DIY AQUAPONICS System for 10 Gallon Fish Tank - Part 1
Фильм және анимация
What's up everyone, in this video i build part 1 of an indoor DIY aquaponics system for my 10 gallon fish tank! I have been interested in aquaponics for a while now and know i wanted to build an indoor DIY aquaponics system early on when i saw the price of most retail aquaponics kits. This DIY aquaponics system was built using all materials found either on Amazon or at local hardware stores and came in under $50 total!
Items Used:
Clay Pebbles/ Hydroten: amzn.to/2rBeBcK
Submersible water pump: amzn.to/2Y1sRYr
30w grow light: amzn.to/2R393Cv
Rockwool starter cubes: amzn.to/2R38V5Z
PVC pipe cutters : amzn.to/37RXEvm
Window tray box grow bed: amzn.to/2QZj6si
Update to my DIY Aquaponics fish tank system:
• DIY AQUAPONICS Fish Ta...
My DIY aquaponics system will be fueled by a colony of guppies, which will hopefully feed some aquaponic lettuce and spinach to start.
I would love to get your feedback on this DIY aquaponics system, and take a look at other DIY aquaponic systems you may have produced or seen elsewhere. Make sure to subscribe for part 2 of the DIY aquaponics system build, and the grow log to track how well the aquaponics system grows plants!

Good job 👍🏾
Cool thanks!!
Wow nice
Hi - I enjoyed that and have been thinking of having a go at it - I like the way you have it set up and nothing too complicated or expensive - I think I would try and make a centrifugal sediment trap directly from the pump with a drain tap - for removing solids and keeping grow medium clean - and incorporate that into it. Thanks for the upload...!

Hey thanks a ton for this video. I have been looking all over the net for some kind of shelf or materials for a shelf for my set up. My big problem is that I can't find a window box big enough. My tank is 4 ft long. This is a great idea which gave me another good idea. One thing cool I have made is an auto water changer that works very easy.

Hey man, so I love that you went DIY and built this beast. So I have a concern about your drainage system. While it's great that you have 2 drain outlets, there will ALWAYS be water in your system up to the level of your drain pipe. This is unwanted because you'll be forcing your plants to have their roots just sitting in the water. No good can come from this. You may want to consider getting bulkhead fittings from Home Depot for the grow bed, use a piece of pvc as a stand pipe and then use a larger diameter piece of pvc to cover your stand pipe, creating a bell syphon. The bell syphon would be your best bet because you can empty out almost ALL of your water out of the grow bed and it will ensure that oxygen is actually getting down to your roots. There are a TON of videos on here showing the concept of and construction of a bell syphon, so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to put together.

Hey matt, really appreciate this comment! So currently there’s only about 1/4th of an inch of overhang in the system- but I did experience some root rot on the first test run so I think I may want to go bell siphon next to really help with getting air down there. My main concern was with a 10 gal it’s going to take out quite a bit of water before it’s returned back to the tank.
I just get a soap / sponge holder with 2 suction cups and add peace lily and pothos with their clean roots submerge in water. It only cost a few dollars.

Sure I can go into more detail. I do talk about them in the second part of the build series
I'm looking at doing this, I've seen some where the return pipes are higher into the flower tray to allow the water to fill and stay in the pay and as it over flows into the pipe it keeps the water moving, but only certain plants like to have their roots submerged. like lettuces etc.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJmHqpOcdMSWh84.html this link the guy has a aquaponic tank with the roots submerged. but i like the layout of yours better, i just think i may want the water level in the tray to be just under the clay media by about 2-3 inches so there's room for the root bulb and base of the plant to stay dry but the lower roots can submerge, and then i would just have the inlet be in one spot so it doesn't temp roots to fill it in clog up the system .

@@0110rroberts youre 100% right, only certain plants want their roots submerged like lettuce. those will have issues with rot etc

Thanks for sharing. I want to set up a system for my 90 gallon aquarium, and yours is the closest thing to what I was envisioning. Did everything work out like you had planned? Any surprises? Thanks.
@One_more_cast

no surprises for me. the system worked excellent for me :)
The growth of roots will block the pipe, and water will spill on floor
Will the PVC hold the weight of the grow media and water?
Hey! So we tried to recreate your vision and the only part we are having trouble with is keeping the tubing in place once the pump is on. Any suggestions?
@One_more_cast

so i drilled a hole and threaded mine through originally, but some good tape on the side of the planter box or taping the tube in place underneath could help out there! hope you like the system!

Does the pump constantly run water into the box? Do the roots constantly stay wet? Ty

100% silicone works well in fish tank applications
Hi, So when fish poop is pumped into the hydroton its in a Nitrite state. Typ. they use worms to break down fish poop from nitrite to nitrate so the plants can uptake the nutrients. How are you going to do that? Thanks; Hope this helps, And good luck. ps bigger is better in A.P.

Beneficial bacteria should take care of that conversion. There is bound to have some gunk in the reservoir, but its really easy to clean out. I just dump the clay into a 5 gal bucket filled with clean water and wash it out with a hose.
You look 95% exactly like my younger brother. You could play him in the movie.
Hello! I know it's been quite a while since you posted this but I was wondering if you have any updates? Does it work like you imagined? How long did it take for food to start growing? Did you have to make any changes to make it work better?

This is pretty cool. What kind of fish can you use
@One_more_cast

You can use most any fish that you can keep in a freshwater tank for aquaponics. I’ m using guppies here and a lot of people use goldfish and talapia!
@NehaSingh-gy1bh
3 жыл бұрын
@@One_more_cast how often do you clean the tank? Thanks for the awesome video!
Dumb doubt ... Won’t the guppy fry get sucked into the pump ? Do you cover it with something ? But then won’t that limit the filtering ability ?
i count 8 corner elbows
How do you filter the waste? Do you use a sump tank?
@One_more_cast

i did not, i would just wash the clay media when i replaced the lettuce
How many guppies are in the fish tank? Is it only guppies or are there other types like algae eaters? Awesome idea, going to build one myself.

I started with only 5 but they multiply quickly hah. I try to keep it under 15 to make sure they don’t overcrowd the tank. I do have one clown pleco as well but he doesn’t eat that much algae haha. Good luck with your build!
I'm a bit confused, do you need some sort of nutrient that people use for aquaponic or buble and fish is enough?

The link for the pump doesn't work, what pump should I use for 90 gallons

Hey sorry I’ll have to update it. The size of the pump would really depend on your grow bed and how fast you want water to flood it, not necessarily the tank size
