    I had a mythological campaign in-scale using DEI playing as Epirus. Commanding Pyrrhus, who in reality waged war against Rome and was related to Alexander through his mother's royal Epirote blood, I gave him victory, taking Rome and the peninsula as he wielded Alexander's sword as a household item. The best mod experiance for Rome II

    While I haven't played vanilla Rome II since this mod came out and I generally agree with what you said, I can't help but notice you have overlooked some stuff. The AI as you said is not able to use features that it was not designed to, so in fact it doesn't use the population system. That means you can never starve an enemy out of manpower. In turn if you ever raze or sack a settlement you are only hurting yourself in the long run. Since CA changed the agent skills DEI hasn't updated the unique skill tree they had for them so all the while you play you are choosing skills that don't correspond to the actions agents do and some are outright broken. We all know the AI handles it self poorly on the campaign map in vanilla so DEI implemented some major bonuses to it, but in the process made it imune to everything. There is no action one can take to make it suffer starvation or low public order and in turn create a rebelion, or even go bankrupt. You could wipe the floor with it and raid its lands and 4 turns later it is back with a full stack. Don't get me wrong - this is the best mod for Rome II. But a review should mention the bad with the good.

    IMO, DEI is the only thing that makes Rome II still playable for me after 5 years. I've played about 12 campaigns as Rome throughout the years, and each of them was different thanks to DEI and all of the overhauls that they've had. If this mod wasn't for free, I would pay the full game price to buy it. And as for difficulty, yes, it's harder than the standard game. But after all these years of playing vanilla, blitzing through half of the map in the first 10 turns, don't you want a fucking challenge?

    I’ve gotten pretty good at this game too and DEI was like playing for the first time again. I even tried some vs campaigns on dei but never got to complete them for different reasons. 1. Time commitment. 2. Opponent wasn’t that good or something and wasn’t buying the new mechanics. 3. Even with a good opponent we sometimes both would end up losing before even getting to each other. Best mod but I really want to play with another person.

    CA would consider this far too complex for the almost mythical 'wider audience' they've been trying to appeal to with recent games. I know the term 'dumbing down' is a bit trite at this point, but feature stripping and oversimplification is something we've definitely been seeing, and it's a damned shame because this mod is a perfect example of the kind of functional depth Total War games could (And arguably should) have.

  • @Afronautsays

    The shittiest part of it is that we all know that modders will eventually make their games more appropriate for the portion of the audience that desires this kind of thing, so they don't actually lose out on profit which is the only thing that would spark any kind of change.

    Coders don't make the gameplay. They build what they have been told. CA lacks proper historians and designers, as well as good managers. The ones who are responsible for the gameplay itself. What they don't lack is marketing department and people who buy their unfinished products.

    I love how complicated the mod sounds but how simple it plays xD I also found really cool both you and I found ourselves stuck in Illyria. The Illyrian War in my case was a devastating one for all of the GrecoMacedonian region. Both my Romans and the "Close-East Block" had to fight constantly till the point my 2 Legions stood strong enough to make enemy armies not only weak but poor in quality. The slow expansion to the east was possible thanks to the constant sacrifice of 3 Legions in the end. The 2 main Legions (The Liberatrix and The Dominatrix) had to help each other but when the third one came in, it was basically over for the Block, as this Legion, the Illryan, was founded on the east but replenished in Italia, meaning that my Principes were more than ready to finally put an end to Illyria while the Dominatrix could finally rest and be reinforced. When peace was achieved, i droped myself over Macedonia and left Athens and Sparta alive. I eventually moved to the north against the Dacians and Thracians, but this war was not as hard as the first one. Later on, the presure in the West was stablished by Massalia and Carthage, who were in a Cold War. I helped several Barbarian Tribes to weaken both sides, but Massalia was unstoppable. That was my call. Carthage saw the move and fought on both Shores and Land. The War Was Over shortly after. My expassionism caused quite good damage to this 2 Legions fighting on the Gaul (note these are not the same 2 Legions from the East, it saddens me not to remember the name of them. The Gauls saw the new Threat, Rome, so they summoned a few more Tribes to attack, but my West Legions fought them back, and took more land till peace was stablished. Carthage on the other hand, took some territory i wanted, plus, they didn't see me with good eyes on Iberia, where a Third West Legion was starting to fight. The Carthago-Roman War was simply terrible. 2 West Legions were stranded in Iberia. 1 in the Gaul because of the preassure of the Navy and the Gauls. 2 more Legions (The South Legions) forged in Rome started their campaign in Sicily to secure more income and closeness to Carthage. However, food and gold were running extremely short, leaving the war at a stalemate status. Yet Carthage had the Naval Advantage. For years, Carthage kept on damaging the settlements and even reaching Italy with a few secured positions, but one final card was used. The Greeks. Athens, which was helping somehow, finally got it's fleet close to Carthage, where my weak fleet fought closely to the Athenian, finally securing a path for my South Legions to reach Africa. Carthage fell, but the Nubians kept helping Carthage, and the union of this force proved brutal against me. Eventually, a third Legion, the savior of this war, reached Africa and fought Carthage back enough to reinforce the other 2. The War was over, but after all this years, a massive threat, worst than all others combined emerged. "Persia". I don't specifically remember the name, it was something like Atrakopactan or something. The problem here was that, during the war with Carthage, a super power rose in the East, the Bosporean Kingdom, which was ready to expand to my Thracian regions. Back in those days, a rebelous city decided to start it'own faction, and called itself the "Cimmerian Kingdom". I helped themto fight the Bosporeans from within as the Bosporeans had an never ending wave of low quality armies which proved uncapable of defending the Pontic Region (Pontus). As i stablished there, the Bosporeans attacked till they had nothing more to offer. As i conquered their main city, the Cimmerians conquered what was left. For a short period of time, the Cimmerians were strong, but as the Persians moved in, the dream was over. The Cimmerians asked for help, so the war was on. Most of the world was against the "Persians" but the numbers where a problem... and even worst, they had an "Indu" ally which sent hundreds of units to weaken me. The War was long... but worth it.

    A lot of these features are just changing Rome 2 into Rome 1. So there is literally no excuse for SEGA and Total War to not already have these implemented. The game is meant to be a successor to the original game but actually omitted several features that made the original great.

    Love this mod, have been using and following it since it's first public beta. Some corrections to this video. AI won't starve and get much rebellions because DeI gives them so much buffs. Sadly it's necessary for this bare bones of AI. Like you can raid them with 4 full armies and they still keep positive in their cities. Also population and supply routes have (had?) no effect for the AI, or atleast it wasn't when last time i played

    The best way to play DeI is competing against another player where you can take advantage of supply lines. It's actually really devastating when 6 stacks of armies are in a single province. My buddy had to retreat and halt his invasion because his 6-stack army is suffering from attrition without supply.

    I don't know if you've played vanilla recently but the Campaign AI has changed wherein they will spawn full stack armies in most of their settlements - or at least within their provinces. The map is not as empty as it was a couple of months before. All of this without the mod. It seems it is now coded within the update itself (ancestral)... at least in the mid and late game.

    Is there a mod that makes the time per turn more realistic? Each turn is a season, three months. This ends up causing problems and creating ridiculously long travel times. One problem is that the generals age too quickly, so it's hard to build up faction members before they die. Regarding traveling - Let's say you want to sail from Rome to Egypt. How long in the game does that take? At standard speed, what, around two years? At forced speed, somewhat less, but still a completely unrealistic amount of time. That's without going into marching times. Say Rome to Sicily for example. Hopelessly longer than real travel times in the age. Though Napoleon Total War is generally seen as inferior, one thing they did a little better was game time per turn. Yes, that could make Rome 2 a VERY long game. You'll get no complaints from me if it were.

    No problemo. When you get to those bigger TPY submods the movement starts getting a little wonky because they don't just cut it by whatever factor TPY you have it. So your mileage may vary for "realism" of troop and ship movements. If you get a wee bit more hands on, you can tweak the movement rates yourself and it's a pretty simple thing to do with the pack manager.

  • @ashleyhyatt6319

    @ashleyhyatt6319

    I just want travel time to be as realistic as possible. There is plenty of information about actual time required in historical sources. How did the devs not realise how silly such enormous periods of time required between travel points severely detracted from gameplay and immersion? If they felt that it would make the game too long then they underestimated a fans willingness to live in the game. All they had to do was consider actual historical travel times along a certain level of road or using a certain ship between two major points and make that the default single turn unit (eg Rome to Naples at a rate of one week by road, or perhaps allow for a surplus of movement points with a rate two weeks per turn). Adjustments are calculated for road quality, terrain, ship speed, weather conditions, etc. I'm not smart enough to make such a mod, but even a dummy like me can see the need.

    I just don't understand the supply system in DeI. One big submenu per army, where the supply situation is listed would be ideal, instead it's scattered over several tiny icons. Makes it hard to understand and not very user friendly. This is not a knock on the modders, I think they had to wotk around the hardcoded limitations. It's the main issue I have with DeI. Ancient Empires for ATW feels a little more user friendly to me.

  • @Colest503

    @Colest503

    5 жыл бұрын

    I haven't played much AE but my understanding is the supply system is different in it. AE treats the supply system like the ships in DEI to my understanding. Armies have a supply amount they stock up on that when out of a friendly region gets used up and when its empty attrition sets in. It's binary, either consuming supplies at a static rate or not. DEI has different supply situations that determine consumption rate based on location of your provinces/supply lines, location of allied provinces, location of enemy armies, season, fertility, army stance, and culture type. Whether it could be streamlined in easier to notice menus, I don't know, but AE and DEI supply systems are vastly different to my knowledge so it's apples to oranges comparison.

    Divide et Impera needs to fix the Greek names: For instance this "Thraikoi" thing (other mods have used it aswell) does not exist. It's ὁ Θρᾷξ singular οἱ Θρᾷκες plural. Also stuff like Athenai Hoplitai is again wrong, Athenaioi Hoplitai is the correct term. Cavarly and Sarissaphoroi is wrong: According to the taxonomy of the Tactical Writers, all the cavalry which fought at close quarters was called the doratophoroi ‘spearbearing’ or xystophoroi ‘lance-bearing’ cavalry (Asclep. 1. 3) Epirotoi or Epivatoi does not exist either, both of these words are 1st declination, not 2nd Also some historical inaccuracies: Leukaspides as melee infantry? They were a phalanx corps, the silver-shields were reformed P.S. Concentrate fire exists in vanilla, it is hidden in the game files, it's not a new addition

    Sounds very interesting but it features a typical mistake when modding: enormous complexity on mechanics need enormous UI improvement so that those tones of new information don't ruin your experience. Grand strategy games generally demand a lot of good administration of your limited resources, and that's great, the problem is that you cannot do that propperly if you have no access to clear and quick to check information.. For example, if I play Stellaris and run low on energy, I can instantly check my expenses and try to mend the situation. I've tried DEI and echonomy felt like playing on a roulette. Similar happened with the exquisite ancient empires for tottal war: Attila. I love complex mechanics but games are games, and the variables should be easy to understand, check and to a certain extent, predict. That's why I like playing stellaris a lot more than playing Europa universalis (both from the same studio), because in EU some mechanics are hard to understand or there isn't information about it. I've played dozens of mods, specially on total war series (CA makes quite poorly finished games that are much better with mods) and I'd really recomend modders that plan to make complex overhauls with new mechanics to expend much more energy on adapting the UI to perfectly match the new features.

    My main problem with this mod is that it absolutely sucks at giving you the relevant information, while at the same time overloading you with information. It is ridiculous when there are several tooltips in the mod that literally do not fit on the screen because they are so god damn bloated with tiny modifiers and other needlessly convoluted shit. I love the ideas of this mod but I just cannot get around the implementation. Also having the names of units be in latin or greek etc does nothing but drastically increase the learning curve further than it already is. There is no need to have the classes be Patricii, Plebes, Proletarii, and Peregrinni, when instead it could just have been something significantly more understandable such as Nobles, Citizens, Working Class, Foreigners, which is pretty close to what those latin words translate to, but significantly easier to understand what they are and what their role is. The same goes for the units.

    I'd assume that alot of this is limited by the base UI of the game...

    The "needless modifiers" in the tooltips you refer to are largely the supply system and the seasons. You'd have to gut either system to get the UI clean.

    The english name is under the unit name in the info panel, so I think that's a good compromise between the two, but I understand where you're coming from.

    Hiero protoganist the creator made some submods so the battles can be faster. It takes so long because the formations are actually carefully fighting each other and being protected by their comrades.

    I’ve only watched a few of your videos, but I find your style of presentation for your opinions very well balanced and thought out. I normally shy away from overhaul mods like DEI but on your recommendation I am definitely give it a go. I’ll also be watching your vs campaigns in the future. Great video 👍🏻

    This is really cool, the idea that you can recruit the sort of military individuals from the place you have just taken over is superb - because thats exactly what alexander did during his campaign into Asia, he paired his Marcedon forces with his conquered asian forced and went forward etc.
