+bigdaddymak1439 Okay, I KNOW I'm playing into your humor in all the wrong way, but I thnik it's a dewalt, lol.

Easiest way to check for short to ground without fancy tools is to unplug the PCM then run a wire from the relevant terminal through a 12v21w bulb to battery positive. If the bulb lights bright you have a short to ground. Leave the ign off. You can leave this hooked up while you are moving wires around to see if it flashes on and off. Because the sensor normally runs from 12v this will not harm it. If the light is on and goes off when you disconnect the sensor the fault is in the sensor. Hope this helps. I like your methodical approach rather than just replacing the part indicated by the code. :)

Love your channel and the knowledge you share. To do a visual inspection only takes a few seconds, often times you can accomplish this faster than you can boot up a scanner or oscilloscope. In fact almost every service manual will tell you to start with a visual inspection. You may just find a wire rubbing against a crank pulley. I have fixed MANY vehicles with a visual inspection that took less than 10 seconds. Simpleton? No, I like to call it efficient. If my flashlight and eyes don't see anything during a 10 second visual inspection, that's when diagnosis begins. Anyhow keep up the good work and spreading the knowledge. Congrats on the promotion.

+Auto Fix Pal It is more a matter of logic and reason than practicality. Doing a visual inspection that requires removing splash shields, lifting car, And really having no idea what you're targeting seems ridiculous to me. At least now I know what to look for exactly. Also you have no baseline. On ANY car you will find SOMETHING. But there is no scientific baseline to determine what you found was the cause and had effect as an independent variable. Any way you look at it, starting a visual without foundation is always unscientific by definition. This channel is about scientific approach and procedure.

+Schrodingers Box AFP is right. We had a car that wouldn't start and it come up with crank sensor fault. After visual inspection we found out that crank sensor securing bolt was loose. 5min diagnosis.

+Schrodingers Box not suggesting that you start removing covers or parts. But i quick look under the hood with a flash light can often lead you in the correct direction. You stated Not all vehicles will show cranking RPM on the tachometer, YES this is true. But yet it was worth the time to check because it took no effort and can lead you in the correct direction. You can't always trust scan data either, it's slow and its processed. The best way to really see what's going on is with an oscilloscope scope. Scan data is especially slow when your monitoring more than one PID at a time.

+rhkips Yeah you know me Kips- I won't call the PCM unless I can confirm there is no possibility a short to ground on the power is causing this. We have seen before where PCM shuts off a sensor circuit in such an event until the DTC is cleared.

+Schrodingers Box Yes, my cooling fan did not come on and the fuse in the fuse box had no power. It turned out to be the cooling fan relay and connector was burned. New relay and connector wire by the radiator solved that problem.

To rule out a quick short to ground from the power feed without unplugging the CKP 'B', cut that wire and see if you have 12v from the PCM. You could also run a 12v source to that circuit from another as a temporary fix if the cost of the PCM is not within the customers budget. Love your video's and keep them coming.

I just had a similar problem with a crank sensor on an Astro Van. It had intermittent power at the sensor. It turned out to be a bad ignition switch.

thanks! i recently put in a NEW (but bad) CKP sensor and its apparently shorted internally- screwing up my fuel level gauge, ignition coil/ignitor(?) and setting off a host of other selonoids- et al! I cleaned all grounds, rebuilt my fuse box, new ECU, cleaned everything........no changes UNTIL i just now decided to swap back in the old CKP sensor. All the electrical clicking, etc went away immediately and Im not going thru the KEY RELEARN process for the new ECU

Hey Shrodinger, What do you like best - hall, variable reluctance, or optical? What do you see in the real world, in terms of reliability?

quick test cut the wire and see if the 12 volts returns cheers sandy or alternatively disconnect multiplug at pcm and do continuity check

Checking amperage on the power feed would be a good way to check if it was a short to ground with resistance, pulling the 12v to ground. If no amperage, I would check continuity to ground with a test light hooked to 12v, and if not found, one "Fix" for this old gal would be to run an external 12v regulator or piggyback off the sensor A feed. Would be a bit of a hack fix, but on a 16 year old GM that's puking antifreeze and oil, not the worst thing.

I suppose one could use a resistant way to check with a DVOM to see if the power would be found if the PCM was unpinned and you went to a different ground. Yes, I think that's a way to confirm if it's the PCM or a short. Wow. You got my thinking bro. and I think I thought of the next test to see where this is going. Awesome! :)

been watching a lot of your videos recently - nice job whilst i respect your methods and knowledge i do wonder if really modern cars with "non standard" OBD communications systems would prevent you doing a lot of what you do....?? by modern you could consider the BMW F10 chassis ......... keep up the good work !!

Yes, that would be valid bypass if you suspected lack of feed to a sensor.

I have a 12 honda insight hybrid i just replaced the engine and now i have no rpm signal, spark or injector pulse. Swaped out crank and cam sensor. Still no change. I checked grounds and connections the crank and cam run off the same wire. How do i test this with my dmm does it create its own voltage?

WHy did you change the cam AND crank sensors? What was your data indicated both were faulty? That is really unlikely. I would start there.

Would it be possible to run a test light from battery ground to the 12V pin on the pcm you suspect is bad? If there's light, than it's good would be my suspicion. (Assuming the circuit carries current...)

check for low water level and then check for intermittent failure of the coolant level sensor.

what about unplugging the PCM and do a continuity test between sensor B and engine ground?

hello sir,i am watching your videos and far since i have seen, you are very good in what are you doing,and thats a good thing.Now,i send you this message because i have a problem whit emissions in my car and its a little bit strange for me to understand,maybe you could advice me.So i have a vw passat 2001 1.6liter engine(alz code) and on the emissions test its fail because of the high carbon monoxyde(CO),but the hydrocarbons are below limit,both oxygen sensors are working properly,except the fact that the downstream sensor its not stable,ok this tell me that i have a bad cat but then why on idle all emissions are good and when the engine rev up to2400 rpm the CO became higher ?if it is a bad cat then even on idle this value of CO should be high?lambda coeficient its 1.01 the car acting normal,no bad mileage no strange noises from engine,all good except the emissions...

Yes, just did a crankshaft sensor in my Ford 5 Speed! Crank, no start! Much information on web is misleading. Many sensors in my Ford, but the crank sensor was located in the bell housing in the clutch/ Transmission. Unscrewed mine and the old one was half melted. Replaced it and engine restarted!

+Schrodingers Box I used a multimeter set to AC Volts and probed the 2 wires. While cranking the engine I should have got .5 to 1 Volts, but nothing showed. I then unscrewed the nut, pryed the sensor out and it was half melted.

+Schrodingers Box After much frustration because I am not an expert on cars I learned that when a car cranks and does not start it has to be either; not getting fuel, or not getting spark. I was getting fuel, but not any spark. I then tested the coil pack wires. The center wire is power and the left wire handles 2 cylinders & the right handles 2 cylinders. I probed the the center power wire with a multimeter to see if the coil pack was getting power. Yes it had power! Then I tested if the left & right coil pack wires was getting a signal and I used a small led test bulb that I got from R. S. No signal and that led me to test the crankshaft sensor wires. No signal.

I hope you show this. My father's '98 has the same problem. I read that removing the starter was necessary. Interesting video.

+Shawn P Yeah there is no way to even probe the sensor without removing the starter. But remember this is a hall effect sensor. The sensor must be backprobed and then starter reinstalled to crank vehicle to test it. AIn't nobody got time fo dat!

Just think - they either have to be along the flywheel or along a synchronizer. Just look there

If you repair a short to ground and still don't have power to sensor B, How about jumping the A sensor power to the B sensor instead of buying a PCM?

HELP' 2003 Honda Accord 4cyl. I got a check engine light P0341 that i need to clear. It sounds like a lawnmower when i start it and the RPM drops and dies out. I changed the spark plugs and coils with new ones and It cleared the 4 codes it had that were P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 HELP?

I need the data you got that you suspected a secondary ingitionj issue. How did you determine the plugs where the likely problem. Was resistance test done on the secondary otherwise? Whats your fuel trim indicating under load? There is no data to work from here.

We connected a code reader and got all the codes. 5 codes it had that were P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0341 We seen it was a misfire so we replaced the plugs and coils. i cleared the codes and now we only have a P0341 showing. it says its a Camshaft Sensor. Thanks

Normally I just do a CKPS or CPS bypass and the one that works validates the bad component. Simple as pie!!

Good one for u or Anyone who knows there shit.. 2000 Ford focus see zetec engine egr tube, into the cat.. how do I get it off, no space for tools to break the bolt free. I seen two bolts hold as one on a guy's car and he couldn't do anything but break it, I need it as I'm doing the cat not the egr.. help Anyone ?? ??

If the PCM does turn out to have a bad output, and you don't find a root cause, could you just inject 12v into that circuit from some other source?

+Paul Howard Good idea however I believe this design uses the delta in voltage from the source vs the PCM to read the sensor. If the PCM does not see the 12V then it cannot work. In other words it compares signal to the 12V source- it does not just look at signal. Not 100% sure though. Good thinking though!

What scanner did you use when you showed engine speed,crank and cam signal ? Do you still use it today?

It depends on which model you get. If you get it for just a specific make it’s like $250. If you get the full system that is compatible with all cars it’s like $1000.
