Thanks Paul, sounds good mate, I considered smaller return pipes but went for the one big one in the end. To be honest the three smaller ones would have gone under my glass easier but its done now and seem to be working great 🍻👍

That looks clean, what I mean by that is it don’t look out of place, some home made Iv seen look untidy sat on the side of the pond. I’ll be looking into building one once my pond is up and running, I’m just building my filter house at the moment, well I am once the timber gets here. Great video again daz, 👍👌

Nice. Given that you have an outlet pipe rather than a blade, you might be able to get some additional benefit from your shower by configuring the return pipe to allow foam to escape via an up pipe. Essentially making your shower double as a foam fractionator.

I made a similar homemade shower last Summer.... one thing I did was to lay a 4 micron screen on top of the media in the top container (just under the spray bar)..... it collects a lot of the fines, easy to wash off once a month or so..... have seen others use filter floss also

Just a little tip drill a 6mm hole about 15mm back in the bottom of the pipe it will stop the water running back 👍

I built a very similar one back in January, been running for about 3 weeks now. Seems to be doing the job. As you say won't really know for sure until feeding etc starts. I used the 400×300×310 euro containers without handles, top one with a hinged lid. I got mine from Manutan. Can hardly hear it running, unless your next to it. As for media I'm still doing some tests on that. For the time being I've got around 40kg of E25 alfagrog in it. Mainly to get it up and running. But that will be swapped out, once I finally decided on media. As I have a fair amount of plants I'm not that hung up on nitrates, as they rarely go past 10-15ppm.

Hi Adam, sounds good mate. Have a look at my earlier shower media video if you haven't seen it already. If you are not worried about nitrate you would probably be ok with pumice. I would definitely recommend one of the ceramics though if you can for all round performance and durability. You got the slightly taller boxes to so even better height 👍👍👍

You could easily hide it with a vine or just paint it the same color as the wall and it should blend right in! Tons of ways to make it happen.

Hi Anthony, yes I have turned it up a little bit. It wasn't a lot, just a=enough to overcome the extra bit of head loss from going up to the top of the shower rather than over the pond wall 👍👍

Another great video Daz, and given me an idea to design and build my own Bakki. Not sure if I missed it or you didn’t mention, have you given it it’s own independent pump or have you just T’d off your existing ?? All the best pal Steve

Hi Steve, no I've just rerouted my normal return to go over the shower instead of over the wall. Just turned the pump up a tiny bit to compensate for the extra head loss 👍👍

As a novice on a learning curve I have watched a number of your videos and am very impressed with the knowledge you have and the informative presentation on the various topics presented. I have just completed watching the 4 parts of the DIY Bakki Shower Construction and have a couple of questions. The first is regarding flow rates. Do you have a flowmeter that you use to confirm what you end up getting on the return. The second is cleaning. The Tempest you have involves closing 2 valves and opening a tap. 2 minutes later job done hands clean and dry. How much maintenance does the Bakki require or is it self cleaning so to speak from the bacteria's in the media. Thank you and keep the videos comng.

Hi Hi, so sorry for not replying to you, I've had an issue with comments and I've missed loads of them 😒 No flow meter, I found them to be expensive and no very accurate to be honest. I just use the bucket method to measure flow. As long as you use the correct ceramic media and you have sufficient flow for your shower dimensions it wont need cleaning. I haven't cleaned this one since it was built and I ran 3 on a single pond in the past, straight from bottom drains, and didn't clean any of them for approx. 5 years.

Hi Pete, let me know what you think of the Tempest 👍 Ive honestly never used clay as from a mineral point of view I think they are a waste of time because there are more than enough minerals for koi in tap water. However, I haver been asked by a few people to do a video on clay and I believe there may be some benefit to the water clarity from using it so I have bought a bag of NTLabs Mediclay to try. I haven't put it in yet, maybe I'll do it at the weekend 👍👍👍

Great series of videos, well done. My only question are your water parameters before and after. Did you note them down so you can gauge the improvements?. I suppose the feeding season hasn't really started yet to compare?

I do record them quite regularly so I will get some idea but not ideal because I only started the pond in June last year so it was still cycling last summer. I should be able to tell though 👍👍👍

my pond is built to swimming pool standards all the filtration i have is 2 homemade showers filled with pumice top box sponge thats all u need great water quality

Inspired by your video and been looking at making a bakki filter for a while I started making my own, everything went together pretty easily, ordered my filter media from cotswold koi as recommended in your chart which was delivered a day late but that wasn’t the main problem, the advert was for 10kg of bacteria house media which is what I purchased…. or so I thought, when it arrived it states 10kg on the box but the actual weight is only 5kg….I phoned them to hear their comments and was told they know about it and have basically been waiting for people to start complaining but there is nothing they can do….

Hi Mark, there is nothing they can do??? They have broken trade descriptions act if they tell you its 10kg and then send 5kg. I would be straight on to trading standards, they cant get away with that, surely????

@@DazzleKoi I’ve been in touch with trading standards, I’ve got to contact them by recorded delivery letter, with copies of the order checkout page and the delivery note which both state I bought 10kg… which they should have got by now, and give them 14 days to reply and come up with a solution, if they don’t reply after 14 days then I have to phone trading standards again quoting the reference number I got off them and they will take it up for me…..watch this space !!!

Sounds like it might be similar media to that I purchased but under a different name, “Shigure Bacteria Home” (spelling might be slightly incorrect, it’s the same media being used by “Koi Wholesale” in their Bakki Showers!), says 10kg on the description on the box but a 5kg sticker has been added! Either way it was not marketed by weight but by volume, 80 rods/tubes per box, so no real grounds to complain and the 8 boxes appear to be doing the job! I think your earlier comments that a lot of them might be the same media is probably true! I purchased mine from a guy in The Netherlands via eBay for a fantastic price, can’t remember exactly how much now as it was some time ago but it was significantly less than the U.K. prices at the time!

Hi pal, at least it sounds like its working for you 👍👍 Yes they are definitely all coming out of China and I've seen a couple of different ones but essentially these two types are being sold under lots of different names. Its not far off BHM performance. I'm certain they reduce the firing temp and time to reduce the manufacturing costs.

Hi Tim, I haven't sat down and analysed it but or even give it any thought at all since I switched it on to be honest. But that's a good thing as its not given me any issues and its just got on with doing its thing. I'll do a little video on feedback but I've been able to feed literally anything (up to probably 15 feeds some days at a guess) and I've never had any ammonia or nitrite readings of note. I've also not seen any nitrate since it went on so that's the big bonus for me. Its hard to say how much biological filtration its done or if my other filters would have coped without it (I suspect not) but it is definitely responsible for the nitrate removal 👍👍

Hi Tim, nice one, you'll see good benefits. Nitrate is a massive appetite suppressor so if you can get it out you'll see your koi much more active and hungry and they subsequently grow much better. Give me a shot if you have any problems 👍👍👍

@@DazzleKoi Do you run your filter all year round? I have to shut down my system in the colder months to avoid damaging the drum filter. Can Bacteria Home Media be reused when the system is restarted?

Hi Tim, yes definitely. You really need it running all year round. I assume its a climate issue you have? If you switch it off you are effectively starting again with a new filter every spring. To establish a biological filter fully and reach equilibrium throughout can take up to 12 months so you are never going to have that if you turn it off. Can you maybe bypass the drum to keep water flowing to your biological media? Yes, no problem re-using the media, its just that all the bacteria will die off if you stop the water flow over it.

Hi, I have built a bakki shower by following your video, looks brilliant and works extremely well. I have a tempest before it but still get a small amount of carry over which is starting to catch on the bhm. Is this OK? Or will it blind the media and affect its performance? Thoughts are to lay some filter matting under the spray bar but concerned it may reduce the harshness of how the water crashes into the bhm. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Adam

Hi mate, sorry, I missed a load of comments, your being one of them 😒 You shouldn't really need anything if you have enough flow. I appreciate its a rock and a hard place as the tempest requires low flows and the shower needs as much as you can throw at it. Its a fine balance. I haven't touched mine for a couple of years now and its absolutely fine so I would just ride it out and let it do its thing. You are right in that adding some matting will dampen down the water velocity and reduce performance.

Excellent video - thanks. I have an Oase eco classic pump, rated at 8,500 litres per hour, that I’m not using. Rather than modify my existing filter setup, I was thinking about literally hanging the pump, opposite the return, maybe 600mm below the pond water level. The height of your shower is 900mm. According to the curve for my Oase pump, a lift of 1500mm will reduce the flow to something closer to 5,000 litres per hour, so I guess I can use the same size boxes as you? Also, instead of using the tank connector, could you cut a rectangular slot in the bottom tray?

It would probably need to be quite thin and you may be able to create like a blade effect. Let me know how you get on 👍🍻👍🍻👍

If you do cut a slot might be an idea to fit a media tray off the bottom above the slot to allow free flow and prevent any media loss!

Hello matey i hope all is well 👍🏼 Another fantastic video and very informative as expected 👏 You may have mentioned and I missed it but I'll ask anyway......very many koi keepers with showers quite often talk about airflow and gassing off....now are they just gassing off (excuse the pun 😉) of is there truth in this necessity. Hi Tom, no that's a very valid question. I am aware of the talk of needing to gas off and that's been something that's always been said about showers since they came to these shores maybe 20 years ago. Personally I do think there is a need for it but not in any way to the levels a lot think. My shower is open at the top and has the half filled 3" pipe at the bottom plus the handle holes which have a piece of plastic in front of them but are by no means air tight. I'm more than happy that there is plenty ventilation and opportunity for any gassing off that may happen. The worst case is a small amount of ammonia comes out of the water in to vapor form within the shower but its tiny tiny amounts, if any. If this doesn't escape and is re-absorbed back in to the water, not easy, then I am just back to where I was before it came out so I don't see any potential for an issue.

Hi there and thank you for watching, I appreciate the height of the shower is often an issue but if possible I like to have a minimum of 100mm from the bottom of one tray to the top of the media in the next.

Another informative video fella, I have made similar some time ago with same sizes and flow rates using biohome media and I can honestly say they do work. My water quality has never been so good and stable. Plus any blanket weed does not get a foot hold with an average of 5 ppm nitrates. Any thoughts on possible parasites symptoms, how to scrape your fish and what to look for under a scope?

@@DazzleKoi hi daz Not sure if this is of interest to you....to expand on my set up with regard to bakka filtration I have one stack for anaerobic and one stack for aerobic, the former is as you have created...the later has a chemical adjustment box with carbon packing , a box with ph buffering with oyster shell packing, both running at around 5000lts /hr then mechanical flow adjustment to just around 270lts/ hr for the remaining boxes with biohome packing with upstands for flooding the packing and air stones at the bases for oxygen. This I feel help the aerobic bacteria colony to finalise the nitrogen cycle, of course the nutrients have to be there for them. So far my water is in very good condition both in clarity and chemistry perspectives and like you my mechanical filtration is the trusted easy pod on ki micro. Hope you find this of interest, keep up the good work. BR phil

Hi, great video very well explained. Just one thought, is it better to leave the top box open to the elements or covered or does it not make any difference? I wondered if sunlight would kill off any bacteria?

Hi mate. The original Momotaro showers where always open at the top and I do like the idea of air movement and gassing off so I've always left mine open and never had a problem. There is a belief that bacteria are happier in the dark but again I'm not convinced and with porous media they are mostly inside anyway. I think if you where going to cover it you would still need to leave a good few inch gap to allow air movement.

I did give this some thought and I think you are right especially when you we consider the conditions of a natural situation in the wild with waterfalls etc that are exposed to the sun. And like you said the majority of the bacteria are hidden away in the porous holes and won’t receive any sunlight.

Yes that's a good point about nature. The rocks in rivers etc that the shower is trying to mimic are not shielded from the sun 🍻🍻👍👍🍻🍻

Good Day. Watch various other videos on the subject of Baki Filters but yours the only factual supported video (prior videos included on Baki Filter) that immediately made me pay more attention. This issue we have in South Africa is that it is exceptionally difficult (almost impossible) to get containers like the one you used with dimensions around the 400 x 300 x 270 mark. If i am only going to adjust flow to get out 5500 litres or so which would be other dimensions to consider that will still support the science/facts on this filter as explained by you? If i go longer than 400mm then need to increase my flow and that means more wattage/bigger pump etc. So in essence how far could i push the dimensions to differ from yours to still get the benefits on around 5500 litres per hour or so? Thank you

Hi mate, I feel your pain. I would say that if you have to go away from those sizes its better to go smaller if you can but if not then a little bit bigger should still give you benefits. Do you know what sizes you can get hold of?

If height is an issue I can understand why you would need to come out of the side of the bottom tray with the bulk head. However if you can get away with it you could come out of the bottom and put an elbow on the return. You wouldnt get the inch or so build up in the bottom. It's just a thought. Great video as usual Daz.

haha, hi mate, I didn't even think of that and its so obvious now you've said it 😁 You're right that I wanted to keep the height to a minimum as I needed to keep it below the top of the fence and also I have a shade sail to go back up once the last of the strong winds is over. So I wouldn't have done it that way but I could certainly have mentioned that in the video as an option for others. Cheers mate 🍻🍻

Hi Lau, return is from the black 3" pipe at the bottom of the shower in the middle. I cut it down to fit under the glass. Been watching your videos, keep up the good work 🍻👍🍻👍🍻👍🍻

Hi Tim, I would definitely go deeper mate. I used the 270mm and that's on the limit. If I changed anything about mine it would be that but I just don't have the room to go higher. Once the media went in my trays the drop was smaller than I would want ideally, but just about OK. I definitely wouldn't recommend going smaller than 270mm though.

Love your vids! I just bought 4 of the 600mm euroboxes, im gonna run it of a 12000lph pump and was wondering if a 3" outlet is big enough or do I need 4"? Intake is 1,5"

Hi mate and thank you 👍 You are on the limit there really for a 3" pipe. I honestly think it would be better to either go up to 4" or add a second 3" exit to be safe. I think the single 3" would work but if you got a bit of blockage or backing up for any reason it would be unable to cope and fill the bottom tray which would result in overflowing and losing water. I think to be safe you should go bigger or add a second one.

@@sigvez7834If you want to be able to flush the bottom you’d probably need to be able to close the 3 inch outlets or any dirt and debris will flow into the pond!

Hi Paul, its down to surface area really. The surface area of a 3" pipe is 45.6cm2 and the surface area of 2 x 2" pipes is 40.54cm2 so its a bit less but not much. I haven't tried it but based on that calculation my guess would be that it will be ok 👍

Hello there, if the filter media is mechanical filtration and the water is reasonably clean afterwards then yes, you can definitely use a shower filter to take care of your biological filtration 👍👍👍

If u haven't adjusted the pump flow rate from what it was before with out the shower .... Then u won't be getting 5000L over as u have just added massive head pressure because of how tall it is ... Might be something to consider ??

Hi Andrew, yes I've upped the pump speed to compensate and keep the 5500 litres flow I need for the Pod to function at its best. It changed very little to be honest, the return pipework is exactly the same as before except now it goes up an extra 900mm on the vertical section 👍👍

How often will you clean the first chamber ?

Hi mate, I'll have a look at it in a month or so but I shouldn't need to clean it. With the correct ceramic media it will handle some solids and its getting very little anyway as its after a Pop and a Tempest 👍👍

Hi Mark, I'm running the standard 5500 litres an hour that the Pod needs. Very low flow for a shower really hence why it needs to be so narrow 🍻🍻

@@DazzleKoi Thanks mate, I am thinking similar but would be pump into a spare pod and gravity back but only through a 2 tier (due to gravity) and thinking of 90cm wide. Not sure if I am wasting my time though as it might not be so effective (low flow and lacking height). I could go to 10K as buying a vari pump but then lose the effectiveness of the pod. At the other end of the pond I have a cetus sieve, nexus 210 and back through a veg trough. So looking to move some more water around as pond is 23ft long (3200 gallons).

Hi Mark, yeah its a tough one really. As you say , 2 tiers isn't going to be much use and the width just means its even less effective as wider effectively means less flow. Is there no way you can go to at least three tiers and reduce the width down?

The shower will be made for me locally so can be what I want, it's just he has a few made at 90cm wide he will do a deal on. The raising pod is a good option though so thanks for getting me thinking. Where did you buy your media from? and did you mention in a previous video a code to mention when purchasing?

Hi Mark, I used aquasource kano. I made a video on the best shower medias that's worth a look. I got s good deal on the kano for people who watched it but he sold out really quickly and I don't know if he has any more in yet. That video is worth a watch if you haven't seen it 👍👍

Hi mate, sorry for the delay in replying to you, I've been away on holiday. No I leave everything running all year round. If you turn it off you will kill off all the bacteria and have to start all over again in the Spring. No I don't cover either. In fact I do nothing different at all in winter other than reduce feeding when their appetites drop.

Hi mate, yes you can. You need to make sure you have the right flow through the Pod though, about 5500 litres an hour, and then you need to make sure its the correct sized shower for such a low flow 👍👍

Hi Jamie, it is literally a case of the bigger the gap you can create the better. In my case I would have liked higher but what I have is a minimum and it is working well. I have around 120mm but as I say, if you can get more then I would do it. I was restricted a bit with the height I could go. I will say though that 4 tiers with a smaller gap is better than 3 tiers with a bigger gap.

When your first set that sort of media running, do you add filter starter ? Thanks

Hi Jason, I ran a fine net under the return for a bit in case any debris came off (didn't get any) but other than that I didn't add anything. Its spring so feeding is low and I have mature filters running to so its not necessary really. I'm keen for anaerobic bacteria to form which handles nitrate so I don't think the gels and filter start product contain them anyway. I think the Pure+ gel is good if you need one but if you can just wait it out I believe that's a better option.

Hi Darren, how were the results of the shower in the end are you pleased with its ability to reduce nitrate? I've got a bit of a challenge as my tap water is reading 20ppm and the elephant ears bog isn't reducing nitrate. Great videos 👍

Hi mate, and thank you. Yes I'm really happy with it so far. Since I fired it up my nitrate has been zero. I must confess I cant remember what my tap water reads but I had it in my pond before and I haven't since the shower went on. Ive fed sometimes up to 10 or 12 times a day all through and I haven't seen any ammonia or nitrite either but and I know that volume of food is beyond the pod alone. So yes, delighted with it still, definitely recommend putting one on 👍👍🍻🍻👍👍

Hi mate, its Aquasource Kano. I have a video just about shower media and its in there. I had a deal negotiated with Aquasource with a code included in the video but its expired now. However, if you ring Aquasource and ask about the Dazzle Koi price they will do it for £69.95 a box plus £6.95 P&P which is still a great bargain.

Hi there, to be honest I usually just search the internet for the cheapest place but I always use pressure pipe. I've had stuff from Dankoi in the past with no issues. If its an unplanned job and I need something quickly I go to Tim Waddington at Quality Nishikigoi. To be fair Tim usually does me a price equivalent to the online prices but having it delivered is often easier than trying to transport long lengths myself and I'm also lazy 😁

Hi I wondered if can help. My pond is only 2ft deep I intended to rebuild to 4 ft. At present I’m running a eazy pod with moving bed. Is it worth adding a baking shower.? I’m covering the pond this winter with it being shallow so I’m hoping it’ll be ok till next year.

Hi mate, you dont say what volume it is but it depends really on a few things. You say you have a moving bed so it suggests the Pod cant cope on its own? If you need more bio filtration then a shower is definitely a good option to provide it. It sounds to me though that if you are going to make it bigger soon (say next spring/summer) you are probably going to then need a bigger filter. It may be a good idea to sell the Pod and moving bed and get a nexus as your mechanical filtration is going to struggle on the bigger pond. A shower is definitely an excellent option to compliment a good mechanical filter and it gives a lot of extra benefit such as the aeration, gassing off, nitrate removal etc

Hi Neil, I think you are fine at the moment then but I think if you make the pond bigger a shower would be a great addition. 2ft is a little shallow as koi benefit from the higher pressure of deeper water and also the temperature tends to stay a little warmer and not freeze. Going to 4ft will definitely benefit them 👍👍👍

Is that the only filter for the pond or is it only for addressing the nitrate level?

Hi Christian, I have an eazy pod and a tempest on this pond. The shower is additional filtration to provide all the benefits a shower gives. For me nitrate removal is one of the most important ones but a shower does a lot more besides. Why does the media need to be put in randomly? As opposed to stacked in uniform

Hi Roy, its broken up to increase the accessible surface area and you want it random to create chaotic , random water movement. If you don't, water will track, i.e. take the same route through the media all the time. It takes the path of least resistance. So you don't get all the media in contact with water. Its just all about maximising contact and surface area really

I have a similar size and set up with Eazy pod to you Darren, just a question what rate of flow are you throwing over the shower? As the pod can only handle 10000l per hour.

Hi mate, the optimum flow for the Pod is 5500 litres so this shower is designed for that. That is why it is 400mm wide, to scale for the low flow rate. For example, if the shower was 1000mm wide it would require a flow rate of around 15000 litres plus. In the earlier videos in the shower series I go through how to calculate your optimum shower size for your particular flow 👍👍👍

Hi David, yes definitely need the shower as well. They do two different jobs. The Tempest is mainly about mechanical filtration, taking out all the little fine bits floating around in the pond and making the water look clear. The shower is more about biological filtration, excellent ammonia/nitrite removal and has the added benefit of removing nitrate, which other filters can't, and adding a lot of aeration as well 👍👍

Can you mix bakki shower media ?? I have been given pumice stone , with the shower however I have purchased Infra red media , would using both be beneficial?? Thankyou

Hi John, yes you certainly can. The infra red media is much better so you want as much of that as possible but you can definitely make up the rest with pumice. I would recommend putting the infra red stuff in the top trays and the pumice at the bottom. this is because the pumice will block if you pump dirty water over it but the infra red stuff will consume some organic debris.

Hi mate, its spot on so far. I haven't touched it to be honest but I've not had nitrate or any bio issues. Its coped with everything I've thrown at it 👍

Wonder if I could ask a couple of questions please, recently built a new pond using a multi barrel system with the intention of completing the system with one of these towers, I built in a 4” below water return, plan is to pump all my water (7,000lph) to the top of the tower and gravity return to my pond, first question is, what size box do I need to accommodate that sort of flow and secondly on my system my last barrel is basically a collection chamber with no media in it, I currently have an air stone in the bottom to add aeration, should I keep this in place once the towers built or am I better off discarding it and allow the tower to add the aeration I need going back into the pond? I should add that all my filters and the tower will be housed in my garage with no aeration actually in the pond itself. Thanks Paul.

@@DazzleKoi hi mate, thanks for the reply, I do have a question for you, my filter system is an inline barrel setup, I have, vortex, two static bed up flow filters with hel-x media, a moving bed again with hel-x then a fifth drum that acts as a collection chamber, I run an air stone in the bottom of this one for added aeration, I then go 1.5” through my pump, branch off for UV and back to the pond via a single 4” return, this is reduced both ends using a 4-1.5” rubber boot as a temp setup, question is, I’m building a shower using the 600x400 boxes to take a flow of aprox 8,500ltrs, all housed in my garage, I just about have enough room to keep my existing setup and add the shower on the end, or I can loose the fifth drum and/or the moving bed, I’m guessing the moving bed will be virtually redundant as the shower will give me all the bio and aeration I need or am I better of keeping it in place? Plan is to build the shower complete and then on a given day, strip down my existing setup, install the shower, pipe work etc and get it straight back up and running. Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul, I would definitely keep the moving bed barrel. The last barrel that has nothing in it I would get rid of as its not really doing anything other than adding air but you have more than enough from the moving bed and the shower will also add loads. As long as you use a good ceramic media there is no issue if a bit of waste gets sent over the shower as it will deal with it 👍👍🍻🍻👍👍

Hi mate, I talk about flow in the first video in this series here kzread.info/dash/bejne/o32b1a-xoKnPh6w.html . Basically you want as much as possible, ideally 3000 gallons+ for a 1m shower. So if you cant flow that much you need to reduce the width of the shower down to match your flow.
