DIY Backyard Garden Pond
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video shows how i built a natural looking fish pond in my backyard for native fish. It has a DIY skimmer, biological filter and stream. The fish are Southern pygmy perch and Murray river rainbow fish. These fish are native to South-East Australia.
I was quoted between 10 and 16 thousand dollars. I couldn't afford that so i built it myself for just over $2000. This is Australian dollars, everything is a little more expensive here.

I think this is everything you need to build yourself a pond like this. Most of these links will be amazon links as a member of their affiliate program if you do make a purchase i will receive a commission. This costs you no extra. You can also just use the links to help see what the components look like or roughly how much they cost.
Geo textile underlayment- amzn.to/3jBoG1U (X2 if you want to sandwich the liner between to layers).
Firestone EPDM Rubber liner- amzn.to/3yQUrIR
Used Olive barrel for the Bog filter- mgplastics.com.au/plastic-bar... (this is an Australian company but you'll find these types of containers second hand anywhere in the world.)
Helpful video showing how the bog filter is constructed- • Cheap pond filter| Bog...
Uniseals to create watertight holes in the barrel. You need 2 one for the clean out and one for the overflow. - amzn.to/2WOtdp7
2" PVC pipe for overflow and clean out- amzn.to/2Vfhuzc
2" PVC Ball valve for clean out.- amzn.to/2Yo8sB9
2" PVC 90 degree elbow- amzn.to/3zJzS21 (attach to the overflow so water in directed down instead of jetting out into the stream. You might also like to get another to help lift water off the very bottom on the clean out pipe.)
PVC Glue- amzn.to/3Bz38Jt
Flexible 1 1/4" PVC pipe. - amzn.to/3mXPZFD ( To move water from the pump to the filter) 25ft should be enough but it will depend on where you position the skimmer in relation to the bog filter.
1 1/4" PVC 90 degree Elbow X 2- amzn.to/3jFpR0r To help connect pump to the flex pvc and filter barrel.
1 1/4" PVC pipe rigid- amzn.to/3teHDe6 (this is cut to the length required of the barrel. This is the pipe that runs from top to bottom inside the bog filter barrel)
1 1/4" PVC t piece fittings- amzn.to/2WOxeKd (To help disperse the water at the base of the filter.)
Bucket to create skimmer- amzn.to/3BI3bmp (Doest matter what type of bucket or container as long as it can fit the pump you choose)
Submersible pond pump Low volt DC- amzn.to/3yKtTbY (This is a different pump to what i used in this pond, however i used 4 of these pumps on my dream pond build and have been really happy) The transformers need to be kept indoors or protected from weather. They can easily be extended if need be. This video will help if you need to extend the low volt DC cable- • Plumbing bog filter| W... . If you wish to find another alternative anything that delivers around 1000- 1200 gallons per hour will work fine.
Matala filter mat- amzn.to/3mXVEeR (Cut to size to sit over the pump in the bucket)
Waterfall foam- amzn.to/3BBp46D (To seal cracks and crevices when creating the stream. Can also be used to seal gaps in the rocks used to create the skimmer)
Pond flocculent- amzn.to/2WOBSYF (To clear up muddy or cloudy water)
Beneficial bacteria- amzn.to/3mXXOet (Beneficial bacteria to kick start the ecosystem)
I think that's it for all the plumbing, pumps , underlayment and liner. Now you just need the rocks and gravel. I also have a downloadable pdf that includes the formulas I use when building an ecosystem pond- ozponds.com/pond-equipment/

Praise the LORD for creating water features!
I’ve done 2 ponds, one fairly large, so I know the time invested in creating a good design. You’ve done a bang up job with this one and that budget is quite impressive as well.

Thanks. I’m glad you want a pond 👍
We run a landscape company in the UK. Have watched loads of you tube videos lately including many from the us and all the aquascape guys. This pond of yours is our favourite of all by far. You've got it all spot on 👍. Were doing a larger pond in our garden (also on a budget). Its all very therapeutic isnt it. Regards. Tim

@@Ozponds I looked at Serpa design's channel and I can't remember the name of the other one, but theirs (while good-- I don't think I have the talent to do it, even after watching it), aren't as natural looking as yours. Do you make ponds for others? If not, you should look into a business of the sort.

Thank pierce. I don’t make ponds for a living. I thought I wanted to but the more I meet with people around my ponds the more I enjoyed talking to them about my DIY filters rather than selling the expensive equipment. So I started the channel so people not just wealthy people could build their own piece of pond paradise.

@@Ozponds That's good stuff, but there are those like myself who would not mind paying you to do the work, especially considering that the material won't cost as much with your methods. I can probably say I'd try it, but the likelihood of me achieving the result I'm looking for would be slim to none 😅

Nice pond, very natural looking. I'm in Adelaide and couldn't buy waterfall foam so used cement. Same sort of bio filter but I jet the water into a funnel to pick up oxygen to increase good bacteria before going down to the T piece which then goes to a bog then back to the pond via a waterfall. Careful with the scoria though, it can cut the liner, I used small river pebble. I'm on my 9th pond now, 40 years, but already designing the next one it's so addictive. Ponds on a budget are the most satisfying keep up the good work.

Thank you sir. I like your videos very much. You have great knowledge about ponds. Sir one question i have, beside gold fish, shubamkins and koi's ..which other fishes we can keep in outdoor ponds so that in winters also they can survive easily. I want to make a community fish pond, with different types of fish. But they can bare cold also around 8degree Celsius. Thank you very much.
@Ozponds

Those are the sorts of temperatures my ponds experience even slightly colder. I keep Southern Pygmy perch, Murray river rainbow fish, White Cloud Mountain minnows, silver perch and goldfish/ shubunkins all in outdoor ponds.

I’ve probably only watched every video 3 times 😂. I got to experience pondomonium online last year that was cool and they also provided online training that was awesome.
