DIY Concrete Staining Basement Floor
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I decided to try and DIY my basement floor with a concrete stain (link below) for a flooring alternative. I couldn’t afford to epoxy the basement floor but I found this product online at www.diyconcrete.com and thought I’d give it a shot. The last thing I wanted to do was apply garage floor paint because I’ve used it before and it always turns out terribly. Getting the concrete clean enough to apply the stain was probably the hardest part for this job. Overall it worked pretty good but I could have probably done a little better job with the application of the sealer. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching.

Lol, seems trivial but I’m not an expert an when you have no clue it really is the little things that can keep you from moving forward with a project like this.

Love the vid. We tested our technique with the stain in newspaper until we found our groove. At first we thought it looked like an 80’s hair salon but once you get your furniture in & a couple rugs, it really is an awesome finish. We went for a more mottled look in a dark brown.

RB! Thanks man. Getting the floor clean was 90% of the job. The stain took no time to put down (maybe an hour) however the sealer didn’t quite dry as fast as I had hoped. I ended up leaving the sealer on for an extra day before walking on it. Ventilation and a fan or two would really help.
I love the video! But I have questions about the prep work. Did you go in before hand and smooth out or resurface any of the concrete? Or was that the base slab?
How long did you have to wait after the initial cleaning to apply stain? Is this a project that can be done in one day for a bedroom? Or does it require drying time between steps?
Thank you great deal & looks sharp was @ a buddies house he just paid $5200 to get his done 🤷🏻♂️
Fabulous ❤
Do you do more than one layer of sealant? BTW this turned out amazing. Also, did you leave all the divets and stuff in the concrete?

Can you use a pressure sprayer to apply the sealer as well? Was thinking is would be more even but wasnt sure if you would get clogging.
Do you have advice on tearing up carpet and staining? We’re wanting to do our bedrooms.
Hi great video. Planning on doing this to my basement soon. Question for ya, what type of sand paper did you use on the concrete sander for cleaning your floors? Thank you
@RinkVideo
10 ай бұрын
Hey Jason, I rented that orbital sander from Home Depot and they basically had 3 different sanding pads. They’re kinda like scotchbrite texture. The white one was too soft so I used the black and green. Long story short: they’ll have what you need at the tool rental.
Looks awesome, appreciate the the DIY video.
You show the staining process, but using an acid stain that requires neutralization, is the process the same with 2 different stain colors? Is there an issue of one color bleeding into the other during neutralization?
What was the total sq footage that you covered using the stain, and degreaser? And how many kits did you end up using?
I just need to do my back porch cement!
Great video! I’m about to order. I noticed you had an old drain or similar in one spot. Did u sand that down or just stain over it? I have similar spot!

They call him Hawk Eye Exton! That was just an access cover to a clean-out which are usually just a plastic cover. I took out the plastic and cut a piece of mdf, covered that with premixed concrete, and tried to blend it in. It looks like crap now and was a terrible idea. The mdf takes on too much moisture. Your comment is a good reminder for me to pull that up and see if it’s mouldy underneath.
Nice work! I'm considering this product for my garage, did you find the floor to be slick after your sealed it? specifically if it were to get wet?
@RinkVideo
2 жыл бұрын
I’m thinking about doing my garage as well but I deal with a lot of salt and snow where I live. I was thinking about using this stain and then finding a harder more industrial sealer (but will probably be slippery?). As for slick, the basement floor is not slick but it’s definitely slicker than just raw concrete. Maybe a guy could do two coats of sealer and put a little sand in the second coat?

Looks great! What's it feel like walking on this bare feet? Does this still feel like concrete, more like epoxy, or something in between?
@RinkVideo
Жыл бұрын
Great question. It feels slick/smooth to me…as in a bit slippery with socks on. I think your assessment of something in between epoxy and concrete is fair.
Does any floor sander work? Is there a special sandpaper for cement?
This 100% (almost) convinced me that we will be doing this to our basement. Our sump pumps stopped and we had a flood, so we had to tear up the flooring, so this is a great, cheaper alternative to do! Do you have any suggestions for if there are small cracks, fill them in, leave them? Thanks. Subscribed and liked!
@RinkVideo
3 ай бұрын
NEW SUB PARTY!!!!!! You know I think it all depends on what kind of style/look you're going for. Sometimes repairing the cracks looks worse than the crack itself. This is a decision that only you can make but maybe you could try fixing a crack in an area that isn't visible and go from there? I feel bad for your luck with the sumps quitting. Nobody needs that headache! Thanks for the support!
Love the way your floor turned out. Do you think this would be OK to do on an area that's gets flooded from salt water?
@RinkVideo
6 ай бұрын
That’s an awesome question. I guess it would depend on what sealer you use. Maybe you could find a specific sealer. I am very very very far away from salt water so this definitely is not my strong suit.
The link you have takes you to a lot that has acrylic sealer instead of epoxy. Did you order the epoxy separate or was it included in your kit but they now changed that? Thanks. Great video!
@RinkVideo
Жыл бұрын
I didn’t use epoxy Duane. I used an acrylic polyurethane. A friend of mine gave me that matte DK 400WB that he had left over from his house. So I got the kit without sealer but the stuff I used is exact same. Hope that clears up any confusion.
Super helpful video! How many coats of stain did you end up using? Looking to stain our basement concrete floors and trying to determine how much product to purchase
@RinkVideo
Жыл бұрын
Meg! Glad you liked. I only did a couple super light coats so I hardly used any stain. Can’t remember if I mentioned it in the video but I think I had 4-6 bottles of stain but only ended up using 2. (Maybe not even) I didn’t want it too dark so I diluted it more than what was recommended and I sprayed it on super thin. Like super duper thin because I didn’t want to overdo it. Long story short: 2 thin coats and only let the first coat dry for maybe 15 minutes.

Love your video. Can you spray on your sealer instead of rolling it?
@RinkVideo

Hmmmm that's an interesting question. I feel like if that was an option I would not have rolled mine but I can't say for sure. Which is odd because I sprayed my concrete driveway with the same sprayer. I feel like maybe it's too thick to spray maybe? Anyway, short answer is I'm not sure.
So when using a water based stain, do I need to clean the floor before applying the sealant?
This looks like perfect idea for my older house with a utility/laundry room. You did say the clear coat over the stain does have a strong smell. How long did that last for? I have cat that I keep litter box in and concerned about the strong smell.

I used the one that came with the kit but it’s pretty small. So I borrowed one from my buddy…not sure what kind it was. I think you could use any sort of weed sprayer but the one that comes with the kit has a couple different nozzles. It’s my personal opinion that the type of sprayer doesn’t really much matter. Maybe take a look at the diyconcrete.com site to see if they have any specific info. Honestly I wouldn’t sweat it though.
