    For breeder purposes this is a really good option, but I don't recommend this for a long-term setu-up. Sharing water tends to stress out the fish, as they release pheremones in the water (so even if two males can't see each other, they know there's another male nearby). The other concern is that really often I see this as a way for people to collect as many bettas as possible and make as small of a compartment as possible, and this is problematic for obvious reasons. Please, if you are doing this as a long term set-up for your bettas, do a lot of extra water changes to keep those pheremone levels in the water down, and provide each long-finned male with at least 5 gallons and each short-finned male or any female with at least 10 gallons (take into account the height of the tank, a divided 20 long with two 10 gallon compartments won't give the fish as much horizontal swimming space as an individual 10 gallon would.)

    I have to agree with you. While this might be better than “jars” (OMG), the poor fish are still cramped. I have a 15G tank - divided in half - black divider with holes 1 Betta on each side and a couple of Cory’s on each side as well, plenty of plants, driftwood, and caves. My fish are very happy which is what it’s all about. Would I like more bettas? Absolutely! But my reality is I don’t have the space or time for more than 2 tanks - I have a 20G community tank as well. And again, it’s all about the fish - it’s not about me.

    @@deborahjeanne2141 I'm glad somebody agrees! When it comes to long-term homes (I personally believe in 5 gallons minimum per long-finned male, 10 minimum per short-finned male or female) this is obviously way too small, although considering Taylor has a lot of betta offspring I don't expect her to house each one in it's own individual 5-10 gallon tank; it's just not possible, considering how many offspring each fish has. I don't have any problems with this sort of set-up as a short-term grow-out tank, my real concern is with viewers seeing this and deciding to cram their tank full of as many bettas as possible. My other concern is with the possible stress of a divided tank. With proper water changes to keep the pheremone levels down it works, but I have a feeling a lot of people won't end up doing that and they'll just end up with a bunch of stressed out bettas in cramped compartments.

    In the wild Bettas can live in smaller areas during drought seasons but when the rainy season comes they get to move into large bodies of water. I’ve had them in both small spaces and other ones. However, the ones in larger tanks tended to thrive better. It would kinda be like a human living in a small bedroom that functions as living, sleeping, eating and bathroom all in one. I’m by far not a keyboard warrior or troll but I do think they would probably thrive in larger environments.

I use a paludarium internal filter for my betta divided tank believe it or not with a turnover rate of 80 gph. You can adjust the flow too. I like that when I adjust the flow to its lowest, the spray bar creates a trickling effect and there's a lot of surface agitation providing the bettas and live plants more oxygen.

    Yes, Cory does have a great system. What she has here is not a great system and is in no way comparable to what Cory has. Her system is no better than petco or petsmart. The poor betta on the opposite end of the filter and heater gets no benefit from either because of the dividers - even with holes. And the fish with the heater and filter is being overwhelmed with a too-strong water flow. She has too many dividers. I have a 15G with 1 divider, I just got a 20 long and 3 dividers. Each section in the 20G will have a small sponge filter, and each end will have a low wattage heater. 5 gallons is the minimum for a betta. 2G is not enough and she’s doing a disservice by promoting this. By the time you add substrate, it’s less than 2G per fish.

  • @cockatoode705

    @cockatoode705

    4 жыл бұрын

    4 years ago, 1 Gallon with a filter and heater was the minimum. The canister filter intake is by the last section so the water *has* to flow through every section, pulling the heat with it. A any other filter, and you’d be right. I keep my bettas in 5 gallon tanks but I don’t try to claim 2 gallons isn’t enough for a betta. I will add that that adding substrate to a five gallon will also reduce the size.

    You have to take more into account than tank size. Could the movement of tanks have caused stress initially? Were there tankmates? Was the tank open with few hiding spaces? Was the tank in a high-traffic area? Was the filter output too strong? Were there temperature fluctuations? In my experience, people who say their fish preferred a small tank just didn't set up the larger tank properly. Not saying you necessarily did, but it's very unlikely just having space to swim would cause bettas any stress. In the wild, they have miles and miles of water to swim, and they've got no problem doing that.

    If you have sand without subsand filter you have to break it down and wash it out sooner or later. I made my ow subsand filter because you can't back flush with the store bought ones. I use egg crate lighting plastic like you 40 gallon jar setup. I cut it to fit the tank bottom, then cut out little squares out of scrap for legs to hold the egg crate off the bottom. This leave a pretty wide open space under the substrate to create a flow. Normally you use an airstone in each riser to pull stuff down through the substrate to feed the bio, making it a huge bio filter. About once or twice a month you vaccume the gravel running it through a DIY 3" PVC pipe canister filter about 2ft long. Stuffed with pre-filter gause, next bio sponge filters, leaving space for more gause. A screw on cap for the intake with a bulkhead fitting on both ends for the hose to attach to. Now take out the airstones from both risers and put a powerhead on one of the risers, with a hose from the power head to the intake of the canister filter. And the return line to the other riset. So you have water pulled out from under the subsand filter at the first riser, and clean water pushed down the other riser, creating a current pushing dirt to the intake riser to be filtered. Let the fish poop fertilize the plants. Now you have a cleanable substrate giant bio filter. After you back flush for a few hrs, run the return line to a 5 gallon bucket or 2 for a water change. 2 buckets for a 20 gallon tank, 3 for a 30. Then use a Reverse Osmosis filter to return the water to the tank. You just did a 50% water change without throwing away any of your dirty water, turning it into super clean 7.0 PH neutral water without expensive chemicals.

    I like your method! I saw your comments a while back about it, too, but I think I haven't made it around to replying to a bunch of comments yet though. Have you seen the video from Aquarium Co-op about the Goliad farms tour in Texas? They re-use 100% of their water by filtering it through plants and then back into the system, it is a fascinating watch. They only need to replace water from evaporation! Re-using water is such a good goal, I would love to have a system in my future fish room where I do it via plants/aquaponics or an RO method like yours. I hate being so strapped for space in my little bathroom fish room :)

    @@SimplyBetta You have a lot of good ideas and very inventive. Plants are great if you have a lot of room. I am sure you can expand on my idea and make a system that will work for you to reuse water. On the 40 gallon full of jugs...I think you should cut the top off so you can get a ladle in it, and burn holes throughout the bottoms to let the poop out. If you have a scoop, you don't need to pull the jug out to catch the fish. Also put a drip system on them so stail water will always be leaving the jug for better circulation.

    I did this with a 20L as well but I wanted them to be isolated from each other (for qt purposes). I bought a sheet of cast acrylic (opaque black) and cut it into three pieces. Next I siliconed the dividers in, dividing the tank into 4 5ish gallon tanks. I put a 10 gallon heater at each end, undergravel filters in each section, and a large Java Fern on wood in each, as well. I have a betta in each section. They are thriving and loving life with their sassy little selves and I like it as well. The coolest thing is I only have to change water every 2-3 weeks, but I do it every week because I am already changing other overstocked tanks anyway.

    Great video, Taylor! I have the same dividers in my tanks and love them. However, I was hoping you could share: 1) has the canister filter worked for you? I've always assumed the outflow would be too strong for a Betta in the first compartment so I stuck with small sponge filters in each compartment instead, but would love to improve filtration with a canister or even an AquaClear HOB if functional. 2) how do you heat your divided tank? Placement and wattage of the heaters in your 20 gallons? Another reason I would like to try a canister filter is the possibility of using an inline heater. Lastly, 3) what kind of lids/tops do you use on your divided tanks to prevent your bettas from jumping out? Thank you!

Although it is so gentle after going through all the dividers that I have some biofilm developing on the top of the water in the compartments, so I'm also going to add a few small sponge filters. For heating, my fish room is heated so I don't really need to heat this particular tank. And for lids, I do DIY sliding lids that you can see in my past videos

It makes life living hell and I know a lot of people are worse off than me but it sure hampers me trying to do all my crafts and my fish. I was very successful raising Angels for 3 years and am now trying unsuccessfully to get just one spawn from one of my 2 males and my sorority of 6 ladies...agh 4 as 2 were MURDERED. I guess its the petsmart betas. Once it cools down here in AZ Ill order a nice pair from someone. I'm 74 and have wanted to try to breed Beta for years. But now I am realizing all them jars with only one working hand??? Have a blessed day and congratulations on the Baby. Hugs tobias/Ralph eloy az tobiascorneryahoo.com

    I have a question, I have a 20 gallon tall aquarium tank and want to get a second one for my male betta fish which I have 3 I want to put in a 20 gallon tall tank and I also have 4 female betta fish that I was trying to do a society but one or two of them are biting at each other’s fins so at the moment I only have 1 in the 20 gallon tall tank atm. But how many dividers can fit in a 20 gallon tall fish tank. I see videos on 20 gallon long but not 20 gallon tall. I’m sure I can fit two dividers in the current 20 gallon tall I have to place 3 of the four females if I was to do it that way but I am going to see if I can at least get two of them to get along after a week but idk. Kind of nervous since two of them have their fins bitten at by one of my other females, and then these two were chasing each other etc. I am still new to keep bettas long term and stuff so looking for advice and stuff. I have 5 tanks currently and I want to knock it down to 3. One for all my male bettas can be but divided, one where either all my female bettas get along and live openly in a 20 gallon tall tank or if absolutely needed a divided tank. My other tank is a 5 gallon with my other male betta with some tetras and a snail. Can you or anyone help me please?!?!?

  • @SimplyBetta

    @SimplyBetta

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi! SOrry your females aren't getting along, that happens a lot. Do you have plenty of cover in the tank? I would make it heavily planted, or maybe have a *lot* or decorations in there to break up lines of sight and give the females places to hide if they have to. If they're just too dang aggressive then separating them is a good idea. You can get dividers for 20g high tanks, lifewithpets makes them. 2 dividers can give you 3 nice big spaces for your males. Another 3 dividers in the other tank will give you 4 nice spaces too, they will be tall and narrow but it's a nice space, about 5g per female

    I highly suggest getting a sponge filter, and cycling it. Or getting a cycled one from a friend or local enthusiast. It is totally possible to keep a fish with no filter, but it is labor-intensive and risky. ALso having a little filter will keep the water moving slightly which is good for your heater ;)

    If your worried about flow use a sprayer bar. Personally I’d do that and put the intake in the middle of the tank. That way, clean water is going evenly through the tank, and one fish isn’t getting the ‘poopy’ end on the water current

  • @SimplyBetta

    @SimplyBetta

    5 жыл бұрын

    I did think about that! I think I would need to make my own sprayer bar then to make it 30" long and be able to control the outlet of each one. Another project to add to the list...

    Simply Betta atm you have all the flow going into one bettas space and any flow issues aren’t obvious. I would imagine that a standard flow bar would be fine. Another option, is to add another divider 1” from the wall of the tank, and have the return pipe go there. Then the flow would be broken up.

  • @SimplyBetta

    I like a subsand filter, always have, but now that I figured out a way toBacco Flush all that black stuff out that always collects under the subsand filter I love it even better. Eventually all that black stuff will come back up the air risers back into the tank, tainting the water. But not if you back flush. Then if you have a portable Reverse Osmosis filter, you can move that around to recycle dirty water for water changes. Portable, means a RO filter on a stand with wheels, and wired to plug in a wall socket.
