Beautiful Wine Bottle Tiki Torches

These torches look beautiful, give more hours in your yardscape, upcycle spent beverage bottles, repel mosquitoes, are economical, and easy to make! What’s not to love?
We got this idea from Pinterest® and wondered if these torches looked as good and functioned as well as Pinterest® shows. Indeed, they do!
To make them, you’ll need some basic tools, including a hacksaw, adjustable wrench, screwdriver (or drill-driver), metal file, drill and drill bits, and a propane torch.
The supplies you’ll need are:
beverage bottle (both wine and beer bottles work),
Solid plumbing solder
Paste flux
A flux brush
10” to 12” of rigid ½” copper pipe PER torch
1 - ½” copper coupling (solder type)
Large steel washer with 1” to 1-½” outer diameter, inside just slips over the coupling
A tiki-torch ½” Fiberglas torch wick
4” to 6” of ⅜” (16 threads per inch) galvanized threaded rod
2 - ⅜” x 16 galvanized nuts
A ¾” split ring extension hanger
A ⅜” galvanized ceiling plate
A container of Tiki-torch fuel
Most of these items are easy to locate. The most difficult things to find are the split ring extension hangers and the ceiling plates. We also ended up getting the wicks from an online supplier to save some drive time.
For the extension rings and ceiling plates, visit www.supplyhouse.com. We even got a 6’ length of galvanized ⅜” - 16 threaded rod from them (around $4). They have reasonable prices, quick delivery and $4.95 flat rate shipping. The part number for the ⅜” ceiling plate is GVPL038 (about 70¢ each at the time of filming). The part number for the ¾” split ring extension hanger is GVSR075H and cost about 73¢ each.

Using this hardware and assembly approach, you can mount the torches in various ways, including affixed to a fence, porch post, or weighted stanchion post for portability. In fact, you can pass on using mounting hardware entirely, and place the torches freestanding on a side table or center of a table. If you do this, make SURE to increase the stability of the bottle by partially filling it with glass marbles or globs, aquarium rock, and small river pebbles.
Remember, BE SAFE! Keep children away from them, as they are glass and can be broken by hard objects. These are open flame devices, so they are not toys, and they much have sufficient distances to other flammable objects. When you do make the mounting set up, make sure the length of the threaded rod is sufficient enough to provide enough stand-off from the post so that the flame is not close to the surface.
But most of all - enjoy these! These are colorful and clever, and sure to enhance the outdoor setting while evoking lots of compliments! And, if you use citronella scented fuel, you’ll have a lot fewer mosquitoes and “no-see-ums” to deal with.
When you want to pump up your yardscape decor - JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

Putting it on a table or railing could definitely turn it into a Molotov Cocktail if knocked over... best to mount it
Lots of different skills and safety measures on display. I don’t like to throw Martinelli’s grape juice bottles away. This reuse works.
That bracket with the bottle could be a light lamp too. Great idea.

I love this idea and the bracket. I might have to dig out the new shoulder joint I figured out to fix a doll's arm that stilled allowed for movement.

Do you really need the copper tube inside? I've seen some without the copper inside. Can you confirm if it'll work without or it's a must?

It can work without it but here's why I designed it the way I did. #1 having the wick inside the copper tube keeps it straight (vertical) and burning evenly, #2 holes drilled in the copper tube allow the right amount of fuel to get into it and wet the wick, and #3 In my opinion, the copper tube adds to the appearance of the torch.

Hey Jay awesome video! I'm stating a little hobby repurposing wine barrels and staves. These Tikis have been done all over the internet but little info on how to get them done and most critical where to find the parts to make this project coming to fruition. I literally spent a couple hours yesterday looking for all the right components ordered some on Amazon don't know what I'm going to get? Why do you need the pipe all the way down? Can't it just stand on its own, or suspended by the top?

K.M., this is one of the options you have. I took this approach because it make the wick assembly stand up straight on the top reliably, as well as made the wick more difficult to see in the bottle. I thought having a white wick in the bottle would not be that attractive. Lastly, if you do have any gravel or glass objects down in the bottle for ballast or decoration, it makes it easier to take the wick in and out when you need to put new fuel in. Hope that helps! What can I use to do this with out welding\sodering. I don't know how to do that. Also don't have money to get stuff like that.
