DIY Copper Tiki Torches anchored with Fast Setting Concrete

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

These copper tiki torches are one of my favorite outdoor DIY projects. They are modern, and clean looking but are quite easy to make. I made them 2 different ways and anchored them with a concrete footing made from Quikrete Fast-Setting concrete mix. This method of post setting can be used for all sorts of outdoor projects. The first one I made I exposed the copper pieces together, which is really easy. For the 2nd one I tried soldering the pieces. This was the first time I soldered copper and it was definitely a learning experience.

Nice project. I've done a ton of soldering pipe through the decades and one thing I found is you can always reheat a joint to get the solder to spread more evenly or to dress it up a bit. Adding or wiping with a wet rag to add or remover solder helps the over all finish as well. Of course you have to be careful not to over heat a joint as it would ruin your water tight seal. Also if you concentrate heat on the thicker copper first, typically the Fitting, you only really need to heat one side and than touch the other side with solder, when it's hot enough it will flow like water to seal the entire joint. Solder is cold and when applied to a hot joint causes it to heat sink, for lack of a better description, around the entire joint and fill in the gaps. Copper spreads heat really fast so there is no real need to turn and heat the entire piece evenly, the copper will spread the heat faster then you can turn and heat it; just saying. It was nice to see the various adapters working the way you used them, that was very clever. With regards to the Quickset, you could have just tamped it a bit into the ground then left it overnight with no water, it would have set. Concrete draws moisture out of the ground when buried like that. I learned that year ago from someone setting fence posts. At that time I thought he was crazy but sure enough it worked like a charm. I was building a Deck on the neighbors house while he was working on their fence so we got to exchange a few ideas. Something else you could have done was used a cinder block and filled it with concrete as you did, to make a portable stand, or two portable stands side by side. Just make sure to use a backer board so you don't stick the concrete to other concrete or make a unnecessary mess on the ground. It probably would not be a bad idea to put 1" foam board in the bottom of the hole first and then fill with concrete. Either way would work just fine...

In order to solder the copper pipe it is better for it to be in horizontal position. After you heat the pipe well, you add the solder and gravity wraps it around the joint without having to move the solder too much. That way the joint comes out much better! Just a small tip, take it or leave it! Any way great, video and once again beautiful design!

Very neat project! Really like the look of those torches, and I'm very happy you did one the old fashioned way as well. A little tip when soldering, you can reapply heat after you've added the solder to help it flow out better. Should help with some of the messy results.

HomeMadeModern You should check out myfordboy's videos here on youtube, he does a fair bit of soldering brass which could definitely come in useful if you want to learn more. Check out his "Make a Drip Feed Lubricator, Oiler" video for starters!

Switch & Lever Also, when sweating copper keep in mind that the solder will go wherever there is flux, so if I am worried about the look of a copper joint, I apply the flux carefully and try to clean it off of surfaces that I don't want soldered or discolored (even if the flux doesn't pull in solder, it will discolor the copper when it heats up, but that is an easy cleanup with steel wool or sandpaper).

HomeMadeModern Another tip when you finish applying solder, use a damp cloth and wipe around the freshly applied solder. This will leave you with a drip free joint and give you a cleaner look. Great video, keep them coming!!!

Copper Cattails! (Typha) Apparently, copper responds to various chemicals well to make interesting patinas. Never done it intentionally, at least not yet.

This looks so neat and elegant, the cap is like cherry on top :) But I think use some copper wire as the cap's handle might be better

Hello I am from Argentina! I understood well? you first show the version with "glue" and then the "solde" version with silver? both options work in the same way? which do you recommend more? I prefer the glue! Thanks for sharing your talent!

Great idea and video. You could try Mapp Gas that burns hotter and use 50/50 solder which is lead based since this isn't for drinking water.

Solder flows towards the heat. So next time apply the heat to one side and keep it there and apply the solder to the other side. Once it melts keep feeding it into the pipe until you see it go all the way around.

was thinking this was gonna be a great addition to my fire pit. But the copper pipes in the video turned really black at the top. Do you think adding some sort of lip between the wick and the copper basin holding the fuel would have less black soot showing. Or do you have any ideas to keep that black soot from collecting. I know it would wipe off, but i want it to stay clean while in use, or at least stay clean on visible areas for better aesthetics.

***** Maybe another inverted 1"x.5" reducer would make a good lip/cup to keep the sooty smoke from sticking to the outer surfaces.
