My car (M62TU) had been sitting for 1 to 2 months, minus a 1 mile drive once or twice. This weekend I retimed the motor, put everything back together and noticed an alarming ticking from bank 2. This method worked great! I held the rev between 2800-3000 rpm for 3 minutes and that cleared up my ticking noise. Thanks!

Thank you kindly for the advice. I've been doing extensive research on this engine and doing work here and there to get it up to speed. Basically this ticking noise is the only issue I haven't understood till viewing this video. We have an NZ new 1998 AC Schnitzer 540i. Cheers from sleepy NZ.

Thanks for uploading this video. I own a 2007 e90 325i and have the loud lifter ticking issue. I do plenty of short trips (~10 minutes) as a consequence of living so close to work. The ticking comes and goes, I try to at least idle the car for 2-3 minutes prior to driving on cold starts. I'll give this a go and see how I go. Thanks again.

Normal to have a lifter making noise, i would say not for long after initial start up, You can try change up the visco on the oil and see if it makes any changes, also a tip, instead of doing these oil flushes.. just decrease the span of oil changes, daily drive i recommend 15000km, not economic but keeps the lifters and bearings in shape for longer.

@@y0Special wouldnt know bout that, had mine pretty much 80% inspected when installing new turbos, oilpan gasket, head gasket, VC gasket and more, nothing was in bad shape, its now at 276000km and its been in my possesion for over 6 years now with oil + filter once 1y or circa 15000km. As i said, daily, you dont push a daily that often, i had a commute at 40km one way almost every day. if you use whats under the hood more often when yes i agree 1k would be for the better, also getting a bigger oilcooler with larger hoses, increases the oilflow from it and holds the oil to a better viscosity. Oil as it gets to hot (cheaper oils) tends to leave residue and become charred, there is a great library of clips showing that if you didnt know. I had a 100point class (1y) about liquids and such in engines, my degree is from Engine and vehicular school, 3years studies "college". And no we didnt just studie liquids for a year, we had 5 other subjects at the same time + our project for finals haha. in case you dont trust my judgement of overhauling and inspecting my engine to the degree where i can say 1,5k is ok for a daily with some extra WHP :)

This also works on BMW and MB inline diesels from after mid 90's, just fyi. Also trying this on my Jeep Comanche which also has hydraulic lifters. They are stated to be non-adjustable, but likely will also respond to this method, from having increased oil flow for a consistent 3 minutes. I'll likely add some seafoam in the crankcase to assist, I'll post results if i get to it. If it works on the 4.0l Jeep engine, this method likely will work on any engine with hydraulic lifters.

Awesome to hear, thank you so much for the info! Just double check if you're supposed to run the engine with Seafoam in the crankcase. I haven't used it in a while, I used Amsoil last time and it stated just to let the engine idle.

First check the oil level, but it can also be a low oil pressure issue.

I had this problem on my m62b44 v8 for 15 mins of driving. i shut off the car for 10 minutes and when i came back to do what it says on video POOOOF problem gone... car running smooth.

You CAN but it's a lot of work if your not already that deep into the engine. I cleaned all mine when I did a head gasket last year. I let them soak it kerosene for a few days and the took them all apart by smacking them against my workbench. You have to smack the HARD and contact nice and flat when you do it. My hand still hurts when I think about it. I kid you not, sore hand for days...but worth it.

What does this procedure actuall do? Just to get the engine to operating temp and basically as if you were to take a longer drive instead of short 5-10 minute trips. Better to just take a drive somewhere once a week and keep your engine RPM round 3000 for a few minutes.

It bleeds the hydraulic lifters, so it removes that ticking sound when your engine is running. Technically yes you could drive the vehicle at around 3000rpm, but not everyone has that opportunity, not to mention it's safer to do this in a parked position rather than watching your tachometer on the road.

@@4DIYers gonna chime in here 4 years later. I have ticking noise, and I'm not even going to attempt your fix because I drove my car 300 kilometres on the highway, set cruise at 140, rpms were at around 3000. Stayed on cruise and 3000 rpms for well over 2 hours. Ticking is still there

Had the same noise on 02 330Ci with 25k miles...lots of folk said adding Marvels Mystery Oil would help and it certainly did!...its now back to its 'musical' best...give it a try ;)

Hard to say... The ticking can be caused by what type of oil is being used, the lifters could be worn, they could be sticking, or if the vehicle sits for a longer period of time.

This work on a N46 BMW 2liter petrol?

This worked on my 98 jeep wrangler 4.0L. I was getting a tapping at idle and i tried this at 2500rpms for 3minutes and it worked.The tapping is gone as of now.I will update this comment if anything changes.

You shouldn't have any issues with that oil. You can try an oil additive. Surprisingly the stuff does work from personal experience. Add the required amount such as Sea Foam (what I've used in the past) a couple hundred miles before your next oil change.

Isn´t it more convenient to do it on the highway? due to tall gearing you can do it in third or fourth gear, and at the same time you go somewhere.

@@blackie75 It's 10mn tops, men. I believe one can spare 10mn of his day to get his vehicle engine better. Also, doing it in the driveway ensures that nothing forces you to slow down on the road, dropping the rpm. The process works when maintaining consistent rpm for the required time.

Worked on my M52tu, not on my N52.

Can you not do this by driving on the highway at 3000 RPM?

We call this an "Italian tune up" in the UK. Will give it a go on my Range Rover.

Good video, but it should, in my opinion, be called, lifter re-priming due to bleeding down.

is it going to work if i am driving on a highway on 3000 rpm without load.. just cruising? or the car has to be stationary, and maybe explanation why if so? thank you..

I'm assuming that is synthetic you're running and Castrol does make a great quality oil. You could try running a different weight oil and see if there is a difference then. Do you have any engine lights??? That is the N62, correct??? Any vanos issues???

+tanjali omar tanjali Unfortunately no you cannot. If you are not using synthetic oil, then I would highly recommend switching over to it. Besides that, also try some engine internal cleaner. I have tried some myself (Sea Foam) and it worked excellent. It did solve a noisy lifter in another car.

Yes it is. I wouldn't do a tutorial on it if it wasn't, this is a procedure right directly from BMW. Your car should redline at about 6500rpm, so it's a long ways from pushing the engine.

A nice hard drive 10 about 4 miles of hard driving then after twice a month

You probably won't even see your gauge move. This will depend on what engine you have as well.
