I've been having fun making concrete pumpkins this past week! It's the perfect, long-lasting fall decoration for your home & garden! I figured out an easy, quick way to make them with very little supplies or expense... pretty much the do-it-yourself-ers dream!
Here's what I used for this project:
Paper Mache Pumpkins (I got mine at JoAnns Craft stores tinyurl.com/khsrpar)
-Concrete Mix
-Water
-Scissors, Trowel, Butter Knife
-2 containers for scooping both wet and dry concrete mix (I used a glass measuring cup and doubled up solo cups)
-1 piece of stiff paper
-Strong tape
If you liked this project, please share it with your friends!

Love, love this idea. I saw these in your newest post decorating your mom’s house & am so glad you referenced them!!
Nice project. I think my wife will like these. Couple suggestions. Drill small holes (1/8 in. or less) in all the higher parts of the pumpkin body to release air. Use the handle of your knife to tap/vibrate the upper sections.
I would use the plastic jack-o'-lantern with the strap on top like a pail. By the way the Pyrex measuring cup you are using is made in our sister company and printed where I work. I make corelle dinnerware in Corning, NY.
I want to do this... Kids in our neighborhood always kick and smash pumpkins. Imagine the look on their face when they kick the pumpkin and break a toe... I know, I'm mean lol

These are gorgeous! Just a tip, don't forget safety glasses and gloves when you work with cement! A concrete sealer will prolong the life of your pumpkins, and there are stains for concrete, too.
That is such an awesome idea. You can also add color to the concrete before you add it to the mold.
I would suggest using cement rather than concrete. Cement doesn't have all the gravel and rocks in it so it would fill crevices better and be smoother. Just my two cents.

Edan Robertson : cement with rocks is a better filler, it will hold up a million times better and your product will be stronger..... I work with cement on a daily basis.
Loved the pumpkin stepping stones you made. Never would of thought of that! Can't wait to do it.!

Wow. Spectacular job.
This is a super cute idea! We have just moved to New Zealand and pumpkins aren’t in season on Halloween, so I’ll definitely being making some for new year ❤️
Great idea! I've been looking for outdoor pumpkins that will last and the only ones I've seen are quite pricey, these are so cute!
Great idea❣️They came out very nicely.👍
Loved this had to share
Adorable

AMAZING Idea!!! Thanks for sharing:)
Love it , thank You !
Thank you, exactly what I was searching for. Going out to purchase paper machete pumpkins tomorrow. Bought real pumpkins this year, spoiled in 3 days on the porch, ugh. Never again.

Great DIY love it! Also my plastic pumpkins blow off my porch from the wind, these concrete pumpkins won’t do that. Probably recommend using gloves as concrete is really drying of the skin. Love your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge , such an inspiration !
Cool stuff
Very cute!!!

Great project. I would just add some orange dye or paint it.
Could you support the paper pumpkin up side down in a flower pot and add the concrete through a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin?
Very clever
Love this approach. @Lily Ardor also has a quick, easy way to make them.
Cute!
That is such a great idea! I bet they would look incredible once moss and fungi and stuff starts taking over them in the garden. I hope it's not too late to try and find some of those paper mache pumpkins. Most places are already clearing out the Halloween decor.

+Garden Answer I'm dying to see a tutorial on that!
I've really enjoyed watching your tutorials over the last few days. You are very creative.
pretty cool idea. I hate rotten pumpkins after Halloween
Would be cute to cut a stick and use as a stem.Very cute idea.
I would cut the top off the pumpkin and then pour in the cement. I would then fill the top I cut off and place the top on the other half of the pumpkin. You would need to securely tape the seam and let it cure.
cool
Add some powdered paint to your concrete...for some color.

Helen Wyatt is a KZreadr from Georgia. Cute little ol' gal who makes really kewl stuff with concrete. She has a video called "Portland Cement My little Pumpkins new way and acrylic painting" She knows her stuff, and they pumpkins are adorable!

Can you add a link?
So cool. Can you do Jack O' Lantern pumpkin?
On the top of the concrete pumpkin when you do the stem, get 3 pieces of straight rigid wire curl both ends push 3 in to the cement pumpkin leave about 1inch above for stem. then do stem, makes it good and strong. then paint them make sure you seal them up good, with the winter freeze on top will start to crack them. Then if you want to put 2 pieces of PVC through the mould where the eyes would be, when dry turn them out then 2 small lights through the back

Making concrete pumpkins tomorrow, Thursday, Oct 1,2020. Anyone remember a recipe of water to concrete, plz? Thx so much. cgzone8
Can you do a pumpkin succulent project for fall this year?
Add dye to the concrete to colour🙂💙
Hahaha, this old video is a classic, those pumpkins, well, they speak for themselves...I don't think I have seen them ever in your garden/front steps etc. in all the other videos since this one 5 years ago!!!
Super cute, but I think I'm gonna try putting the concrete in a heavy duty plastic bag and use twine to create the lines so I don't have to buy the paper mache pumpkins.
This would be great using a hypertufa mixture so it wont be to heavy

Garden Answer, where can you buy hypertufa?
@Imaginos9
6 жыл бұрын
You can buy all the stuff for hypertufa at a store like Home Depot. According to Home Depot you mix hypertufa yourself using: (mix dry parts thoroughly) 1.5 parts Sphagnum peat moss 1.5 parts Perlite 1 part Portland cement 1 part water (really just add water until it's clay/cottage cheese like) Doing a google search for hypertufa mix will show you some variations on the mixture and other ingredients you can use or substitute. For instance you may mix all 3 at a 1 to 1 ratio to be a bit stronger/more durable.
❤
Love your hair Laura it suits you.., hope to see you with a straight hair😊
Laura how heavy are they? Could you have used a hypertufs recipe to make these?
Very cute. It would be even better if they serve some more functions (not just for garden decoration). ^_^ How about an opening as fountain ?
You could’ve made a bigger hole to fill the pumpkin! It would’ve made fitting it a lot easier.
you can color your pumpkins with a color concrete additive as well.
@gardenanswer

+David Messina That would probably be much easier (and less messy) than staining afterwards, too!
cute :) try putting concretes in a mold like a plastic pumpkin pale from dollar tree
@seapearltoo1

Pail.
Use plastic pumpkins. And insert plastic cup to make hole for fillings. Spray both with cooking spray and cut off 20 hours later. Way cooler and easier. And you get a pumpkin face to go with it.
This may be a silly idea (as I am not very familiar with concrete) but could you simply "skimcoat" an artificial pumpkin to create a similar look? Would it be durable? Any masons out there with advice? 🤔🎃 Ps. LOVE your videos @gardenanswers!
Thanks for the great idea. How did the hypertufa pumpkin turn out?
@gardenanswer

It turned out great- much lighter than the concrete version! ;)
I was thinking can I use a Real pumkin emptied and dried, and fill it up with cement. I would probably have to cut it in half and stick it together with tape before filling it. Has anyone tried this?
Could you leave the stem on and cut a hole in the bottom to fill with concrete? That way the top of the form would be perfect.
@pammiesue7931

i tried it this way yesterday, come to find out the stem isn't hollow and stuffed with paper so now my pumpkin doesn't have a stem i'am going to try to make one like she did and hope it works out ok lol

How was it for you removing the paper mache pumpkin?
How about just sealing the outside of the pumpkins and then applying a thin coat of cement to the outside.
The paper mache pumpkins are kind of expensive. Would be nice to have a reusable mold! Also, what about using Quickrete so it sets up more quickly?
@bowler8
Жыл бұрын
use quickrete and panty hose and string
What did u do with your concrete pumpkins from 2 yrs ago?
Where did you find the tall pumpkin? All I can find are the short round ones?
any way do this real pumpkin? cool got ray villifane pumpkin had made cement. guess make mold for that though.
Hint: Wear gloves or the concrete will really dry out your hands! Concrete is very basic (+ pH) and isn't good for your skin! Great tutorial!!!!!
Great idea! Nice work! You really do need though to wear gloves and face mask to protect yr lungs due to dust which is harmful!
💞💞💞💞
Please use rubber gloves next time you work with concrete it has silica which can be absorbed by your skin i worked 3yrs with a concrete company and they always made sure we would use rubber gloves eye protection and wore a face mask so we won't breathe in the cement dust its called silicosis
I have seen someone use plastic pumpkins for mold.
you can use a plastic pumpkin ,,
would it be easier to use a funnel to put the cement in? You could make the funnel bottom a bit wider
@pammiesue7931
8 жыл бұрын
my concrete had so many rocks it wouldn't go down the funnel even with a widen bottom
Concret pumkin pots
Do u have frankincense trees ?
I just tried this project and wow, I'm having a hard time removing the paper mache. It's not coming off anywhere near as easily as yours does in the video. Did you put any kind of a release (like cooking oil/spray - I've seen people do that on plastic molds) on the inside of the pumpkin before you added the cement? My cured pumpkin is currently soaking in water and I'm hoping I'll be able to remove the mache that way. I used the same paper mache pumpkin from JoAnns.

did it come off? i'am getting ready to make one, do you have any tips?
@CCluff
8 жыл бұрын
Hi. It did come off after soaking entire thing in bucket of water for several hours. Peeled it off in layers and then use a scrubby plastic dish washing thing at the end to get remaining papers off. It wasn't too bad. I used quick set cement, and I'm wondering if that's why.

It's very very heavy. I'm going to do hypertufa next time and I will spray inside of pumpkin with cooking oil (PAM).
Could you do this with hyperturfa instead of concrete?
@gardenanswer

+Laura Anderson Absolutely! In fact, when I do this again, I will use hypertufa instead. Much lighter!!! :)
hi its look nice but how you make a mold and it is beeter to colour it
Please protect your hands and use a face mask.............that dust is very dangerous to the throat and lungs. Nice work.

True but the pumpkins are more than two inches thick, so cement could crack and concrete is used. I plan on buying a cement and sand mix, than add perlite. You posted your comment a year ago, but your suggestions are welcome, because I also struggle with the rough look of concrete.

I was thinking the same thing! I just made concrete pumpkins (using the panty hose trick instead) and burned my fingers with the cement mixture. Cement burns are no joke.
Oh my gosh, I read about hypertufa in the comments! My imagination is going WILD!
