In this episode we'll be building two DIY desks. The first is an extremely simple DIY Woodworking project, that anybody can tackle with a limited set of tools. The second can also be built using only a few tools, but is more challenging as it incorporates more complex angles and geometry, covers building drawer boxes, tapering legs, and more woodworking techniques.

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. kzread.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Absolutely amazing. I have been doing woodworking for about 1.5 years so still learning a lot. I discovered your videos about 3 or 4 months ago. Gotta say not only are your designs with angles, hits of colour and small details better than anything else I have watched. Your videos are so good. You both have character and flare which makes me actually laugh. I have now watched your entire catalogue of videos and am going to try to "copy" your modern TV stand. Thanks Chris. Keep up the best woodworking videos on KZread.

  • @FireAngelOfLondon

It does depend upon where you live and how much time you have to look for it, but I get a lot of good lumber for free. In my current stock I have oak, beech, birch, walnut, plywood of various kinds and an unidentified but very tough hardwood. I also have some good birch plywood sheets that I bought. I live in Notting Hill, London, and there are places locally where people frequently dump old or broken furniture. I go past regularly and take a look, and most of the time I take nothing home as what people dump is usually real junk, too damaged to be useful. However there are enough occasions when I get great quality wood to make it worth walking by those places regularly just to see what is there. At the moment I don't bother because I have no room to store any more. If you live in a city or a reasonable sized town there are usually such places, all you have to do is find them, then turn up with a screwdriver in your pocket to disassemble stuff. I have made and sold furniture made from wood that cost me nothing but the time it took to fetch it. I hope you can find some time to see if such places exist near where you live. Even in the countryside some people do have such a place nearby, though your chances increase dramatically if you live in a town or city.

Great video and top notch production values, as always! I’m looking forward to building a couple of these (the 2nd style) for my kids and with their help! Quick question: I don’t see the privacy panel in the layout of the pieces at 7:10. Seems like it would be the same width as the apron, right? What height would you suggest? Also is it helpful for stability or is it just for the look? Thanks, and keep the great content coming! Your videos are excellent resources for anyone trying to learn and improve our skills and understanding of the process.

Hey David. Yeah, privacy panel is the same width as the stretchers. As for stability, it might make it slightly less prone to racking...but it isn't needed. So I'd consider it optional. Height, again, doesn't really matter, I'd just cut it to what ever your visual preference is.

First, this was a really great instruction on the tapered legs - I was able to replicate them using your sled method. I'm a long time watcher but this is the first time I've tried to replicate one of your builds and it's going great so far! I have a couple more questions though: 1) I'm realizing your cut chart doesn't include the privacy panel (and thus I have no plywood left for it out of my 8x4 sheet). Is it necessary from a strength perspective, in your opinion, or just a 'privacy' perspective? 2) Do you have details on the drawer slides you used? Thank you very much!

@@MrTwodogs56 so it's been holding up just fine with the pocket holes into the desktop to keep it stable. I definitely can feel extra "twist" that wouldn't be there with the privacy panel giving extra cross bracing but I won't be letting anyone stand on mine so I'm not worried about it at this point. Easy to add in afterward if I end up finding it too weak. Just thought I'd give my experience

Great video Keith. So how is the MFT table shaping up? I saw you did a follow up video but when I went to watch it had been deleted. Is it available on your Patreon channel?

@20:00 was the silence a mistake?? Usually there's music played while displaying the beauty shots, and the first bit of your outro is muted... Great build as usual. Funny how things were at that point in our lives.

Actually...that sander and dust collector are pretty pricey. I'm a big proponent of spending a lot on a good sanding system though. Nothing gets used more time during a given project. But you could do it with any sander I suppose :)

Those are great ideas for desks, Chris. I don't need one at this time but I appreciate the video anyway. Where do you buy Baltic birch in 4x8 sheets? My suppliers only sell 5x5 sheets. Stay safe. Bill

@ChrisSalomone Even though you said in this video that you want as many people as possible to participate, and the rules are loose, build a desk and use some wood etc ROCKLER just told me on Facebook that I could not enter because I am Australian. Bummed dude! I have an excellent project in mind :(

Hit up a dedicated lumber yard or builder's supply store. The big box places don't stock this stuff. You can order it from a bunch of different places bujt shipping is pretty pricy.

Great job! I see that you buy a new Festool impact? What you can say about it? It’s really good stuff, than you previous hikoki? In many reviews people says that it’s not so good, than Milwaukee, Dewalt or Makita and it’s your choice only if you already have a Festool cordless tool series.

I find it kinda interesting that you're using the terms "rip" and "cross" cut with plywood, as it doesn't *really* have a grain. Are you referring to the grain of the show side, or just "ripping" down the long direction and "crossing" the short? Or both?

  • @Foureyes.Furniture
