DIY Deck (Part 10): Why you should avoid Joist Tape on Azek or PVC deck?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is #Azek Deck series on bitumen rubberized asphalt based Joist tape, there are some potential problems on this product for PVC deck such as Wolf and Azek. But without joist tape, how can I prevent wood from rotting and mold on low level deck? The answer is good ventilation under the deck. I will show you how I did that. Then, I continued to work on the project by finishing up the bridge. Hope this has some good information if you are planning to build a deck yourself. I hope I can inspire more people to DIY. I am NOT affiliated with any of these products, companies or people, I just want to share my experience as a serious DIYer and try to help other DIY people out there. Please give it a thumbs up and SUBSCRIBE to support me!

I used the asphalt tape, and was lazy not getting around to putting the boards (Trex) on for another three weeks. It's just tape, the glue gets absorbed into the wood and what you have is a poly film "floating" on the joists. It does not really stick that well after a few days unless you stretched it out like a car wrap (if you used new wood with a higher moisture content, both tape types WILL bubble without constant pressure.) If you stick it to a finished surface it will stain and dis-color, but so do butyl tapes. IMO the best thing is to apply an oil based sealer to the lumber before you install. I tried this planning to re-use some of my old decks studs with a gallon of mis-tinted sealer for 5 bucks and it was by far the BEST and cheapest solution. Watching taped (butyl and asphalt) and oil stained boards all interact with a few rains and hot sunny days made it pretty clear to me. The deck frame itself looked like a patched quilt with the project leftovers from friends plus what I bought new, but it's all covered in the end. I think you can use the asphalt tape and and the video thumbnail is very misleading, the butyl stuff is better, but in hindsight I would have skipped all of it and just used the wood sealer. YMMV

Well done well planned out good use of space fantastic work I’m finding it hard to believe it’s DIY you have more experience than you let on I’m using the azek deck right now And it’s a pain in the butt temperature variance fastener problems the cost the hidden fasteners are expensive the screws and clips are now special order everything is pneumatic but well done very nice can’t wait to see the finished product

What kind of problem are you having? The Azek boards do expand and contact, but if you or your contractor used the right fasteners and/or screws, there shouldn't be any issue. Yes, those are expensive I have to agree but I didn't use pneumatic one. This is the 2nd winter my deck has been going through the harsh Canadian winter, I don't really have any problems. The only thing I see is the miter joins on the corners, they have a huge gap but that is expected, in summer time that gap will become very small.

They make 3 different types of joist tape all with different "self sealing" adhesives the cheapest of them being modified bitumen/rubberized asphalt. There are also butyl adhesive backed joist flashing tapes and lastly acrylic adhesive backed tapes. I use trex butyl backed joist tape for cellular PVC decking and the rubberized asphalt for every other decking type (cedar, redwood, green treat and PWC. Awesome job on the deck though.

For the fascia part, you can totally install it with construction glue and screws. BUT you have to bead individual 45 degrees glue lines so the water or humidity that may build up flows and drips down. Even when screwing there will be a micro gap caused by the glue material. Also, make sure you don't put screws too close to each other unless they are installed above or below.

At 4:00 into the video, you mention 4 reasons that cause rot. One major reason is deck board fasteners that drill down into the joists. The damaged capillaries in the wood of the joist wick water down into the screw hole and elsewhere into the wood. You want to keep water out of all those screw holes. That is really what joist tape is all about, keeping water out of those holes. You will see joist tape advertised as being self-sealing. That is important. You want to buy tape that seals around the holes that the screws put into the tape. The joist tape is also good for putting a membrane between AC2 wood and galvanized metal plate connectors, like Simpson Strong-Tie. AC2 wood is supposed to be more corrosive on deck fasteners compared to the previous pressure treated wood, ACQ.

I think the warning about this product was misinterpreted. It states don't use this product on soft wood or flexible PVC. There are two key words here "on" and "flexible." It should NOT be used ON FLEXIBLE PVC. The reason for this is the adherence of the product won't work very well. It needs to be used ON a rigid surface such as pressure treated floor joists. The adhesion side of the tape is warning NOT to put it on a FLEXIBLE PVC base. The other side of the tape which has no adhesive property will be ok with all types of decking material.

I totally understand what you meant, I had exact the same question too. But the risk is way too big for me and for many the DIYers, that's why I emailed Azek customer support on the warranty. The potential problem is that, if 2 chemicals are incompatible and they are only being separated by the vinyl backing (no adhesive), that's still a risk when that layer breaks down. If we can totally avoid asphalt/bitumen based product on Azek, we should do that. As some of the other comments mentioned already, Timbertech PRO-Tac (bought Azek) has the Butyl based product, it maybe a better choice.

@@DIYable If you use G-Tape™ you won't have any concerns about material incompatibility. Plus G-Tape™ is much easier to apply and adheres around the edge of the joists. Many of the other joist tapes out there will lift up especially in hot weather.

For people who want further clarification on the Azek official email replied in the video, Quote "The warranty will not be voided but may be nullified if an issue is in direct result of the use of the tape product" end quote. This means if there are some manufacturer defects, for example color fading or staining, it is still under warranty even you have joist tape installed. However, if your deck boards becomes brittle and having signs of cracks, then you file the claim. After they send someone to investigate and confirm it's joist tape causing the issue, warranty is not covered.

I think you're reading too much into the instructions. Little of the adhesive would contact the PVC and it probably wouldn't affect it much anyway. It's a bigger deal with flashing vinyl windows where it may cause the adhesive to fail. I'm not sure why adhesive is needed at all except to make it a bit easier and to better seal the fastener penetrations. You could lay strips of any waterproof material over the joists. Once your fasteners are in and boards down, the joist covering isn't going anywhere.

You aren't applying the tape "directly to" the decking. It is applied to the joists. They don't want to give you the "sure, go ahead", they aren't crazy. This is really bad advice. Please take more time to simply read your tape instructions in the future. In regards to using your tape with PVC, it clearly says you shouldn't use it *"directly on"* PVC. That does not apply to *beneath* deck boards as every deck builder knows. Your panic is unreasonable. Your advice to "DO NOT USE" is just wrong. These tapes are widely used with a proven track record if you had just taken the time to learn a bit before you attempt to teach. Of course Azek has no wish to warrant other manufacturer's products on big expensive decks. That is only natural and their response is not at all relevant as you said.
