition they are made of a single material (the specific metal element), so there's nothing to separate/distil it from. If you meant something else, please let me know. In our simple TACtivity, meant for schoolchildren, we are performing a classic liquid/solution distillation, which can separate say salt from water (and you preserve the water), or as shown here, propanol (more volatile than water) from water.
can this be used for the synthesis of GABA to GHB ? Im thinking about making moonshine mainly but if it has other purposes that would be awsome
@ThinkTac
2 жыл бұрын
GABA to GHB is done via the Sandmeyer Process. I doubt that's a distillation process. In any case, these activities are for children to observe classic concepts in science, not to conduct dangerous or illegal experiments. Making moonshine doesn't sound like a good plan either. Please restrict the use of these activities for educational purposes only; we'll be able to answer your queries in that case.

how long can it take to destill for example 1L 20% wine? do i need to Change the water ?
@ThinkTac
2 жыл бұрын
Wine has 12% alcohol, on average. So 1 litre, which is 20% wine, will have about 2.4% alcohol. Distilling such a small amount may be a challenge, but we'd love to know if you were successful. Should take 15-20 min or so, but we'd like to hear from you what you observed.
Very well displayed good job. But the plastic is not good.. and this is for my science project and the teacher are strictly not allowed plastic. Is there any other way I can do?
@ThinkTac
2 жыл бұрын
Since one likes to see the distillation, a transparent container is recommended. That can be glass. But you can't bend and break glass. Hence plastic. All the plastic used here is trash; stuff that would generally be thrown. Better to use it for an experiment that to throw it in the trash. If one has no intention of seeing the droplets etc, any suitably shaped metal or ceramic utensils/containers can also be used

Essential oils can also be extracted the same way, using distillation. But because essential oils may be embedded in substances that have more than 2 liquids, one may need to use fractional distillation methods sometimes...

You would need more complex fractional distillation setups to extract natural/essential oils from their sources. But you can start with this and see how far you get!
thanks for the demo, but so much seems unnecessary and proponol??? I looked it up natural stuff in aloe. why would you even need that? why not just use the condensation directly and let it drip into the receiving container. Why an extra step (middle bottle)?
@ThinkTac
Жыл бұрын
Propanol is being distilled out, since it is more volatile than water. That's what distillation means: having 2 liquids of different boiling points, and separating them. It is NOT water that we are condensing and collecting, but the propanol or acetone as the case might be. The middle bottle is there just as support, to keep the condensing bottle in place. You may use any other support instead. We have a neater setup here that you can try: www.tactivity.in/CP35/EN/V12
Also I keep reading to use glass instead but how can you cut a hole in glass.

Distilled water is the pure water part that's extracted from any mixture of liquids or solutions. In miscible liquids, the more volatile liquid gets distilled and condensed first. In a solution, the solvent gets distilled, while the solute remains in the container

Better not to use plastic. Plastic has way too low a melting point. Use a glass straw too, not a plastic one, it will work way better. Be EXTREMELY careful heating glass bottles as heat can cause problems with the glass causing it to weaken and smash. There are ways around this, if you're curious look them up.

It's in a water bath, which has a maximum temp of 100C. That's not enough to melt regular plastic bottle plastic. It may deform a bit, but won't melt. If it's directly put on a heating element, it will melt. Hence we place it in a water bath. And we are distilling a material that has a lower boiling point than water, so the water bath needs to be only 70-80C. If you try this experiment, you'll know it works safely.

How about the temperature?
this video is directed at kids probably under the age of 13, its viewers and commentors are people looking to distill paint thinner to extract the dichloromethane which is a good solvent, other people trying to make moonshine?!? if anyone knows anything about chemistry, you can barely keep water in a damn plastic bottle without it absorbing BPA's and things that cause health problems, let alone distilling crude alcohol in plastic?!? i love drugs, i love chemistry, they go hand in hand, ive wanted a way to get my hands on some pure DCM, BUT IM NOT TRYING TO BURN MY FUCKING HOUSE DOWN FOR IT!?!? im 17 i know im not the brightest blub in the box actually i am, but really come on? its fucking plastic? take a lighter to it and it melts and gets stuck to your hand and now you have to wear plastic as your skin for a week or so till it comes off and leaves a burn/hole, you cant distill hot alcohols even water, its going to warp the plastic, alcohol would actually be better than water because of the boiling temperature, but you cant, i mean you can and people definitely will by showing of this video but you just shouldnt? its not cautious, isopropanol is fine, ethanol is fine, methanol maybe even fine, acetone probably not depending on the type of plastic, DCM from paint thinner, probably most definitely not it doesnt even sound like something that should be done outside of proper labware and somewhere where it wont catch fire easily, i just cant emphesize it enough, everyone in these comments is the reason drug prohibition exists and its truly sad.
