DIY AQUAPONICS System for 10 Gallon Fish Tank - Part 1

Фильм және анимация

What's up everyone, in this video i build part 1 of an indoor DIY aquaponics system for my 10 gallon fish tank! I have been interested in aquaponics for a while now and know i wanted to build an indoor DIY aquaponics system early on when i saw the price of most retail aquaponics kits. This DIY aquaponics system was built using all materials found either on Amazon or at local hardware stores and came in under $50 total!
Items Used:
Clay Pebbles/ Hydroten: amzn.to/2rBeBcK
Submersible water pump: amzn.to/2Y1sRYr
30w grow light: amzn.to/2R393Cv
Rockwool starter cubes: amzn.to/2R38V5Z
PVC pipe cutters : amzn.to/37RXEvm
Window tray box grow bed: amzn.to/2QZj6si
Update to my DIY Aquaponics fish tank system:
• DIY AQUAPONICS Fish Ta...
My DIY aquaponics system will be fueled by a colony of guppies, which will hopefully feed some aquaponic lettuce and spinach to start.
I would love to get your feedback on this DIY aquaponics system, and take a look at other DIY aquaponic systems you may have produced or seen elsewhere. Make sure to subscribe for part 2 of the DIY aquaponics system build, and the grow log to track how well the aquaponics system grows plants!

Hi - I enjoyed that and have been thinking of having a go at it - I like the way you have it set up and nothing too complicated or expensive - I think I would try and make a centrifugal sediment trap directly from the pump with a drain tap - for removing solids and keeping grow medium clean - and incorporate that into it. Thanks for the upload...!

Hey man, so I love that you went DIY and built this beast. So I have a concern about your drainage system. While it's great that you have 2 drain outlets, there will ALWAYS be water in your system up to the level of your drain pipe. This is unwanted because you'll be forcing your plants to have their roots just sitting in the water. No good can come from this. You may want to consider getting bulkhead fittings from Home Depot for the grow bed, use a piece of pvc as a stand pipe and then use a larger diameter piece of pvc to cover your stand pipe, creating a bell syphon. The bell syphon would be your best bet because you can empty out almost ALL of your water out of the grow bed and it will ensure that oxygen is actually getting down to your roots. There are a TON of videos on here showing the concept of and construction of a bell syphon, so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to put together.

Hey matt, really appreciate this comment! So currently there’s only about 1/4th of an inch of overhang in the system- but I did experience some root rot on the first test run so I think I may want to go bell siphon next to really help with getting air down there. My main concern was with a 10 gal it’s going to take out quite a bit of water before it’s returned back to the tank.

I'm looking at doing this, I've seen some where the return pipes are higher into the flower tray to allow the water to fill and stay in the pay and as it over flows into the pipe it keeps the water moving, but only certain plants like to have their roots submerged. like lettuces etc.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJmHqpOcdMSWh84.html this link the guy has a aquaponic tank with the roots submerged. but i like the layout of yours better, i just think i may want the water level in the tray to be just under the clay media by about 2-3 inches so there's room for the root bulb and base of the plant to stay dry but the lower roots can submerge, and then i would just have the inlet be in one spot so it doesn't temp roots to fill it in clog up the system .
