DIY Cleaning Antique Coins Via Electrolysis

Ғылым және технология

roadkillscjim sent me some coins a while back and i now finally tried cleaning them via electrolysis, i think it worked well even though the coins didn't have any detail left on them.

Your not supposed to leave them in for 24 hours !! Im surprised you had any coin left!!!

10 hours jesus christ, no wonder they didn't have much detail left :P I cleaned a couple of 1700s coins with electrolysis and it only took 45 minutes.

Why do you think the dissolved solids were different colors between coins? I suspect the red of the vegas water was the result of some of the minerals already in there but you did it twice with home water and one went green as expected while the other made that gross beige color.

Vinegar works well also. I have used it on coins and bolts and hinges to my car. Cleans off well. But you do have the vinegar smell to deal with while you are using it.

which wires do you connect to what for the rig? and how would i figure out what ones they were on another power supply? I want to try this on some silver I have. heard it works really well on hard to reach places.

David Yarbrough positive is the sacrifice and negative is the one that gets cleaned, but test it on a rusty nail or something first to find out. my memory is a bit rusty...... ;p

Can a power control dial be added to the power supply? I need to make a rectifier for electroforming copper. They are expensive to purchase so I am looking for diy solution. Thanks, J

Yeah, you can get Chinese voltage regulator modules on eBay that'll do the trick. And you won't need any rectification for a PC PSU either, because its output is already DC.

does it damage the surface of the coin? not saying the coin is in mint condition.. but the surface of the coin turns out not smooth, but rather a bit coarse with small dimples? I have recently bought a 1911 nickel, and it has thick green and black deposit. would seem to be found in mineral rich water, and gone thru electrolysis. I cleaned it further and removed most of the gunk, but see the damage on the coin. it is not smooth.

I would like to mention that I found a 1911 V nickel in circulation in slot machine coins back in 1999. It is the commonist of all V nickels.

Try to spray them with pam cooking oil. I have used electrolysis on a few old crusty Indians and they came out great after I sprayed them with the pam and let dry.

If you use a low acidic cleaning solution it will usually come out ok but don't leave it in more than 10 minutes. You do not want to get rid of the patina.

Hai what sorta metal material is used on the anode and cathode? might try electrolysis at some point myself , If you want to pull more amps from the power supply than 2amp with out it cutting out you can bypass the current protection chip inside if you research the data sheet on chip, I managed to pull it off with a old 250w pc psu and i can pull at least 5amps out of it which is fun since now it will make nichrome wire glow and even light up car halogen bulbs without it cutting out. :-)

chaseme81871 well every chemical reaction is a transfer process. but in this instance you are transferring electrons so one side drops it's oxygen atoms and the other side bonds with oxygen atoms.

The water in Vegas is too basic. It always caused me problems keeping the right Ph on the swimming pool, having to guess at how much pool acid to add to the water. My roommate got me started on the bottled water and now I am a proponent of everyone using bottled water , everywhere in the US--Not just in Vegas.
