+BaconOnToast I could find use of this in several different applications on workspaces. Since the code is already existing, it is not really a hassle to set-up. Like he said, Animators, video Editors and even CAD users could find this useful. It takes some time to get used to, but it is not really a big deal. As he said, this is to increase efficiency and if you have a work where you don't need to increase efficiency, it is not needed. But if you have one, it is good. Because increasing Efficiency means less Stress at work place.

He should be using a for function with arrays
@mattcelder
5 жыл бұрын
@@jadedplover1851 with one off shit like this that he'll most likely write once and only change extremely rarely, it was probably faster to just copy and paste a billion elif statements than teach himself a more "correct" way to code in an insanely niche, buggy language. IMO the elif statements are totally fine here because they're ultra clear on their function so anyone can edit it with 0 knowledge of Lua and Taran can go back and quickly change individual buttons without having to relearn how the program works.
This is a crucial step in one of my "I'll do it one day projects" and I got pretty excited when I saw Tom Scott's video, but then when I realized he didn't provide any examples I figured I'd just get around to it later. I'm so happy I found this and sooooooo thankful to you for doing this. Seriously, thank you. :)

5:18 -- I think your flight simulator friends have the right idea -- if you're making a massive extension space for keys, that you only use infrequently, then they should be mounted vertically, so you you don't have to look far from the screen, and then just reach out and hit the key that you see.
@Klaevin
2 жыл бұрын
I thought it was for the "flight sim" feel, but you're right. that makes a ton of sense. if your monitor is already on top of something on your desk, then you should just fix a keyboard vertically to the book 9or whatever your monitor is on top of)
@nicolast.asolis196

Absolutely right! i have my keyboards angled under the monitors, but i use VR, the angle lets me look down my headset without having to take it off and i can look the key i want, a fixed position is essential to reduce the amount of time you take your view of the game

This is the first interesting and informative LTT vid in a while. Thanks Taran for giving us some new and useful content! Would love to see more stuff like this that goes beyond building machines with not one but TWO Titan Xs! The build videos are cool every now and again but most of us will never have a chance to emulate and learn from those kind of videos. Taran gave a project that I can and will try now, because it is something accessible to just about everyone, even if I have no use for 87 extra macro keys. I hope you guys keep doing accessible projects like these.
Nice! I was looking for a way to add macro for a streaming project. Thanks for the video :)

this is probably the best video I've seen here in a long long time. didn't even know that I want this and luckily I have an old board lying around. I'm a complete beginner at editing and learning the shortcuts is probably what has been holding me back most of the time, this gives me a lot of more options while the idea with taping the function to the key works great with my cheap keyboard (won't tape anything to my mech)
Amazing how much i like your videos even though they have nothing to do with anything id ever do

I really don't understand how there is no software out there to take care of this. install it, identify secondary keyboards and notepads, and create new keys. also, add a key to press and make a Wacom-like pop-up interface that shows you which key has every macro just like elgato desk does, but on the pc's screen. or just a software to allow you create a digital macro keyboard that pops up and you click the button with your mouse. haven't even been able to find a simple method of creating a new modifier key nor to add an existing one to one of the many buttons on my mouse. this seems to be the only option, which is a nightmare for someone who has no idea about programming and only wants some damn additional keys for his gaming and workflow.

Wow! An actually good video! Keep it up! More stuff like this
to remember hotkeys I find it very useful to use Anki, as spaced repetition program. I use it to fairly easy remember hundreds of (self-programmed) hotkeys. Also: I switched to using autohotkey hotstrings rather than creating more hotkeys. hotstrings take a microsecond or so longer to type, but you can type them without having to look away from the screen, which is very useful to not interrupt your workflow. Actually, I think hotstrings like "oas" (plus "tab" to trigger the hotstring) etc. are even easier/faster to type than hotkeys like "ctrl + x".

Finally... I have been looking for such a solution for years. Awesome. Even better: It is possible to dismantle old keyboards and Hook custom buttons to the Microcontroller. So... You can build a Keyboard with an entirely custom Layout. Combined With this method, the possibilities are endless.
@Mgis90
Жыл бұрын
yes, and you wouldn't even need to use Lua layer. You could make any next keyboard send a sequence of keys with a prefix, so that we could skip transferring data over a textfile. Ahk can catch and recognize the prefix and any code afterwards. Then I would be just careful for the target program to not get accidental inputs not meant yet for it. Also ahk supports vk codes and there's a lot of them.
Oh so this is how you can release so many videos so fast, you've hired a genius editor.

I don't know if Teran has ever done any youtube videos but he did a good job
The best video for me. I've been searching for a solution for a long time. Yeah I know there are ways to create a button box with a raspberry pi and a keyboard but its to complicated and i don't want to learn to program the raspberry pi. Thanks so much. Tell Linus for me that you should get an award for this video.
You're the editor?! Finally, I have some beef to pick with you!
