Idk what you're doing wrong, but, I've taken one to 400k that I sold running really well. I have one now with 157k and neither have had any engine problems at all. The only major repair on either has been a transmission failure in the first one. It was my girlfriend who later became wife's car and she never had the maintenance done, so no surprise. These little bastards just keep going and going. The first one went coast to coast 4 times and never left me stranded.

I have one with over 220k Miles and still going strong, still have working AC and heat, and it runs well. Maybe doesn't accelerate like she once did, but I mean I agree, they legitimately just keep going and going and going, these Civic's (my experience is 05) just don't have issues. I think honestly as long as you change that oil every 3-4k miles, she'll never fail ya.

One trick I learned long ago is to affix the thermostat in the housing with safety wire thru the hose connection. Once the housing is secured, un-tie the safety wire and remove. Also, mark the thermostat and the block with a black marker so the correct position is never a question. U may need to burp the system.

NO GAP!!! Good advice, but I couldn't see the bottom of housing so must have got thermo/gasket in squiwampus and had a drip, drip leak, aww crap! drained it again, took it apart and carefully checked that there was NO GAP!!! the second time and that everything fit tight. YAY!!! No leak!! Thanks for the video, it really helped. This is the first problem I have had in 271,000 miles, so don't really agree with 2002 1.7 not being a good engine...Knock on wood...Thanks again

Replaced radiator on my 05 civic lx due to a leak in it, did away with the old hoses and such but declined to replace the thermostat as it’s recently been replaced I found that the fans weren’t kicking on and bottom hose wasn’t getting hot even though the whole engine was overheating still and can’t seem to figure out why so I thought only thing it could be is the thermostat stuck closed, after replacing the thermostat and double checking for leaks she takes a bit more to overheat and the fans do kick on periodically but when it does overheat the bottom line is still not so hot or pressurized I’m wondering if there’s anything other than an air bubble I should be concerned of or if the old thermostat was even bad? Also had black soot in my coolant reservoir but asked my master tech what it could be and he said bad head gasket, I don’t know though because I check my oil and there was no presence of coolant and even my coolant wasn’t much of a different color especially not being brown and milky, I’m not in my forever car and may not even have it for longer than a year but any advice?

Did you ensure that all of the air was bled out of the cooling system? I would try and find a temperature gun and once the gauge shows its overheating, check the temp of the radiator and see if they match. Theres a small chance your head could possibly be warped from overheating and allowing air to get into the cooling system which would cause the gauge to spike when an air bubble is trapped in it. Ever had the system pressure tested? Or used one of those test strips to rule out a headgasket?

  • @z77deep75

Jennifer Jimenez, for future reference, get a funnel, fill the radiator to the top, squeeze the hoses to let some air out, then start the car and let it run until the fans cycle (turn on , run, turn off) twice. The process can take a couple of hours, so give yourself time. You can speed up the process by running the throttle at about 1500 rpms; don’t go higher or you risk overheating the engine. When it cycles it will suck coolant down into the radiator, so keep an eye on the funnel and keep it full enough not to suck air. It should be free of air by the second cycle. Also make sure the reservoir (white plastic bottle) is full to the MIN mark. Hope things have already worked out. Btw, the process I described can be used for almost any car.

Also i did the test pressurizing cylinders but no coolant came out from the radiator cap. But the issue is my engine is still get over heated. I really don't think i have a blown head gasket . Try taking the 2 prong plug that connects to the thermostat housing (this is the fan cycling pressure switch) and put a small jumper wire on the plug. That should immediately cycle on the radiator fans. If it doesn't then your little black fan relay cubes could be bad. They are located under the hood passenger side in a fuse box.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic EX that keeps heating up on me. Can someone help me diagnose what exactly is the issue? Ive noticed it tends to heat up when I am stuck in traffic in bumper to bumper traffic. I usually exit the freeway or pull over when in heavy traffic. I also noticed that it does not overheat when I am driving faster without traffic (60mph). Im not sure if its the radiator, thermostat, or the fan. Thanks.

Thanks. I will check the temperature sensor and see if the fan is working properly.

Dealing with the same issue on my '02 civic ex. It's the head gasket. These are notorious for that problem--and it won't show on your normal testiing methods, pressure test, etc... Incredibly frustrating, and certainly one of the reasons why the motors suck in civic version.... About to DIY swap on the HD.

@@SilverRodriguez If you are losing coolant out of hte coolant reservoir, then it is most likely the HG. I dealt with it for nearly two months, continually topping it off and trying to get answers from out side--I went to three mechanics (a Brakes plus chain, and two local guys) all of them did the same things, Pressure test, etc..,, all of them then refilled my radiator fluid and said, " you're overfilling it", and all stated they didn't think it was the head gasket. Finally, via honda forums and vids and my own diagnosis, I determined it was the hg.. I ended up, with the help of particular videos and same forums, replacing it myself. It was a chore, esp. as I have not done much mechanic work, with much start-stopping, I got it done and the problem is fixed. (!!) I'll post the main video I used as a guide below (additionally, I overspent on the gasket and tools, but was able to return items I didn't use--you may already have a good base set of tools, so can avoid my rookie mistakes--one of which breaking one of the valve cover bolts in the cyinder head requiring a visit to a machine shop and $40 to remove the broken bolt). Here's a link to the main video I referenced, but watched many prior to prepping getting all kind of angles and such. This one, though, was especially helpful, as it is replacing without doing the timing belt, raising the engine, etc.... (for which there are videos also to do the whole thing). I did overspend a bit but nowhere near as much as the $1500 to 2k HG replacement estimates I was getting from mechanics. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqFrmK2PeZvbirQ.html
