DIY Bit Sharpener

Ғылым және технология

DIY bit sharpener, in this video I am going to show you how to make a drill bit sharpener, It is super easy. All you need is a coupling nut and a matching thread bolt. You have to do some grinding, drilling, and filing, but that’s it! No welding required.

    Glad you liked it. Angle grinder and drills are essential power tools. Definitely save up some money to buy one, even the cheapest Chinese no brand one are good enough for most people. Don't forget the safety equipment like gloves and glasses.

    Although it is an interesting design concept. I would definitely not use a small angle grinder as my first choice unless it was variable-speed. Most of the small angle grinders are in the 11000 RPM range which generates quite a bit of heat on the tip. As a suggestion I would drop the speed dramatically on a variable speed grinder so as to limit the amount of heat generated on The Cutting Edge of the drill bit. You may also opt out to use a quenching method in between or quench it or cool it as it's being sharpened. Just a helpful suggestion. I would also lose that music it is very distracting and is not conducive for instructional purposes. I hope my feedback helps.

    Thank you. I think you I know what do you mean, adding to extra angle by the side of each surface will help the bit to penetrate easier and improves the overall performance of the bit.

    How about fixing your grinder in a vise and then with the dull bit in a hand drill capable of slow speed (screwdriver mode) approach the grinding surface at the proper angle while the bit is rotating? This will grind down the bit at an identical angle on all sides and conically instead of flat (pyramidal) like the approach in this video.

  • @KayvanCrafted

    @KayvanCrafted

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I actually tried this exact method, the problem is you are ending up with a bit with a pointy tip, exactly like a cone, and it can not drill through anything. All the shapes and angle you see on the bits they are useful and they are doing things. Bits are simple looking but rather complicated machines. The bit sharpener I have designed here is far from perfect but because it's so simple it is acceptable for most of the home users. for example the tip angle of normal metal bits are 118 degree here I used 120 degree, because of the hexagon nut, the face you are referring shouldn't be flat but it is and it's working. Version 2.0 of the bit sharpener is already done and soon will be uploaded here though with a lot of adjustment capability.

  • @datmeme8967

    @datmeme8967

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@KayvanCrafted Yeah, I was just watching some other sharpening tutorials. Seems like the conical tip will work up to about 3/8" or so. After that you have to create a 7° attack angle for the cutting edge. I'd probably use the cone method for larger bits and then touch up the cutting edges manually.

    Nice design, But what's the distance 3mm holes

  • @KayvanCrafted

    @KayvanCrafted

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks man, You can choose 4.5mm between the center of the 3mm and 6mm holes and 6mm between center of 6mm and 10mm holes. I also recommend to use 9.5mm or even 9mm instead of 10mm bits for the last hole if you are using the M10 size nut.

  • @KayvanCrafted

    @KayvanCrafted

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Gurvinder Singh, well TBH if I wanted to sharpen that big of a drill bit I'd rather not to use a jig, but I guess if you like to use this technique you just have to find a big enough nut and bolt for your bit. the M10 size here is just an example, the instructions would be the same with smaller and larger diameters.

    I would tend to agree that you're not showing consistent results on drill bits especially with smaller sizes. To keep the true you should keep the center axis of the drill bit uniform so that as the Revolutions of the drill start to cut its not off or gives you a wobble.
